Visual Search at eBay
In this paper, we propose a novel end-to-end approach for scalable visual
search infrastructure. We discuss the challenges we faced for a massive
volatile inventory like at eBay and present our solution to overcome those. We
harness the availability of large image collection of eBay listings and
state-of-the-art deep learning techniques to perform visual search at scale.
Supervised approach for optimized search limited to top predicted categories
and also for compact binary signature are key to scale up without compromising
accuracy and precision. Both use a common deep neural network requiring only a
single forward inference. The system architecture is presented with in-depth
discussions of its basic components and optimizations for a trade-off between
search relevance and latency. This solution is currently deployed in a
distributed cloud infrastructure and fuels visual search in eBay ShopBot and
Close5. We show benchmark on ImageNet dataset on which our approach is faster
and more accurate than several unsupervised baselines. We share our learnings
with the hope that visual search becomes a first class citizen for all large
scale search engines rather than an afterthought.Comment: To appear in 23rd SIGKDD Conference on Knowledge Discovery and Data

Heuristic Solutions for Loading in Flexible Manufacturing Systems
Production planning in flexible manufacturing system deals with the efficient organization of the production resources in order to meet a given production schedule. It is a complex problem and typically leads to several hierarchical subproblems that need to be solved sequentially or simultaneously. Loading is one of the planning subproblems that has to addressed. It involves assigning the necessary operations and tools among the various machines in some optimal fashion to achieve the production of all selected part types. In this paper, we first formulate the loading problem as a 0-1 mixed integer program and then propose heuristic procedures based on Lagrangian relaxation and tabu search to solve the problem. Computational results are presented for all the algorithms and finally, conclusions drawn based on the results are discussed
Notes on Cloud computing principles
This letter provides a review of fundamental distributed systems and economic
Cloud computing principles. These principles are frequently deployed in their
respective fields, but their inter-dependencies are often neglected. Given that
Cloud Computing first and foremost is a new business model, a new model to sell
computational resources, the understanding of these concepts is facilitated by
treating them in unison. Here, we review some of the most important concepts
and how they relate to each other
When Can You Fold a Map?
We explore the following problem: given a collection of creases on a piece of
paper, each assigned a folding direction of mountain or valley, is there a flat
folding by a sequence of simple folds? There are several models of simple
folds; the simplest one-layer simple fold rotates a portion of paper about a
crease in the paper by +-180 degrees. We first consider the analogous questions
in one dimension lower -- bending a segment into a flat object -- which lead to
interesting problems on strings. We develop efficient algorithms for the
recognition of simply foldable 1D crease patterns, and reconstruction of a
sequence of simple folds. Indeed, we prove that a 1D crease pattern is
flat-foldable by any means precisely if it is by a sequence of one-layer simple
folds.
Next we explore simple foldability in two dimensions, and find a surprising
contrast: ``map'' folding and variants are polynomial, but slight
generalizations are NP-complete. Specifically, we develop a linear-time
algorithm for deciding foldability of an orthogonal crease pattern on a
rectangular piece of paper, and prove that it is (weakly) NP-complete to decide
foldability of (1) an orthogonal crease pattern on a orthogonal piece of paper,
(2) a crease pattern of axis-parallel and diagonal (45-degree) creases on a
square piece of paper, and (3) crease patterns without a mountain/valley
assignment.Comment: 24 pages, 19 figures. Version 3 includes several improvements thanks

JaxNet: Scalable Blockchain Network
Today's world is organized based on merit and value. A single global currency
that's decentralized is needed for a global economy. Bitcoin is a partial
solution to this need, however it suffers from scalability problems which
prevent it from being mass-adopted. Also, the deflationary nature of bitcoin
motivates people to hoard and speculate on them instead of using them for day
to day transactions. We propose a scalable, decentralized cryptocurrency that
is based on Proof of Work. The solution involves having parallel chains in a
closed network using a mechanism which rewards miners proportional to their
effort in maintaining the network. The proposed design introduces a novel
approach for solving scalability problem in blockchain network based on merged
mining.Comment: 55 pages. 10 figure
