    Parallelized Interactive Machine Learning on Autonomous Vehicles

    Deep reinforcement learning (deep RL) has achieved superior performance in complex sequential tasks by learning directly from image input. A deep neural network is used as a function approximator and requires no specific state information. However, one drawback of using only images as input is that this approach requires a prohibitively large amount of training time and data for the model to learn the state feature representation and approach reasonable performance. This is not feasible in real-world applications, especially when the data are expansive and training phase could introduce disasters that affect human safety. In this work, we use a human demonstration approach to speed up training for learning features and use the resulting pre-trained model to replace the neural network in the deep RL Deep Q-Network (DQN), followed by human interaction to further refine the model. We empirically evaluate our approach by using only a human demonstration model and modified DQN with human demonstration model included in the Microsoft AirSim car simulator. Our results show that (1) pre-training with human demonstration in a supervised learning approach is better and much faster at discovering features than DQN alone, (2) initializing the DQN with a pre-trained model provides a significant improvement in training time and performance even with limited human demonstration, and (3) providing the ability for humans to supply suggestions during DQN training can speed up the network's convergence on an optimal policy, as well as allow it to learn more complex policies that are harder to discover by random exploration.Comment: 6 pages, NAECON 2018 - IEEE National Aerospace and Electronics Conferenc

    Interactive Machine Learning for Generative Models

    Effective control of generative media models remains a challenge for specialised generation tasks, including where no suitable dataset to train a contrastive language model exists. We describe a new approach that enables users to interactively create bespoke text-to-media mappings for arbitrary media generation models, using a small number of examples. This approach - very distinct from contrastive language pretraining approaches - facilitates new strategies for using language to drive media creation in creative contexts not well served by existing methods

    Interactive Machine Learning for End-User

    User interaction with intelligent systems need not be limited to interaction where pre-trained software has intelligence “baked in.” End-user training, including interactive machine learning (IML) approaches, can enable users to create and customise systems themselves. We propose that the user experience of these users is worth considering. Furthermore, the user experience of system developers—people who may train and configure both learning algorithms and their user interfaces—also deserves attention. We additionally propose that IML can improve user experiences by supporting usercentred design processes, and that there is a further role for user-centred design in improving interactive and classical machine learning systems. We are developing this approach and embodying it through the design of a new User Innovation Toolkit, in the context of the European Commission-funded project RAPID-MIX

    Indiana University-Purdue University Indianapolis (IUPUI)This study mainly focuses on applying visualization techniques on human brain data for data exploration, quality control, and hypothesis discovery. It mainly consists of two parts: multi-modal data visualization and interactive machine learning. For multi-modal data visualization, a major challenge is how to integrate structural, functional and connectivity data to form a comprehensive visual context. We develop a new integrated visualization solution for brain imaging data by combining scientific and information visualization techniques within the context of the same anatomic structure. For interactive machine learning, we propose a new visual analytics approach to interactive machine learning. In this approach, multi-dimensional data visualization techniques are employed to facilitate user interactions with the machine learning process. This allows dynamic user feedback in different forms, such as data selection, data labeling, and data correction, to enhance the efficiency of model building

    Reasoning Under Uncertainty: Towards Collaborative Interactive Machine Learning

    In this paper, we present the current state-of-the-art of decision making (DM) and machine learning (ML) and bridge the two research domains to create an integrated approach of complex problem solving based on human and computational agents. We present a novel classification of ML, emphasizing the human-in-the-loop in interactive ML (iML) and more specific on collaborative interactive ML (ciML), which we understand as a deep integrated version of iML, where humans and algorithms work hand in hand to solve complex problems. Both humans and computers have specific strengths and weaknesses and integrating humans into machine learning processes might be a very efficient way for tackling problems. This approach bears immense research potential for various domains, e.g., in health informatics or in industrial applications. We outline open questions and name future challenges that have to be addressed by the research community to enable the use of collaborative interactive machine learning for problem solving in a large scale
