Towards a Scalable Dynamic Spatial Database System
With the rise of GPS-enabled smartphones and other similar mobile devices,
massive amounts of location data are available. However, no scalable solutions
for soft real-time spatial queries on large sets of moving objects have yet
emerged. In this paper we explore and measure the limits of actual algorithms
and implementations regarding different application scenarios. And finally we
propose a novel distributed architecture to solve the scalability issues.Comment: (2012
Advanced content-based semantic scene analysis and information retrieval: the SCHEMA project
The aim of the SCHEMA Network of Excellence is to bring together a critical mass of universities, research centers, industrial partners and end users, in order to design a reference system for content-based semantic scene analysis, interpretation and understanding. Relevant research areas include: content-based multimedia analysis and automatic annotation of semantic multimedia content, combined textual and multimedia information retrieval, semantic -web, MPEG-7 and MPEG-21 standards, user interfaces and human factors. In this paper, recent advances in content-based analysis, indexing and retrieval of digital media within the SCHEMA Network are presented. These advances will be integrated in the SCHEMA module-based, expandable reference system
SkyDOT (Sky Database for Objects in the Time Domain): A Virtual Observatory for Variability Studies at LANL
The mining of Virtual Observatories (VOs) is becoming a powerful new method
for discovery in astronomy. Here we report on the development of SkyDOT (Sky
Database for Objects in the Time domain), a new Virtual Observatory, which is
dedicated to the study of sky variability. The site will confederate a number
of massive variability surveys and enable exploration of the time domain in
astronomy. We discuss the architecture of the database and the functionality of
the user interface. An important aspect of SkyDOT is that it is continuously
updated in near real time so that users can access new observations in a timely
manner. The site will also utilize high level machine learning tools that will
allow sophisticated mining of the archive. Another key feature is the real time
data stream provided by RAPTOR (RAPid Telescopes for Optical Response), a new
sky monitoring experiment under construction at Los Alamos National Laboratory
(LANL).Comment: to appear in SPIE proceedings vol. 4846, 11 pages, 5 figure
Low-latency compression of mocap data using learned spatial decorrelation transform
Due to the growing needs of human motion capture (mocap) in movie, video
games, sports, etc., it is highly desired to compress mocap data for efficient
storage and transmission. This paper presents two efficient frameworks for
compressing human mocap data with low latency. The first framework processes
the data in a frame-by-frame manner so that it is ideal for mocap data
streaming and time critical applications. The second one is clip-based and
provides a flexible tradeoff between latency and compression performance. Since
mocap data exhibits some unique spatial characteristics, we propose a very
effective transform, namely learned orthogonal transform (LOT), for reducing
the spatial redundancy. The LOT problem is formulated as minimizing square
error regularized by orthogonality and sparsity and solved via alternating
iteration. We also adopt a predictive coding and temporal DCT for temporal
decorrelation in the frame- and clip-based frameworks, respectively.
Experimental results show that the proposed frameworks can produce higher
compression performance at lower computational cost and latency than the
state-of-the-art methods.Comment: 15 pages, 9 figure
A 2D based Partition Strategy for Solving Ranking under Team Context (RTP)
In this paper, we propose a 2D based partition method for solving the problem
of Ranking under Team Context(RTC) on datasets without a priori. We first map
the data into 2D space using its minimum and maximum value among all
dimensions. Then we construct window queries with consideration of current team
context. Besides, during the query mapping procedure, we can pre-prune some
tuples which are not top ranked ones. This pre-classified step will defer
processing those tuples and can save cost while providing solutions for the
problem. Experiments show that our algorithm performs well especially on large
datasets with correctness
