Gamified Workshops as Drivers for Attitudinal and Behavioral Shifts toward Sustainable Business Practices: The Role of Enjoyment, Curiosity and External Regulation

Gamification has recently gained a great deal of attention in various research communities. The application of game elements in non-game contexts has shown a lot of potential and the expectations of researchers and businesses are high. However, few studies exist that empirically test the effectiveness of gamification applications in business settings. To fill this gap, we present results from workshops that promoted environmentally friendly business practices. 261 individuals participated in a study in which various gamification elements were applied. Our findings illustrate that enjoyment and curiosity, both of which are strongly fostered by gamification elements, exert a significant influence on individuals’ attitudes and subsequently their behavioral intentions to adopt sustainable business practices. In contrast, the impact of external regulation turned out to be insignificant. The findings highlight the important role of enjoyment and curiosity for a sustainable change and bear important implications for academics and practitioners

Employees’ Collaborative Use of Green Information Systems

Green information system (GIS) plays an important role in the sustainable development of organizations, especially for those in emerging economy that face both economic and environmental pressures. To fulfill the purpose, employees need to work together on tasks using all kinds of GIS functions such as online collaboration and remote meeting. Researchers study GIS adoption at either the organizational level or the individual level, but few examine such technology-enabled collaboration as a cross-level phenomenon. Extending the belief-action-outcome (BAO) framework, this study investigates the motivation, effort and performance of collaborative GIS use. In particular, there are two aspects of motivation: GIS strategy as extrinsic motivation and GIS belief as intrinsic motivation, as well as two types of performance: tangible environmental performance and intangible green image. Collective GIS effort mediates the relationships between motivation and performance variables. Empirical evidence based on survey observations collected in China supports most hypothesized relationships. The findings provide helpful insights on the best practices to promote the collaborative use of GIS for corporate sustainability

Greening the Personal Internet Use: Findings from a literature review

Research addressing the greening of internet user behaviors at hedonic and utilitarian levels is scarce. To identify dimensions, scales and strong relationships arising from motivation, we reviewed a sample of research articles related to the personal green IT context. We used Self-determination theory as the theoretical framework to categorize factors into different motivation dimensions. A qualitative literature review analyzes five pair-wise associations between motivation constructs of the theory and green IT use. This work builds on the prior research related to environmental motivation by summarizing the measures applied to the evaluation of personal green IT behaviors and by examining the relationships broadly defined in the Self-determination theory, distinguishing between hedonic and utilitarian green IT use

Investigating the antecedents to teaching green information technology (Green IT) : a survey of student teachers in Swaziland

Summary in English, Afrikaans and ZuluThe natural environment is important for human existence and the ubiquity of Information Technology (IT) has negatively impacted on the natural environment. Green IT offers to address these negative effects. However, since Green IT practices are often not common knowledge, it is vital that they are taught to others. Teachers typically have the skills and opportunities to teach many people. The research problem was the lack of research focusing on the teaching of Green IT in the context of the urgent need for it and teachers’ limited knowledge and competencies relating to Green IT. The study employed a survey research strategy, involving exploratory factor analysis, ANOVA and structural equation modeling (SEM). The main findings indicate that allocating time and resources to improve student teachers’ level of awareness, perceived behavioural control and person-related beliefs would positively influence their intention to teach Green IT, and, in turn, their Green IT teaching. Imvelo yemvelo ibalulekile ekubeni khona komuntu nokutholakala kobuchwepheshe bezokwazisa kuye kwaba nomthelela omubi emvelweni yemvelo.
