Comparing clothing-mounted sensors with wearable sensors for movement analysis and activity classification
Inertial sensors are a useful instrument for long term monitoring in healthcare. In many cases, inertial sensor devices can be worn as an accessory or integrated into smart textiles. In some situations, it may be beneficial to have data from multiple inertial sensors, rather than relying on a single worn sensor, since this may increase the accuracy of the analysis and better tolerate sensor errors. Integrating multiple sensors into clothing improves the feasibility and practicality of wearing multiple devices every day, in approximately the same location, with less likelihood of incorrect sensor orientation. To facilitate this, the current work investigates the consequences of attaching lightweight sensors to loose clothes. The intention of this paper is to discuss how data from these clothing sensors compare with similarly placed body worn sensors, with additional consideration of the resulting effects on activity recognition. This study compares the similarity between the two signals (body worn and clothing), collected from three different clothing types (slacks, pencil skirt and loose frock), across multiple daily activities (walking, running, sitting, and riding a bus) by calculating correlation coefficients for each sensor pair. Even though the two data streams are clearly different from each other, the results indicate that there is good potential of achieving high classification accuracy when using inertial sensors in clothing
Automatic Identification of Inertial Sensors on the Human Body Segments
In the last few years, inertial sensors (accelerometers and gyroscopes) in combination with magnetic sensors was proven to be a suitable ambulatory alternative to traditional human motion tracking systems based on optical position measurements. While accurate full 6 degrees of freedom information is available [1], these inertial sensor systems still have some drawbacks, e.g. each sensor has to be attached to a certain predefined body segment. The goal of this project is to develop a ‘Click-On-and-Play’ ambulatory 3D human motion capture system, i.e. a set of (wireless) inertial sensors which can be placed on the human body at arbitrary positions, because they will be identified and localized automatically
A Feasibility Study in Measuring Soft Tissue Artifacts on the Upper Leg Using Inertial and Magnetic Sensors
Soft-tissue artifacts cause inaccurate estimates of body segment orientations. The inertial sensor (or optical marker) is orientating (or displacing) with respect to the bone it has to measure, due to muscle and skin movement [1]. In this pilot study 11 inertial and magnetic sensors (MTw, Xsens Technologies) were placed on the rectus femoris, vastus medialis and vastus lateralis (upper leg). One sensor was positioned on the tendon plate behind the quadriceps (iliotibial tract, as used in Xsens MVN [1]) and used as reference sensor. Walking, active and passive knee extensions and muscle contractions without flexion/extension were recorded using one subject. The orientation of each sensor with respect to the reference sensor was calculated. During walking, relative orientations of up to 28.6º were measured (22.4±3.6º). During muscle contractions without flexion/extension the largest relative orientations were measured on the rectus femoris (up to 11.1º) [2]. This pilot showed that the ambulatory measurement of deformation of the upper leg is feasible; however, improving the measurement technology is required. We therefore have designed a new inertial and magnetic sensor system containing smaller sensors, based on the design of an instrumented glove for the assessment of hand kinematics [3]. This new sensor system will then be used to investigate soft-tissue artifacts more accurately; in particular we will focus on in-use estimation and elimination of these artifacts
Temperature compensated digital inertial sensor
A circuit which maintains the inertial element of a gyroscope or accelerometer at a constant position by delivering pulses to a rebalancing motor is discussed. The circuit compensates for temperature changes by using a temperature sensor that varies the threshold of inertial element movement required to generate a rebalance pulse which reacts to changes in viscosity of the flotation fluid. The output of the temperature sensor also varies the output level of the current source to compensate for changes in the strength of the magnets of the rebalancing motor. The sensor also provides a small signal to the rebalance motor to provide a temperature dependent compensation for fixed drift or fixed bias
Integrated Inertial/gps
The presence of failures in navigation sensors can cause the determination of an erroneous aircraft state estimate, which includes position, attitude, and their derivatives. Aircraft flight control systems rely on sensor inputs to determine the aircraft state. In the case of integrated Inertial/NAVSTAR Global Positioning System (GPS), sensor failures could occur in the on-board inertial sensors or in the GPS measurements. The synergistic use of both GPS and the Inertial Navigation System (INS) allows for highly reliable fault detection and isolation of sensor failures. Integrated Inertial/GPS is a promising technology for the High Speed Civil Transport (HSCT) and the return and landing of a manned space vehicle
Ambient health monitoring: the smartphone as a body sensor network component
Inertial measurement units used in commercial body sensor networks (e.g. animation suits) are inefficient, difficult to use and expensive when adapted for movement science applications concerning medical and sports science. However, due to advances in micro-electro mechanical sensors, these inertial sensors have become ubiquitous in mobile computing technologies such as smartphones. Smartphones generally use inertial sensors to enhance the interface usability. This paper investigates the use of a smartphone’s inertial sensing capability as a component in body sensor networks. It discusses several topics centered on inertial sensing: body sensor networks, smartphone networks and a prototype framework for integrating these and other heterogeneous devices. The proposed solution is a smartphone application that gathers, processes and filters sensor data for the purpose of tracking physical activity. All networking functionality is achieved by Skeletrix, a framework for gathering and organizing motion data in online repositories that are conveniently accessible to researchers, healthcare professionals and medical care workers
