Momentum Control of Humanoid Robots with Series Elastic Actuators
Humanoid robots may require a degree of compliance at the joint level for
improving efficiency, shock tolerance, and safe interaction with humans. The
presence of joint elasticity, however, complexifies the design of balancing and
walking controllers. This paper proposes a control framework for extending
momentum based controllers developed for stiff actuators to the case of series
elastic actuators. The key point is to consider the motor velocities as an
intermediate control input, and then apply high-gain control to stabilise the
desired motor velocities achieving momentum control. Simulations carried out on
a model of the robot iCub verify the soundness of the proposed approach
Automatic Gain Tuning of a Momentum Based Balancing Controller for Humanoid Robots
This paper proposes a technique for automatic gain tuning of a momentum based
balancing controller for humanoid robots. The controller ensures the
stabilization of the centroidal dynamics and the associated zero dynamics.
Then, the closed-loop, constrained joint space dynamics is linearized and the
controller's gains are chosen so as to obtain desired properties of the
linearized system. Symmetry and positive definiteness constraints of gain
matrices are enforced by proposing a tracker for symmetric positive definite

Review of Anthropomorphic Head Stabilisation and Verticality Estimation in Robots
International audienceIn many walking, running, flying, and swimming animals, including mammals, reptiles, and birds, the vestibular system plays a central role for verticality estimation and is often associated with a head sta-bilisation (in rotation) behaviour. Head stabilisation, in turn, subserves gaze stabilisation, postural control, visual-vestibular information fusion and spatial awareness via the active establishment of a quasi-inertial frame of reference. Head stabilisation helps animals to cope with the computational consequences of angular movements that complicate the reliable estimation of the vertical direction. We suggest that this strategy could also benefit free-moving robotic systems, such as locomoting humanoid robots, which are typically equipped with inertial measurements units. Free-moving robotic systems could gain the full benefits of inertial measurements if the measurement units are placed on independently orientable platforms, such as a human-like heads. We illustrate these benefits by analysing recent humanoid robots design and control approaches
Learning-based methods for planning and control of humanoid robots
Nowadays, humans and robots are more and more likely to coexist as time goes by. The anthropomorphic nature of humanoid robots facilitates physical human-robot interaction, and makes social human-robot interaction more natural. Moreover, it makes humanoids ideal candidates for many applications related to tasks and environments designed for humans.
No matter the application, an ubiquitous requirement for the humanoid is to possess proper locomotion skills. Despite long-lasting research, humanoid locomotion is still far from being a trivial task. A common approach to address humanoid locomotion consists in decomposing its complexity by means of a model-based hierarchical control architecture. To cope with computational constraints, simplified models for the humanoid are employed in some of the architectural layers. At the same time, the redundancy of the humanoid with respect to the locomotion task as well as the closeness of such a task to human locomotion suggest a data-driven approach to learn it directly from experience.
This thesis investigates the application of learning-based techniques to planning and control of humanoid locomotion. In particular, both deep reinforcement learning and deep supervised learning are considered to address humanoid locomotion tasks in a crescendo of complexity.
First, we employ deep reinforcement learning to study the spontaneous emergence of balancing and push recovery strategies for the humanoid, which represent essential prerequisites for more complex locomotion tasks.
Then, by making use of motion capture data collected from human subjects, we employ deep supervised learning to shape the robot walking trajectories towards an improved human-likeness.
The proposed approaches are validated on real and simulated humanoid robots. Specifically, on two versions of the iCub humanoid: iCub v2.7 and iCub v3

Belief-Space Planning for Resourceful Manipulation and Mobility
Robots are increasingly expected to work in partially observable and unstructured environments. They need to select actions that exploit perceptual and motor resourcefulness to manage uncertainty based on the demands of the task and environment. The research in this dissertation makes two primary contributions. First, it develops a new concept in resourceful robot platforms called the UMass uBot and introduces the sixth and seventh in the uBot series. uBot-6 introduces multiple postural configurations that enable different modes of mobility and manipulation to meet the needs of a wide variety of tasks and environmental constraints. uBot-7 extends this with the use of series elastic actuators (SEAs) to improve manipulation capabilities and support safer operation around humans. The resourcefulness of these robots is complemented with a belief-space planning framework that enables task-driven action selection in the context of the partially observable environment. The framework uses a compact but expressive state representation based on object models. We extend an existing affordance-based object model, called an aspect transition graph (ATG), with geometric information. This enables object-centric modeling of features and actions, making the model much more expressive without increasing the complexity. A novel task representation enables the belief-space planner to perform general object-centric tasks ranging from recognition to manipulation of objects. The approach supports the efficient handling of multi-object scenes. The combination of the physical platform and the planning framework are evaluated in two novel, challenging, partially observable planning domains. The ARcube domain provides a large population of objects that are highly ambiguous. Objects can only be differentiated using multi-modal sensor information and manual interactions. In the dexterous mobility domain, a robot can employ multiple mobility modes to complete navigation tasks under a variety of possible environment constraints. Ground Reference Points in Legged Locomotion: Definitions, Biological Trajectories and Control Implications
The Zero Moment Point (ZMP) and Centroidal Moment Pivot (CMP) are important ground reference points used for motion identification and control in biomechanics and legged robotics. Using a consistent mathematical notation, we define and compare the ground reference points. We outline the various methodologies that can be employed in their estimation. Subsequently, we analyze the ZMP and CMP trajectories for level-ground, steady-state human walking. We conclude the chapter with a discussion of the significance of the ground reference points to legged robotic control systems. In the Appendix, we prove the equivalence of the ZMP and the center of pressure for horizontal ground surfaces, and their uniqueness for more complex contact topologies. Since spin angular momentum has been shown to remain small throughout the walking cycle, we hypothesize that the CMP will never leave the ground support base throughout the entire gait cycle, closely tracking the ZMP. We test this hypothesis using a morphologically realistic human model and kinetic and kinematic gait data measured from ten human subjects walking at self-selected speeds. We find that the CMP never leaves the ground support base, and the mean separation distance between the CMP and ZMP is small (14 % of foot length), highlighting how closely the human body regulates spin angular momentum in level ground walking
Human-Likeness Indicator for Robot Posture Control and Balance
Similarly to humans, humanoid robots require posture control and balance to
walk and interact with the environment. In this work posture control in
perturbed conditions is evaluated as a performance test for humanoid control. A
specific performance indicator is proposed: the score is based on the
comparison between the body sway of the tested humanoid standing on a moving
surface and the sway produced by healthy subjects performing the same
experiment. This approach is here oriented to the evaluation of a
human-likeness. The measure is tested using a humanoid robot in order to
demonstrate a typical usage of the proposed evaluation scheme and an example of
