Further radiocarbon dates from Dabangay, a mid- to late Holocene settlement site in western Torres Strait

    Get PDF
Dabangay , on the island of Mabuyag, is one of only two known mid-Holocene sites in Torres Strait. Eleven new radiocarbon dates, combined with nine previous determinations, clarify its site formation processes and settlement history. The sequence shows two sustained settlement periods between 7239-3211 cal. BP and 1815 cal. BP-present, with little evidence for use during the intervening period. This differs from Badu 15, approximately 15 km south of Mabuyag, where human activity became sporadic after 6500 cal. BP. There is no evidence for a settlement expansion at 2500 BP as observed at other sites in the western Torres Strait. These differences suggest varied human responses to post-glacial marine transgression and the subsequent sea-level high stand in western Torres Strait

A huntsman’s bite: envenoming from the Malaysian ‘Black & Gold’, Thelcticopis sp. spider (Arachnida: Araneae: Sparassidae: Sparianthinae)

Most spider species in Malaysia are considered harmless and spider bites are rarely reported. This is partly due to the mild effects from the bite and victims do not seek medical treatment in the hospital. To date, there are few well-documented cases of medically significant bites from indigenous spider species in Malaysia. Here, we report the presentation, clinical management and outcome of two patients following a bite by the yet to be described ‘Black & Gold’ Huntsman spider from the genus Thelcticopis in Malaysia. The first case involved a 42-year-old man who was bitten on the tip of the distal phalanx of his right middle finger and presented with severe pain and local swelling. He was treated symptomatically and was discharged well. The second case involved a 57-year-old woman, who was bitten on the proximal phalanx of her right little finger and presented with severe throbbing pain and progressive swelling. She was treated symptomatically and was discharged after 24 hours observation in the medical ward. However, she noted moderate neck and generalized joints pains especially affecting the hips and knees, one day prior to discharge. She was treated with oral analgesia and symptoms resolved within two days

This issue contains an editorial reporting on the very significant gathering of Indigenous educators held in Adelaide, Australia from the 26-30 September 2022. Being the World Indigenous Peoples’ Conference on Education (WIPCE 2022), many members of this network were in attendance including some of our Board members. Michelle Hogue (PhD), Associate Professor & Coordinator of the Indigenous Student Success Cohort (ISSC) at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta, Canada has kindly written our editorial this issue about her experiences at the conference

The Sustainability of Greek Economic and Social Prosperity in Adelaide's Inner Western Suburbs

This paper outlines the results of an economic and social research study in selected inner western suburbs of Adelaide undertaken in 2007. The study area was chosen due to the dominant presence of Greek businesses and social institutions located in the inner suburbs of Adelaide. Businesses and social institutions willing to participate provided case studies to represent Greek contributions arising from Greek immigration into the region. The incorporation of business and social institution survey questionnaires paved the way in determining if the selected Greek business and social institution contributions can be sustained. In general, results indicated that the participating Greek social institutions in the inner western suburbs of Adelaide are in a more vulnerable position than Greek businesses

Stigma and the in(visible) perspectives and expectations of home oxygen therapy among people with chronic breathlessness syndrome: A qualitative study

© The Author(s) 2018. Background: Chronic breathlessness syndrome in the context of advancing disease is distressing for all concerned. Oxygen is commonly prescribed in this setting; however, little is known about the perspectives of breathless people who either are on oxygen or are yet to have it prescribed. Aim: To understand and describe the perspectives and experiences of breathless people towards oxygen use at home. Design: This qualitative study utilised an interpretive description approach using semi-structured interviews and thematic analysis. Setting/participants: A total of 19 people with chronic breathlessness syndrome living in South Australia participated in semi-structured interviews. Participants were divided into sub-groups according to whether they were chronically breathless and (1) not using home oxygen (n = 6), (2) using funded home oxygen for severe hypoxaemia (n = 7) and (3) using home oxygen for palliation outside of funding guidelines (n = 6). Results: Three main themes were identified: (1) managing distress and living with chronic breathlessness syndrome, with or without oxygen, requires a range of self-management strategies; (2) expectations of oxygen use: ‘Not as good as I thought it would be’; and (3) the stigma of using oxygen: the visible and invisible. Conclusion: People living with chronic breathlessness struggle daily with both the progression of the underlying disease and the distressing nature of the syndrome. While oxygen does provide benefit for some people, its use and the perceptions of its use are often associated with both the visible and invisible manifestations of stigma. Clinicians need to promote self-management strategies and give careful thought to the prescribing of home oxygen, especially outside the current funding guidelines

Effects of Solar Shading on Thermal Comfort in Low-income Tropical Housing

This paper evaluates the effects of solar shading strategies on thermal comfort in low-income tropical housing in Uganda. Dynamic thermal simulations are conductedand the effects of various shading strategies including curtains, roof and window overhangs, veranda and tress on solar heat gain and thermal comfort are investigated.Adaptive approach for naturally ventilated buildings defined by CEN standardis used to assess theconditions in the case study buildings. According to the results, although shading significantly reduces solar heat gain, it is less effective inmeeting thermal comfort requirements in low-income tropical houses. Solar shading is however considerably effective during the hottest periods of the year reducing the risk of extreme overheating by up to 52%.In this respect, a north-south building orientation with the main openings on the north elevation is recommended. Due to excessive solar heat gain, large openings on east- and west-facing walls should be avoided
