Layered evaluation of multi-criteria collaborative filtering for scientific paper recommendation
Recommendation algorithms have been researched extensively to help people deal with abundance of information. In recent years, the incorporation of multiple relevance criteria has attracted increased interest. Such multi-criteria recommendation approaches are researched as a paradigm for building intelligent systems that can be tailored to multiple interest indicators of end-users – such as combinations of implicit and explicit interest indicators in the form of ratings or ratings on multiple relevance dimensions. Nevertheless, evaluation of these recommendation techniques in the context of real-life applications still remains rather limited. Previous studies dealing with the evaluation of recommender systems have outlined that the performance of such algorithms is often dependent on the dataset – and indicate the importance of carrying out careful testing and parameterization. Especially when looking at large scale datasets, it becomes very difficult to deploy evaluation methods that may help in assessing the effect that different system components have to the overall design. In this paper, we study how layered evaluation can be applied for the case of a multi-criteria recommendation service that we plan to deploy for paper recommendation using the Mendeley dataset. The paper introduces layered evaluation and suggests two experiments that may help assess the components of the envisaged system separately. Evaluating Recommender Systems for Technology Enhanced Learning: A Quantitative Survey
The increasing number of publications on recommender systems for Technology Enhanced Learning (TEL) evidence a growing interest in their development and deployment. In order to support learning, recommender systems for TEL need to consider specific requirements, which differ from the requirements for recommender systems in other domains like e-commerce. Consequently, these particular requirements motivate the incorporation of specific goals and methods in the evaluation process for TEL recommender systems. In this article, the diverse evaluation methods that have been applied to evaluate TEL recommender systems are investigated. A total of 235 articles are selected from major conferences, workshops, journals, and books where relevant work have been published between 2000 and 2014. These articles are quantitatively analysed and classified according to the following criteria: type of evaluation methodology, subject of evaluation, and effects measured by the evaluation. Results from the survey suggest that there is a growing awareness in the research community of the necessity for more elaborate evaluations. At the same time, there is still substantial potential for further improvements. This survey highlights trends and discusses strengths and shortcomings of the evaluation of TEL recommender systems thus far, thereby aiming to stimulate researchers to contemplate novel evaluation approaches.Laboratorio de Investigación y Formación en Informática Avanzad

Defining architectures for recommended systems for medical treatment. A Systematic Literature Review
This paper presents a Systematic Literature Review(SLR) related to recommender system for medical treatment, aswell as analyze main elements that may provide flexible, accurate,and comprehensive recommendations. To do so, a SLR researchmethodology obey. As a result, 12 intelligent recommendersystems related to prescribing medication were classed dependingto specific criteria. We assessed and analyze these medicinerecommender systems and enumerate the challenges. After studyingselected papers, our study concentrated on two researchquestions concerning the availability of medicine recommendersystems for physicians and the features these systems should have.Further research is encouraged in order to build an intelligentrecommender system based on the features analyzed in this work

Improving tag recommendation using social networks
In this paper we address the task of recommending additional tags to partially annotated media objects, in our case images. We propose an extendable framework that can recommend tags using a combination of different personalised and collective contexts. We combine information from four contexts: (1) all the photos in the system, (2) a user's own photos, (3) the photos of a user's social contacts, and (4) the photos posted in the groups of which a user is a member. Variants of methods (1) and (2) have been proposed in previous work, but the use of (3) and (4) is novel.
For each of the contexts we use the same probabilistic model and Borda Count based aggregation approach to generate recommendations from different contexts into a unified ranking of recommended tags. We evaluate our system using a large set of real-world data from Flickr. We show that by using personalised contexts we can significantly improve tag recommendation compared to using collective knowledge alone. We also analyse our experimental results to explore the capabilities of our system with respect to a user's social behaviour

The presentation starts with a description of the current situation where almost none educational data sets are publicly available. This is a strange situation as plenty of data is saved on a daily base in LMS like Moodle, Blackboard. In other domains like e-commerce it is a common practice to use publicly available data sets from different application environments (e.g. Yahoo, MovieLens) in order to evaluate algorithms and create new data products. These data sets are for instance used as benchmarks to develop new recommendation algorithms and compare them to other algorithms in certain settings.
Recommender systems are also increasingly applied in Technology Enhanced Learning field but it is still an application area that lacks such publicly available data sets. Although there is a lot of research conducted on recommender systems in TEL, they lack data sets that would allow the experimental evaluation of the performance of different recommendation algorithms using comparable, interoperable, and reusable data sets. This leads to awkward experimentation and testing such as using data sets from movies in order to evaluate educational recommendation algorithms.Stella
Towards Integration of Artificial Intelligence into Medical Devices as a Real-Time Recommender System for Personalised Healthcare:State-of-the-Art and Future Prospects
In the era of big data, artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms have the potential to revolutionize healthcare by improving patient outcomes and reducing healthcare costs. AI algorithms have frequently been used in health care for predictive modelling, image analysis and drug discovery. Moreover, as a recommender system, these algorithms have shown promising impacts on personalized healthcare provision. A recommender system learns the behaviour of the user and predicts their current preferences (recommends) based on their previous preferences. Implementing AI as a recommender system improves this prediction accuracy and solves cold start and data sparsity problems. However, most of the methods and algorithms are tested in a simulated setting which cannot recapitulate the influencing factors of the real world. This review article systematically reviews prevailing methodologies in recommender systems and discusses the AI algorithms as recommender systems specifically in the field of healthcare. It also provides discussion around the most cutting-edge academic and practical contributions present in the literature, identifies performance evaluation matrices, challenges in the implementation of AI as a recommender system, and acceptance of AI-based recommender systems by clinicians. Towards a Cloud-Based Service for Maintaining and Analyzing Data About Scientific Events
We propose the new cloud-based service OpenResearch for managing and
analyzing data about scientific events such as conferences and workshops in a
persistent and reliable way. This includes data about scientific articles,
participants, acceptance rates, submission numbers, impact values as well as
organizational details such as program committees, chairs, fees and sponsors.
OpenResearch is a centralized repository for scientific events and supports
researchers in collecting, organizing, sharing and disseminating information
about scientific events in a structured way. An additional feature currently
under development is the possibility to archive web pages along with the
extracted semantic data in order to lift the burden of maintaining new and old
conference web sites from public research institutions. However, the main
advantage is that this cloud-based repository enables a comprehensive analysis
of conference data. Based on extracted semantic data, it is possible to
determine quality estimations, scientific communities, research trends as well
the development of acceptance rates, fees, and number of participants in a
continuous way complemented by projections into the future. Furthermore, data
about research articles can be systematically explored using a content-based
analysis as well as citation linkage. All data maintained in this
crowd-sourcing platform is made freely available through an open SPARQL
endpoint, which allows for analytical queries in a flexible and user-defined

Deep matrix factorization approach for collaborative filtering recommender systems
Providing useful information to the users by recommending highly demanded products and services is a fundamental part of the business of many top tier companies. Recommender Systems make use of many sources of information to provide users with accurate predictions and novel recommendations of items. Here we propose, DeepMF, a novel collaborative filtering method that combines the Deep Learning paradigm with Matrix Factorization (MF) to improve the quality of both predictions and recommendations made to the user. Specifically, DeepMF performs successive refinements of a MF model with a layered architecture that uses the acquired knowledge in a layer as input for subsequent layers.
