We examine open access to the Spanish scientific literature via investigation of a sample of peer-reviewed articles in seven subject categories. Of the 28,259 papers published in 2000, 26.89% were freely accessible, with the share varying among disciplines. Articles in the social and behavioral sciences were the most widely available for free. This disciplinary divide applies also to the strategies used to offer open access to documents. In clinical medicine, life sciences, arts and humanities and social sciences open access was mainly based on the publishers' side, while subject-based repositories were dominant in physical, chemical and earth sciences and deposit on homepages was the preferred strategy in engineering, computing and technology. Institutional and general repositories seem to play a minor role in providing free access to the Spanish peer-reviewed literature. Papers published in commercial journals are less accessible than those that appear in non-commercial journals, and we found overlaps in almost 20% of papers deposited. The fastest way to gain open access is to deposit in subject-based repositories and the longest delays are related to deposits in homepages and especially to institutional repositories. Open access to Spanish peer-reviewed articles is dominated by the passive mechanism of the >gold route> and the editorial strategy with self-archiving practices in the minority and directed mainly towards subject-based repositories and homepage posting of the papers. The results of this study could serve as a reference point for further study on the evolution of open access in Spain. © Nerea Rodríguez-Armentia and Carlos B. This project examined open access digital repositories in Mexico. The results are based on data drawn from repository websites and guided by three research questions: 1) How do Mexican repositories promote or encourage the development of national standards for preservation of digital information? 2) Are Mexican repositories and their content easily accessible within their host institutions and on the Web? 3) Can repositories serve to promote collaboration and establish connections between scholars? Examining repositories revealed that nearly all rely on software and metadata developed outside of Mexico but that many do take a role in advancing the discussion about digital preservation. Repositories had mixed levels of web visibility, both within their own institution and on the web. Some of the larger repositories that draw from multiple institutions incorporate features that might promote collaboration, but this is less common among repositories focused solely on the research output of one institution.Master of Science in Library Scienc

urpose: The purpose of this research is to study in what ways the open access publishing can improve the scholarly communtication among biomedical sciences in Greece over a period of about five years and provide new roles for health librarians to support open access.\ud Methods: The implementation of Critical Realism as research philosophy allowed the multi-level analysis of the research object; a mixture of research tools were used. Supplementary research methods were adopted to provide more accurate and reliable conclusions. The Literature review contributed to the identification of the open access publishing context and the relations which were forming and re-forming in it. Additionally, similar studies were found and the research gaps were identified as well. Bibliometrics demonstrated the participation of Greek scientists in world research could be evaluated. The research was conducted in five world databases (PUBMED, SCI, BIOMED CENTRAL, DOAJ, GOOGLE) for two different periods (2006-2007 and 2011). Publishers? aggrements provided information about the role of Greek biomedical publishers to the awareness of Greek biomedical scientists on journal related issues such as copyright. Additionally, and journal cost analysis presented publishers? subscription and open access policies and provided an approach of the costs requested for the access to journals. Web 2.0 offers new scholarly communication channels that seem to be cheaper and effective ones. The participation of Greek biomedical scientists in social networks such as ResearchGate, LinkedIn was analysed to evaluate the trends towards these new information sources. Case study methodology provided the qualitative and quantitative tools to explain the attitudes and awareness of Greek biomedical stakeholders about open access publishing and open access biomedical journals and also helped to the longitudinal study of the changes. A questionnaire survey among biomedical scientists took place in three phases (2007-early in 2010, September 2010 to May 2011). In addition, Greek biomedical publishers were interviewed in January and February 2010 .\ud Findings: The bibliometric findings indicated an increasing participation of Greek scientists and Greek biomedical journals in world research. Greek biomedical scientists also use social networking as a means of scholarly communication. The questionnaire surveys showed that the physicians are the most active researchers and more familiar with the open access publishing concept. However, across all the phases the majority of Greek biomedical scientists seem to be unaware of aspects of publishing in open access journals, although by the third phase more participants seem to be aware. Greek biomedical publishers seem to approve the deposit in repositories, and the self-archiving process under specific terms, because, the publishers? agreements analysis demonstrated, the publishers want to be the copyright holders and information about authors? rights is omitted. Biomedical scientists are confused over copyright. As far as cost analyses are concerned, the journal prices depend on the publisher (commercial or scientific) and the subscriber (the institutional prices are higher than individual ones). The findngs were interpreted according to Roger?s diffusion of innovations theory and Lewin?s force field analysis.\ud Conclusions: Open access seems to be acceptable in Greece but the stakeholders, including libraries, need to co-operate more. Greek academic biomedical libraries can actively reinforce the driving forces and reduce the restraining forces (around copyright, mainly) (Lewin?s Force Field Analysis) in order to move into the ?refreeze stage?. However, institutional repositories do seem to be an innovation that (according to Rogers? theory) will take time to develop

Abstract : In this study are analyzed research articles on Open Access (OA) indexed in the Scopus database, published from 2001 to 2015 in scientific journals, in order to: a) propose a classification scheme of OA sub-themes; b) classify the research articles on OA; c) check the progress of OA sub-themes; and d) organize an OA bibliography. Methods of descriptive statistics and content analysis were used to analyze a sample of 347 research articles. As a result, a classification scheme about OA was proposed, in which eight categories were established, each one representing a sub-theme, they are: 1) Awareness, Perceptions and Attitudes toward OA; 2) Overview, Current State and Growth of OA; 3) OA Citation Performance and Other Impact Measures; 4) OA Economics and its Implications on the Publishing Market; 5) Technical Development, System Features and Other Technological Issues; 6) Quality Control and Visibility; 7) Legal and Ethical Aspects; 8) OA Movement, Philosophy, Values and Principles. It was found that almost 50% of the articles were classified in two of the eight categories proposed, Overview, Current State and Growth of OA, with 98 articles (28,2%), and Awareness, Perceptions and Attitudes toward OA, with 75 articles (21,6%). This study was able to reveal a continuous and growing interest of the research community to conduct case studies devoted to the analysis of the development or evolution of the OA regarding certain groups, institutions, regions and periods, and how different actors perceive and approach the OA movement. In addition, it was possible to recognize the inherent difficulty of the classification process given its subjective nature, which results in a diversity of approaches or points of view that can be used in the definition of the categories and subtopics, as well as in the criteria established for the selection, analysis and classification of the works. In the bibliography organized in this work, the references of the analyzed articles are listed according to the proposed classification scheme
