Logic Programming for Finding Models in the Logics of Knowledge and its Applications: A Case Study
The logics of knowledge are modal logics that have been shown to be effective
in representing and reasoning about knowledge in multi-agent domains.
Relatively few computational frameworks for dealing with computation of models
and useful transformations in logics of knowledge (e.g., to support multi-agent
planning with knowledge actions and degrees of visibility) have been proposed.
This paper explores the use of logic programming (LP) to encode interesting
forms of logics of knowledge and compute Kripke models. The LP modeling is
expanded with useful operators on Kripke structures, to support multi-agent
planning in the presence of both world-altering and knowledge actions. This
results in the first ever implementation of a planner for this type of complex

Ultimate approximations in nonmonotonic knowledge representation systems
We study fixpoints of operators on lattices. To this end we introduce the
notion of an approximation of an operator. We order approximations by means of
a precision ordering. We show that each lattice operator O has a unique most
precise or ultimate approximation. We demonstrate that fixpoints of this
ultimate approximation provide useful insights into fixpoints of the operator
O.
We apply our theory to logic programming and introduce the ultimate
Kripke-Kleene, well-founded and stable semantics. We show that the ultimate
Kripke-Kleene and well-founded semantics are more precise then their standard
counterparts We argue that ultimate semantics for logic programming have
attractive epistemological properties and that, while in general they are
computationally more complex than the standard semantics, for many classes of

Modal logics are coalgebraic
Applications of modal logics are abundant in computer science, and a large number of structurally different modal logics have been successfully employed in a diverse spectrum of application contexts. Coalgebraic semantics, on the other hand, provides a uniform and encompassing view on the large variety of specific logics used in particular domains. The coalgebraic approach is generic and compositional: tools and techniques simultaneously apply to a large class of application areas and can moreover be combined in a modular way. In particular, this facilitates a pick-and-choose approach to domain specific formalisms, applicable across the entire scope of application areas, leading to generic software tools that are easier to design, to implement, and to maintain. This paper substantiates the authors' firm belief that the systematic exploitation of the coalgebraic nature of modal logic will not only have impact on the field of modal logic itself but also lead to significant progress in a number of areas within computer science, such as knowledge representation and concurrency/mobility
Named Models in Coalgebraic Hybrid Logic
Hybrid logic extends modal logic with support for reasoning about individual
states, designated by so-called nominals. We study hybrid logic in the broad
context of coalgebraic semantics, where Kripke frames are replaced with
coalgebras for a given functor, thus covering a wide range of reasoning
principles including, e.g., probabilistic, graded, default, or coalitional
operators. Specifically, we establish generic criteria for a given coalgebraic
hybrid logic to admit named canonical models, with ensuing completeness proofs
for pure extensions on the one hand, and for an extended hybrid language with
local binding on the other. We instantiate our framework with a number of

Implementing Default and Autoepistemic Logics via the Logic of GK
The logic of knowledge and justified assumptions, also known as logic of
grounded knowledge (GK), was proposed by Lin and Shoham as a general logic for
nonmonotonic reasoning. To date, it has been used to embed in it default logic
(propositional case), autoepistemic logic, Turner's logic of universal
causation, and general logic programming under stable model semantics. Besides
showing the generality of GK as a logic for nonmonotonic reasoning, these
embeddings shed light on the relationships among these other logics. In this
paper, for the first time, we show how the logic of GK can be embedded into
disjunctive logic programming in a polynomial but non-modular translation with
new variables. The result can then be used to compute the extension/expansion
semantics of default logic, autoepistemic logic and Turner's logic of universal
