A CONCEPTUAL FRAMEWORK OF INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY INFRASTRUCTURE: THE CRITICAL LINK OF TECHNOLOGY STANDARDS

    Get PDF
Numerous claims have been made regarding the use of information technology (IT) infrastructure for strategic benefit. However, examination of these claims has been hindered by a lack of clarity regarding the nature of the infrastructure construct. This paper develops a framework to provide a more clear conceptualization of infrastructure. The focal point of this framework is that IT standards play a crucial role in the development of effective IT infrastructur

Hungarian IT: Coping with Economic Transition and Globalization

    Get PDF
This paper examines the impact of economic transition on the information technology industry in Hungary. It highlights some of the challenges faced by policy makers and businesses in their efforts to ensure that Hungarian technology capabilities survive the onslaught of fierce competition from abroad, and that the industry continues to grow and innovate in the context of a rapidly globalising economy. The paper is based on extensive field research conducted by the author in Hungary during 1998-2002

Facilitators Of Internet Promotion (E-Brochure) Adoption By Non-Profit Organisations

Internet promotion, otherwise e-brochure (EB) or partial e-commerce adoption by nonprofit organisations denotes the use of the Internet to provide business and service related information by academic institutions (as in the present study), non-profit organisations, religious organisations, and government agencies to reduce their expenses or to improve their operations and customer service. A field survey of Malaysian universities was conducted to determine the key factors that facilitate the adoption of non-business EB. Since EB adoption decision is a strategic one, a comprehensive list of potential facilitators for the strategic use of information technology (IT) was derived from extant literature and used in collecting data from 65 schools and centres in five public universities in Kota Kinabalu and Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia. The data were factoranalysed to determine the key underlying dimensions of facilitators. On the basis of the resulting five dimensions namely, relative advantage orientation, network orientation, information efficiency orientation, innovativeness orientation, and competitiveness orientation, regression analysis was done to determine the impact of the five dimensions on non-business EB adoption

Factors Giving Rise to Digital Payments Service Munificence: The Case of Zimbabwe

Use of digital payments has become prevalent globally, including in countries with developing economies. Yet there is still limited understanding of the factors giving rise to digital payments service munificence in these contexts. This interpretivist study utilized the abductive qualitative content analysis approach to develop propositions and a context sensitive theoretical framework grounded in empirical data on Zimbabwe that explains the underlying factors giving rise to digital payments service munificence. It utilized secondary data from 12 monetary policy statements published online over a period of 6 years. The factors that emerged included technological characteristics and institutional interventions these resonating with diffusion of innovations theory and institutional theory respectively

The Diffusion of the Internet in a Pro-IT Cultural Environment: A Content Analysis of the Singapore Experience

    Get PDF
Despite the magnitude of the Internet phenomenon, relatively few studies investigate the factors influencing its diffusion. This paper seeks to provide a better understanding of the forces that influence the diffusion of the Internet in Singapore. A push-pull framework that incorporates the political, technological, economic, and social factors is developed as the basis for examining this phenomenon. Based on this framework, a content-analytic approach is used to analyze the messages conveyed in Singapore\u27s two local English-medium newspapers. The results show that both push and pull forces predominated in the early stages of Internet diffusion. However, as time went by, the pull forces predominated over the push forces. The results also show that factors such as building telecommunication infrastructure, having on-line information and services, and creating business opportunities were important in the diffusion of the Internet in Singapore

Beyond Economy: Impact of National Cultural Values on Nationwide Broadband Difffusion.

This study examines how the non-conventional factors of national cultural values and government involvement affect the diffusion of broadband Internet technologies in various nations around the world. An innovative element of the study was the examination of the influence patterns at different stages of diffusion, which was measured by the number of years taken to pass a certain threshold level of diffusion. Hierarchical multiple regression analysis was conducted on data from 64 countries that was collected from 1996 to 2006. Prominent national cultural value variables were constructed using survey data from Hofstede and Inglehart’s cross-national surveys. The overall findings of this study indicate that non-conventional factors are significantly correlated with both broadband Internet diffusion level and broadband Internet diffusion speed at each diffusion stage. Furthermore, analysis of broadband Internet diffusion level confirmed that the models explaining nationwide broadband Internet diffusion for developing and developing countries are markedly different. The analysis concludes with implications for further research and public policy in the realm of information and communication technology.Ph.D.CommunicationUniversity of Michigan, Horace H.
