Pooling Faces: Template based Face Recognition with Pooled Face Images
We propose a novel approach to template based face recognition. Our dual goal
is to both increase recognition accuracy and reduce the computational and
storage costs of template matching. To do this, we leverage on an approach
which was proven effective in many other domains, but, to our knowledge, never
fully explored for face images: average pooling of face photos. We show how
(and why!) the space of a template's images can be partitioned and then pooled
based on image quality and head pose and the effect this has on accuracy and
template size. We perform extensive tests on the IJB-A and Janus CS2 template
based face identification and verification benchmarks. These show that not only
does our approach outperform published state of the art despite requiring far
fewer cross template comparisons, but also, surprisingly, that image pooling
performs on par with deep feature pooling.Comment: Appeared in the IEEE Computer Society Workshop on Biometrics, IEEE

Coupled Deep Learning for Heterogeneous Face Recognition
Heterogeneous face matching is a challenge issue in face recognition due to
large domain difference as well as insufficient pairwise images in different
modalities during training. This paper proposes a coupled deep learning (CDL)
approach for the heterogeneous face matching. CDL seeks a shared feature space
in which the heterogeneous face matching problem can be approximately treated
as a homogeneous face matching problem. The objective function of CDL mainly
includes two parts. The first part contains a trace norm and a block-diagonal
prior as relevance constraints, which not only make unpaired images from
multiple modalities be clustered and correlated, but also regularize the
parameters to alleviate overfitting. An approximate variational formulation is
introduced to deal with the difficulties of optimizing low-rank constraint
directly. The second part contains a cross modal ranking among triplet domain
specific images to maximize the margin for different identities and increase
data for a small amount of training samples. Besides, an alternating
minimization method is employed to iteratively update the parameters of CDL.
Experimental results show that CDL achieves better performance on the
challenging CASIA NIR-VIS 2.0 face recognition database, the IIIT-D Sketch
database, the CUHK Face Sketch (CUFS), and the CUHK Face Sketch FERET (CUFSF),
which significantly outperforms state-of-the-art heterogeneous face recognition
methods.Comment: AAAI 201
Reliability of Decision Support in Cross-spectral Biometric-enabled Systems
This paper addresses the evaluation of the performance of the decision
support system that utilizes face and facial expression biometrics. The
evaluation criteria include risk of error and related reliability of decision,
as well as their contribution to the changes in the perceived operator's trust
in the decision. The relevant applications include human behavior monitoring
and stress detection in individuals and teams, and in situational awareness
system. Using an available database of cross-spectral videos of faces and
facial expressions, we conducted a series of experiments that demonstrate the
phenomenon of biases in biometrics that affect the evaluated measures of the
performance in human-machine systems.Comment: submitted to IEEE International Conference on Systems, Man, and
