    Models of Social Groups in Blogosphere Based on Information about Comment Addressees and Sentiments

    This work concerns the analysis of number, sizes and other characteristics of groups identified in the blogosphere using a set of models identifying social relations. These models differ regarding identification of social relations, influenced by methods of classifying the addressee of the comments (they are either the post author or the author of a comment on which this comment is directly addressing) and by a sentiment calculated for comments considering the statistics of words present and connotation. The state of a selected blog portal was analyzed in sequential, partly overlapping time intervals.     A Survey of Social Network Forensics

    Social networks in any form, specifically online social networks (OSNs), are becoming a part of our everyday life in this new millennium especially with the advanced and simple communication technologies through easily accessible devices such as smartphones and tablets. The data generated through the use of these technologies need to be analyzed for forensic purposes when criminal and terrorist activities are involved. In order to deal with the forensic implications of social networks, current research on both digital forensics and social networks need to be incorporated and understood. This will help digital forensics investigators to predict, detect and even prevent any criminal activities in different forms. It will also help researchers to develop new models / techniques in the future. This paper provides literature review of the social network forensics methods, models, and techniques in order to provide an overview to the researchers for their future works as well as the law enforcement investigators for their investigations when crimes are committed in the cyber space. It also provides awareness and defense methods for OSN users in order to protect them against to social attacks

    Predicting Community Evolution in Social Networks

    Nowadays, sustained development of different social media can be observed worldwide. One of the relevant research domains intensively explored recently is analysis of social communities existing in social media as well as prediction of their future evolution taking into account collected historical evolution chains. These evolution chains proposed in the paper contain group states in the previous time frames and its historical transitions that were identified using one out of two methods: Stable Group Changes Identification (SGCI) and Group Evolution Discovery (GED). Based on the observed evolution chains of various length, structural network features are extracted, validated and selected as well as used to learn classification models. The experimental studies were performed on three real datasets with different profile: DBLP, Facebook and Polish blogosphere. The process of group prediction was analysed with respect to different classifiers as well as various descriptive feature sets extracted from evolution chains of different length. The results revealed that, in general, the longer evolution chains the better predictive abilities of the classification models. However, chains of length 3 to 7 enabled the GED-based method to almost reach its maximum possible prediction quality.     INVESTIGATING CRIME-TO-TWITTER RELATIONSHIPS IN URBAN ENVIRONMENTS - FACILITATING A VIRTUAL NEIGHBORHOOD WATCH

    Social networks offer vast potential for marketing agencies, as members freely provide private information, for instance on their current situation, opinions, tastes, and feelings. The use of social networks to feed into crime platforms has been acknowledged to build a kind of a virtual neighborhood watch. Current attempts that tried to automatically connect news from social networks with crime platforms have concentrated on documentation of past events, but neglected the opportunity to use Twitter data as a decision support system to detect future crimes. In this work, we attempt to unleash the wisdom of crowds materialized in tweets from Twitter. This requires to look at Tweets that have been sent within a vicinity of each other. Based on the aggregated Tweets traffic we correlate them with crime types. Apparently, crimes such as disturbing the peace or homicide exhibit different Tweet patterns before the crime has been committed. We show that these tweet patterns can strengthen the explanation of criminal activity in urban areas. On top of that, we go beyond pure explanatory approaches and use predictive analytics to provide evidence that Twitter data can improve the prediction of crimes

    A visual multivariate dynamic egocentric network exploration tool

    Visualizing multivariate dynamic networks is a challenging task. The evolution of the dynamic network within the temporal axis must be depicted in conjunction with the associated multivariate attributes. In this thesis, an exploratory visual analytics tool is proposed to display multivariate dynamic networks with spatial attributes. The proposed tool displays the distribution of multivariate temporal domain and network attributes in scattered views. Moreover, in order to expose the evolution of a single or a group of nodes in the dynamic network along the temporal axis, an egocentric approach is applied in which a node is represented with its neighborhood as an ego-network. This approach allows users to observe a node's surrounding environment along the temporal axis. On top of the traditional ego-network visualization methods, such as timelines, the proposed tool encodes ego-networks as feature vectors consisting of the domain and network attributes and projects them onto 2D views. As a result, distances between projected ego-networks represent the dissimilarity across temporal axis in a single view. The proposed tool is demonstrated with a real-world use case scenario on merchant networks obtained from a one-year long credit card transaction
