Review on learning orientations
The need has arises towards the consideration of individual difference to let learners engage in and responsible for their own learning, retain information longer, apply the knowledge more effectively, have positive attitudes towards the subject, have more interest in learning materials, score higher and have high intrinsic motivation level. As regard to the importance of individual differences, Martinez (2000) has grounded a new theory, which is Intentional Learning Theory that covered individual aspects of cognitive, intention, social and emotion. This theory hypothesizes that the fundamental of understanding how individual learns, interact with an environment, performs, engages in learning, experiences learning, and assimilate and accommodate the new knowledge is by understanding individualâs fundamental emotions and intentions about how to use learning, why it is important, when the suitable time, and how it can accomplish personal goals and change. The intent of this theory is to focus on emotions and intentions of an individual regarding why, when and how learning goals are organized, processed, and achieved. In conclusion, Learning Orientations introduced by this theory describes the disposition of an individual in approaching, managing and achieving their learning intentionally and differently from others
Student-Centered Learning: Functional Requirements for Integrated Systems to Optimize Learning
The realities of the 21st-century learner require that schools and educators fundamentally change their practice. "Educators must produce college- and career-ready graduates that reflect the future these students will face. And, they must facilitate learning through means that align with the defining attributes of this generation of learners."Today, we know more than ever about how students learn, acknowledging that the process isn't the same for every student and doesn't remain the same for each individual, depending upon maturation and the content being learned. We know that students want to progress at a pace that allows them to master new concepts and skills, to access a variety of resources, to receive timely feedback on their progress, to demonstrate their knowledge in multiple ways and to get direction, support and feedback fromâas well as collaborate withâexperts, teachers, tutors and other students.The result is a growing demand for student-centered, transformative digital learning using competency education as an underpinning.iNACOL released this paper to illustrate the technical requirements and functionalities that learning management systems need to shift toward student-centered instructional models. This comprehensive framework will help districts and schools determine what systems to use and integrate as they being their journey toward student-centered learning, as well as how systems integration aligns with their organizational vision, educational goals and strategic plans.Educators can use this report to optimize student learning and promote innovation in their own student-centered learning environments. Beyond Personalization: Research Directions in Multistakeholder Recommendation
Recommender systems are personalized information access applications; they
are ubiquitous in today's online environment, and effective at finding items
that meet user needs and tastes. As the reach of recommender systems has
extended, it has become apparent that the single-minded focus on the user
common to academic research has obscured other important aspects of
recommendation outcomes. Properties such as fairness, balance, profitability,
and reciprocity are not captured by typical metrics for recommender system
evaluation. The concept of multistakeholder recommendation has emerged as a
unifying framework for describing and understanding recommendation settings
where the end user is not the sole focus. This article describes the origins of
multistakeholder recommendation, and the landscape of system designs. It
provides illustrative examples of current research, as well as outlining open
questions and research directions for the field.Comment: 64 page

Mobile language learning now and in the future
The widespread ownership of mobile devices such as cellphones, personal media players, personal digital assistants (PDAs), smartphones and wireless laptops means that âmobile learningâ is no longer in the preserve of technical experts and researchers with specialist knowledge. Teachers and learners have begun to integrate mobile technologies into everyday practices and there is evidence of efforts to invent exciting new scenarios of use. Language learning is one of the disciplines that looks set to benefit from these developments. Learners can make good use of the facilities to record and to listen to audio at any time, supported by the rising availability of podcasts and the âalways onâ characteristics of portable devices which encourage spontaneous interactions. Beyond A/B Testing: Sequential Randomization for Developing Interventions in Scaled Digital Learning Environments
Randomized experiments ensure robust causal inference that are critical to
effective learning analytics research and practice. However, traditional
randomized experiments, like A/B tests, are limiting in large scale digital
learning environments. While traditional experiments can accurately compare two
treatment options, they are less able to inform how to adapt interventions to
continually meet learners' diverse needs. In this work, we introduce a trial
design for developing adaptive interventions in scaled digital learning
environments -- the sequential randomized trial (SRT). With the goal of
improving learner experience and developing interventions that benefit all
learners at all times, SRTs inform how to sequence, time, and personalize
interventions. In this paper, we provide an overview of SRTs, and we illustrate
the advantages they hold compared to traditional experiments. We describe a
novel SRT run in a large scale data science MOOC. The trial results
contextualize how learner engagement can be addressed through inclusive
culturally targeted reminder emails. We also provide practical advice for
researchers who aim to run their own SRTs to develop adaptive interventions in
scaled digital learning environments
