Lower body design of the ‘iCub’ a human-baby like crawling robot
The development of robotic cognition and a greater understanding of human cognition form two of the current greatest challenges of science. Within the RobotCub project the goal is the development of an embodied robotic child (iCub) with the physical and ultimately cognitive abilities of a 2frac12 year old human baby. The ultimate goal of this project is to provide the cognition research community with an open human like platform for understanding of cognitive systems through the study of cognitive development. In this paper the design of the mechanisms adopted for lower body and particularly for the leg and the waist are outlined. This is accompanied by discussion on the actuator group realisation in order to meet the torque requirements while achieving the dimensional and weight specifications. High speed, precision motion strategies for lightweight structures
Research on space telerobotics is summarized. Adaptive control experiments on the Robotic Arm, Large and Flexible (RALF) were preformed and are documented, along with a joint controller design for the Small Articulated Manipulator (SAM), which is mounted on the RALF. A control algorithm is described as a robust decentralized adaptive control based on a bounded uncertainty approach. Dynamic interactions between SAM and RALF are examined. Unstability of the manipulator is studied from the perspective that the inertial forces generated could actually be used to more rapidly damp out the flexible manipulator's vibration. Currently being studied is the modeling of the constrained dynamics of flexible arms
Control strategy for cooperating disparate manipulators
To manipulate large payloads typical of space construction, the concept of a small arm mounted on the end of a large arm is introduced. The main purposes of such a configuration are to increase the structural stiffness of the robot by bracing against or locking to a stationary frame, and to maintain a firm position constraint between the robot's base and workpieces by grasping them. Possible topologies for a combination of disparate large and small arms are discussed, and kinematics, dynamics, controls, and coordination of the two arms, especially when they brace at the tip of the small arm, are developed. The feasibility and improvement in performance are verified, not only with analytical work and simulation results but also with experiments on the existing arrangement Robotic Arm Large and Flexible and Small Articulated Manipulator
Robust tuning of robot control systems
The computed torque control problem is examined for a robot arm with flexible, geared, joint drive systems which are typical in many industrial robots. The standard computed torque algorithm is not directly applicable to this class of manipulators because of the dynamics introduced by the joint drive system. The proposed approach to computed torque control combines a computed torque algorithm with torque controller at each joint. Three such control schemes are proposed. The first scheme uses the joint torque control system currently implemented on the robot arm and a novel form of the computed torque algorithm. The other two use the standard computed torque algorithm and a novel model following torque control system based on model following techniques. Standard tasks and performance indices are used to evaluate the performance of the controllers. Both numerical simulations and experiments are used in evaluation. The study shows that all three proposed systems lead to improved tracking performance over a conventional PD controller
Geometry-aware Manipulability Learning, Tracking and Transfer
Body posture influences human and robots performance in manipulation tasks,
as appropriate poses facilitate motion or force exertion along different axes.
In robotics, manipulability ellipsoids arise as a powerful descriptor to
analyze, control and design the robot dexterity as a function of the
articulatory joint configuration. This descriptor can be designed according to
different task requirements, such as tracking a desired position or apply a
specific force. In this context, this paper presents a novel
\emph{manipulability transfer} framework, a method that allows robots to learn
and reproduce manipulability ellipsoids from expert demonstrations. The
proposed learning scheme is built on a tensor-based formulation of a Gaussian
mixture model that takes into account that manipulability ellipsoids lie on the
manifold of symmetric positive definite matrices. Learning is coupled with a
geometry-aware tracking controller allowing robots to follow a desired profile
of manipulability ellipsoids. Extensive evaluations in simulation with
redundant manipulators, a robotic hand and humanoids agents, as well as an
experiment with two real dual-arm systems validate the feasibility of the

Robot Impedance Control and Passivity Analysis with Inner Torque and Velocity Feedback Loops
Impedance control is a well-established technique to control interaction
forces in robotics. However, real implementations of impedance control with an
inner loop may suffer from several limitations. Although common practice in
designing nested control systems is to maximize the bandwidth of the inner loop
to improve tracking performance, it may not be the most suitable approach when
a certain range of impedance parameters has to be rendered. In particular, it
turns out that the viable range of stable stiffness and damping values can be
strongly affected by the bandwidth of the inner control loops (e.g. a torque
loop) as well as by the filtering and sampling frequency. This paper provides
an extensive analysis on how these aspects influence the stability region of
impedance parameters as well as the passivity of the system. This will be
supported by both simulations and experimental data. Moreover, a methodology
for designing joint impedance controllers based on an inner torque loop and a
positive velocity feedback loop will be presented. The goal of the velocity
feedback is to increase (given the constraints to preserve stability) the

A Dynamics and Stability Framework for Avian Jumping Take-off
Jumping take-off in birds is an explosive behaviour with the goal of
providing a rapid transition from ground to airborne locomotion. An effective
jump is predicated on the need to maintain dynamic stability through the
acceleration phase. The present study concerns understanding how birds retain
control of body attitude and trajectory during take-off. Cursory observation
suggests that stability is achieved with relatively little cost. However,
analysis of the problem shows that the stability margins during jumping are
actually very small and that stability considerations play a significant role
in selection of appropriate jumping kinematics. We use theoretical models to
understand stability in prehensile take-off (from a perch) and also in
non-prehensile take-off (from the ground). The primary instability is tipping,
defined as rotation of the centre of gravity about the ground contact point.
Tipping occurs when the centre of pressure falls outside the functional foot. A
contribution of the paper is the development of graphical tipping stability
margins for both centre of gravity location and acceleration angle. We show
that the nose-up angular acceleration extends stability bounds forward and is
hence helpful in achieving shallow take-offs. The stability margins are used to
interrogate simulated take-offs of real birds using published experimental
kinematic data from a guinea fowl (ground take-off) and a diamond dove (perch
take-off). For the guinea fowl the initial part of the jump is stable, however
simulations exhibit a stuttering instability not observed experimentally that
is probably due to absence of compliance in the idealised joints. The diamond
dove model confirms that the foot provides an active torque reaction during
take-off, extending the range of stable jump angles by around 45{\deg}.Comment: 21 pages, 11 figures; supplementary material:
