Investigating the interplay between fundamentals of national research systems: performance, investments and international collaborations
We discuss, at the macro-level of nations, the contribution of research
funding and rate of international collaboration to research performance, with
important implications for the science of science policy. In particular, we
cross-correlate suitable measures of these quantities with a
scientometric-based assessment of scientific success, studying both the average
performance of nations and their temporal dynamics in the space defined by
these variables during the last decade. We find significant differences among
nations in terms of efficiency in turning (financial) input into
bibliometrically measurable output, and we confirm that growth of international
collaboration positively correlate with scientific success, with significant
benefits brought by EU integration policies. Various geo-cultural clusters of
nations naturally emerge from our analysis. We critically discuss the possible
factors that potentially determine the observed patterns
International Stem Cell Collaboration: How Disparate Policies between the United States and the United Kingdom Impact Research
As the scientific community globalizes, it is increasingly important to understand the effects of international collaboration on the quality and quantity of research produced. While it is generally assumed that international collaboration enhances the quality of research, this phenomenon is not well examined. Stem cell research is unique in that it is both politically charged and a research area that often generates international collaborations, making it an ideal case through which to examine international collaborations. Furthermore, with promising medical applications, the research area is dynamic and responsive to a globalizing science environment. Thus, studying international collaborations in stem cell research elucidates the role of existing international networks in promoting quality research, as well as the effects that disparate national policies might have on research. This study examined the impact of collaboration on publication significance in the United States and the United Kingdom, world leaders in stem cell research with disparate policies. We reviewed publications by US and UK authors from 2008, along with their citation rates and the political factors that may have contributed to the number of international collaborations. The data demonstrated that international collaborations significantly increased an article's impact for UK and US investigators. While this applied to UK authors whether they were corresponding or secondary, this effect was most significant for US authors who were corresponding authors. While the UK exhibited a higher proportion of international publications than the US, this difference was consistent with overall trends in international scientific collaboration. The findings suggested that national stem cell policy differences and regulatory mechanisms driving international stem cell research in the US and UK did not affect the frequency of international collaborations, or even the countries with which the US and UK most often collaborated. Geographical and traditional collaborative relationships were the predominate considerations in establishing international collaborations
Exploring International Collaborations in Research, Preparation, and Practice
This paper is a collection of my thoughts in regard to the notion of international research in educational leadership. I have conducted and been involved in a number of research projects since beginning full-time employment in higher education that have allowed me to generate some perspectives on educational leadership in other cultures and social systems. I have also run masters programmes in two different universities that had an international focus as one of the principal aims. Finally I have studied a range of literature relating to cultural differences between nation states and engaged in discourse with many scholars from across the world. As a consequence I consider I may be able to offer opinion on the options for research in the future

International Collaborations: Inspiring Active Learning in Higher Education
International collaborations can present various challenges; however, with strong leadership and support, as well as through leveraging a variety of online collaborative tools, the results can be great. In this paper, we discuss the process involved in the design, development, and utilization of an openly available active learning handbook that was created by colleagues at three institutions: one in Dublin, Ireland and two in Oshawa, Canada. We discuss the journey that inspired this collaborative project and address some of the unique issues around post-conference collaborations. To conclude, we highlight some applications of the handbook across our institutions and beyond
