Smart Topic Miner: Supporting Springer Nature Editors with Semantic Web Technologies
Academic publishers, such as Springer Nature, annotate scholarly products with the appropriate research topics and keywords to facilitate the marketing process and to support (digital) libraries and academic search engines. This critical process is usually handled manually by experienced editors, leading to high costs and slow throughput. In this demo paper, we present Smart Topic Miner (STM), a semantic application designed to support the Springer Nature Computer Science editorial team in classifying scholarly publications. STM analyses conference proceedings and annotates them with a set of topics drawn from a large automatically generated ontology of research areas and a set of tags from Springer Nature Classification
Analyzing the Impact of Visitors on Page Views with Google Analytics
This paper develops a flexible methodology to analyze the effectiveness of
different variables on various dependent variables which all are times series
and especially shows how to use a time series regression on one of the most
important and primary index (page views per visit) on Google analytic and in
conjunction it shows how to use the most suitable data to gain a more accurate
result. Search engine visitors have a variety of impact on page views which
cannot be described by single regression. On one hand referral visitors are
well-fitted on linear regression with low impact. On the other hand, direct
visitors made a huge impact on page views. The higher connection speed does not
simply imply higher impact on page views and the content of web page and the
territory of visitors can help connection speed to describe user behavior.

Social Fingerprinting: detection of spambot groups through DNA-inspired behavioral modeling
Spambot detection in online social networks is a long-lasting challenge
involving the study and design of detection techniques capable of efficiently
identifying ever-evolving spammers. Recently, a new wave of social spambots has
emerged, with advanced human-like characteristics that allow them to go
undetected even by current state-of-the-art algorithms. In this paper, we show
that efficient spambots detection can be achieved via an in-depth analysis of
their collective behaviors exploiting the digital DNA technique for modeling
the behaviors of social network users. Inspired by its biological counterpart,
in the digital DNA representation the behavioral lifetime of a digital account
is encoded in a sequence of characters. Then, we define a similarity measure
for such digital DNA sequences. We build upon digital DNA and the similarity
between groups of users to characterize both genuine accounts and spambots.
Leveraging such characterization, we design the Social Fingerprinting
technique, which is able to discriminate among spambots and genuine accounts in
both a supervised and an unsupervised fashion. We finally evaluate the
effectiveness of Social Fingerprinting and we compare it with three
state-of-the-art detection algorithms. Among the peculiarities of our approach
is the possibility to apply off-the-shelf DNA analysis techniques to study
online users behaviors and to efficiently rely on a limited number of
lightweight account characteristics
Knowledge will Propel Machine Understanding of Content: Extrapolating from Current Examples
Machine Learning has been a big success story during the AI resurgence. One
particular stand out success relates to learning from a massive amount of data.
In spite of early assertions of the unreasonable effectiveness of data, there
is increasing recognition for utilizing knowledge whenever it is available or
can be created purposefully. In this paper, we discuss the indispensable role
of knowledge for deeper understanding of content where (i) large amounts of
training data are unavailable, (ii) the objects to be recognized are complex,
(e.g., implicit entities and highly subjective content), and (iii) applications
need to use complementary or related data in multiple modalities/media. What
brings us to the cusp of rapid progress is our ability to (a) create relevant
and reliable knowledge and (b) carefully exploit knowledge to enhance ML/NLP
techniques. Using diverse examples, we seek to foretell unprecedented progress
in our ability for deeper understanding and exploitation of multimodal data and

Tracking the History and Evolution of Entities: Entity-centric Temporal Analysis of Large Social Media Archives
How did the popularity of the Greek Prime Minister evolve in 2015? How did
the predominant sentiment about him vary during that period? Were there any
controversial sub-periods? What other entities were related to him during these
periods? To answer these questions, one needs to analyze archived documents and
data about the query entities, such as old news articles or social media
archives. In particular, user-generated content posted in social networks, like
Twitter and Facebook, can be seen as a comprehensive documentation of our
society, and thus meaningful analysis methods over such archived data are of
immense value for sociologists, historians and other interested parties who
want to study the history and evolution of entities and events. To this end, in
this paper we propose an entity-centric approach to analyze social media
archives and we define measures that allow studying how entities were reflected
in social media in different time periods and under different aspects, like
popularity, attitude, controversiality, and connectedness with other entities.
A case study using a large Twitter archive of four years illustrates the
insights that can be gained by such an entity-centric and multi-aspect
