    Knowledge representation and integration for portfolio evaluation using linear belief functions

    In this paper, we propose a linear belief function approach to evaluating portfolio performance. By drawing on the notion of linear belief functions, we propose an elementary approach to knowledge representation for expert systems using linear belief functions. We show how to use basic matrices to represent market information and financial knowledge, including complete ignorance, statistical observations, subjective speculations, distributional assumptions, linear relations, and empirical asset pricing models. We then appeal to Dempster’s rule of combination to integrate the knowledge for assessing the overall belief of portfolio performance, and updating the belief by incorporating additional information. We use an example of three gold stocks to illustrate the approach

    An overview of economic applications of David Schmeidler`s models of decision making under uncertainty

    This paper surveys some economic applications of the decision theoretic framework pioneered by David Schmeidler to model effects of ambiguity. We have organized the discussion principally around three themes: financial markets, contractual arrangements and game theory. The first section discusses papers that have contributed to a better understanding of financial market outcomes based on ambiguity aversion. The second section focusses on contractual arrangements and is divided into two sub-sections. The first sub-section reports research on optimal risk sharing arrangements, while in the second sub-section, discusses research on incentive contracts. The third section concentrates on strategic interaction and reviews several papers that have extended different game theoretic solution concepts to settings with ambiguity averse players. A final section deals with several contributions which while not dealing with ambiguity per se, are linked at a formal level, in terms of the pure mathematical structures involved, with Schmeidler`s models of decision making under ambiguity.     We examine the impact of ambiguity on economic behaviour. We present a relatively non-technical account of ambiguity and show how it may be applied in economics. Optimistic and pessimistic responses to ambiguity are formally modelled. We show that pessimism has the effect of increasing (decreasing) equilibrium prices under Cournot (Bertrand) competition. We also examine the effects of ambiguity on peace processes. It is shown that ambiguity can act to select equilibria in coordination games with multiple equilibria. Some comparative statics results are derived for the impact of ambiguity in games with strategic complements.

    Massively Parallel Computation Using Graphics Processors with Application to Optimal Experimentation in Dynamic Control

    The rapid increase in the performance of graphics hardware, coupled with recent improvements in its programmability has lead to its adoption in many non-graphics applications, including wide variety of scientific computing fields. At the same time, a number of important dynamic optimal policy problems in economics are athirst of computing power to help overcome dual curses of complexity and dimensionality. We investigate if computational economics may benefit from new tools on a case study of imperfect information dynamic programming problem with learning and experimentation trade-off that is, a choice between controlling the policy target and learning system parameters. Specifically, we use a model of active learning and control of linear autoregression with unknown slope that appeared in a variety of macroeconomic policy and other contexts. The endogeneity of posterior beliefs makes the problem difficult in that the value function need not be convex and policy function need not be continuous. This complication makes the problem a suitable target for massively-parallel computation using graphics processors. Our findings are cautiously optimistic in that new tools let us easily achieve a factor of 15 performance gain relative to an implementation targeting single-core processors and thus establish a better reference point on the computational speed vs. coding complexity trade-off frontier. While further gains and wider applicability may lie behind steep learning barrier, we argue that the future of many computations belong to parallel algorithms anyway.Graphics Processing Units, CUDA programming, Dynamic programming, Learning, Experimentation

    Connecting electronic portfolios and learner models

    Using electronic portfolios (e-portfolios) to assist learning is an important component of future educational models. A portfolio is a purposeful collection of student work that exhibits the student's efforts, progress and achievements in one or more areas. An e-portfolio contains a variety of information about a person's learning outcomes, such as artifacts, assertions from others, self-reflective information and presentation for different purposes. E-portfolios become sources of evidence for claims about prior conceptual knowledge or skills. This thesis investigates using the information contained in e-portfolios to initialize the learner model for an intelligent tutoring system. We examine the information model from the e-portfolio standardized specification and present a method that may assist users in initializing learner models using e-portfolios as evidence for claims about prior conceptual knowledge or skills. We developed the EP-LM system for testing how accurately a learner model can be built and how beneficial this approach can be for reflective and personalized learning. Experimental results are presented aiming at testing whether accurate learner models can be created through this approach and whether learners can gain benefits in reflective and personalized learning. Monitoring this process can also help ITS developers and experts identify how an initial learner model can automatically arise from an e-portfolio. Additionally, a well-structured learner model, generated by an intelligent tutoring system also can be attached to an e-portfolio for further use by the owner and others
