KOMBASE - a knowledge representation system with frames for an object-oriented knowledge base
Knowledge representation is an important area of research which is currently being done in the field of Artificial Intelligence (AI). In order to manipulate the wealth of information available in a typical AI application, mechanisms must be provided to represent and to reason with knowledge at a high level of abstraction. Knowledge representation with frames is a structured and object-oriented approach to this problem. KOMBASE is a prototype to a frame-based system containing organizational information of companies and other corporate bodies. This paper describes the approach adopted in the development of KOMBASE and discusses its implementation, particularly from a knowledge representational perspective

A Semantic Network for Modeling Biological Knowledge in Multiple Databases
We have developed a semantic network of biological terminology to aid in the retrieval and integration of biological information from a variety of disparate information sources. Our semantic network strives to provide a categorization of biological concepts and relationships among these concepts. The semantic network will impart a knowledge structure through which computers can reason and draw conclusions about biological data objects and will provide a federated view of the many disparate databases of interest to biologists. In the development of our system, we have included the concepts from several established controlled vocabularies, chief among them being the National Library of Medicine\u27s Unified Medical language System (UMLS). While the UMLS Metathesaurus provides an excellent controlled vocabulary, we have found their semantic network lacking in sufficient detail to be useful as a tool for categorization of biological concepts in databases. We would like to provide a categorization of concepts that provides finer detail than their semantic network without the considerable size and complexity of their Metathesaurus. Our complete semantic network consists of 183 semantic types and 69 relationships
Chemists’ knowledge object. Formulation, modification and abandonment of iconic model
This article presents an analysis of different perspectives in regards to chemistry scientific statute. The category of scientific model was considered to characterize the proposal and development of technological-iconic model. It was necessary to have a look at the time in which the introduction of analogical and symbolic models was indispensable to modify the initial model. It also established the way in which the technological-iconic model can be a didactic foundation to lead secondary students towards Chemistry as one of the natural sciences
