Adding Policy-based Control to Mobile Hosts Switching between Streaming Proxies

    Get PDF
We add a simple policy-based control component to mobile hosts that enables them to control the continuous reception of live multimedia content (e.g. a TV broadcast) while they switch between different distributors of that content. Policy-based control provides a flexible means to automate the switching behavior of mobile hosts. The policies react to changes in the mobile host's environment (e.g. when a hotspot network appears) and determine when and how to invoke an earlier developed application-level protocol to discover the capabilities (e.g. supported encodings) of the content distributors and to execute the switches. The design of the control component is based on the IETF policy model, but extended and applied at the application-level instead of at the network-level. We implemented the system and deployed it in a small-scale test bed

The Objective of topology control mechanisms (TCM) is to modify the natural network topology toward a determined objective. In MANETs the objective is to minimize power consumption and/or interference. In general topology control is achieved through deliberate changes in transmission power (and possibly other parameters such as antenna direction and channel selection) that directly affect the local connectivity of a node, and consequently affect the whole topology of the network. By focusing on the stage in which information is collected in an existing topology control algorithm called XTC, this paper shows the possibility of extending the network performance optimization present in this algorithm. It is then an addition to an already existing optimization concept.

A Discussion on Policy-based Management using Context Mobility in Ad-Hoc Networking

Much of the current research in the field of Information and Communication Technology has focused on pervasive and ubiquitous computing. It is an environment where converging technologies and devices are distributed, highly mobile and often intelligent. This discussion paper looks at using Policy Based Network Management (PBNM) with Context to simplify configuration management for mobile or ad hoc networks

Intelligent access and mobility management in heterogeneous wireless networks using policy

    No full text
The next generation of mobile networks will utilise multiple radio access technologies. These heterogeneous wireless networks will enable the user to seamlessly roam between the different access technologies to maintain network connectivity and satisfactory QoS. Network operators will be able to select an access network on the arrival of a new call or handover request. Selecting the most optimal connection and controlling access to the available networks is an important consideration for overall network stability and providing guaranteed QoS. In this paper we propose an intelligent call admission control and mobility management architecture using policy-based management. A call admission policy admits a new user based on the current load and a predefined service mix. A network health monitor continuously updates the residual capacity by observing the quality of the current connections. The mobility management policy focuses on handover control between the available access networks. Mobiles can be selected for forced handover when a network reaches a congested state. A selection policy controls the mobile selection procedure.
