BYOD: Moving toward a More Mobile and Productive Workforce

    Get PDF
In recent years there has been a personal and organizational trend toward mobility and the use of mobile technologies such as laptops, mobile phones and tablets. With this proliferation of devices, the desire to combine as many functions as possible into one device has also arisen. This concept is commonly called convergence. Generally, device convergence has been segmented between devices for work and devices for home use. Recently, however, the concept of Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) has emerged as organizations attempt to bridge the work/home divide in hopes of increasing employee productivity and reducing corporate technology costs. This paper examines BYOD projects at IBM, Cisco, Citrix, and Intel and then integrates this analysis with current literature to develop and present a BYOD Implementation Success model

Companies which create mobile business solutions require users to adopt them in order to create value for the organization. However, when mobile devices enter the workplace, companies themselves face an adoption process, in having to integrate these devices into the existing IT infrastructure. In this research project, we conducted a focus group with subsequent expert interviews, following a grounded theory approach. We identified seven drivers of mobile business solution adoption in an organizational context: mobile user experience, social influence, time to market, security, workplace flexibility, information availability and process mobilization. While these factors facilitate adoption for some users, they create challenges for or require strategic decisions from other organizational stakeholders, such as internal users, operating departments and corporate IT. The adoption factors and implications for organizational stakeholders were compiled in a conceptual framework

In recent years, the relevance of mobile working has been steadily increasing. New mobile devices (e.g. smartphones) and their innovative functionalities (e.g. mobile applications) enable ubiquitous access to a large amount of data. As a result, the increasing diffusion of smartphones and mobile applications offers new potentials for enterprises. Current mobile devices and related mobile networks have reached a high level of maturity. Therefore, organizational aspects of mobile work become a focal point of interest for enterprises as well as for academics. This research focuses on the communication and information needs of knowledge workers while being “on the road”. In order to evaluate the communication behavior of mobile knowledge workers, the authors collected data of communication and information processes, which were initiated by IT-consultants. The results indicate that communication contexts play a major role for the selection of appropriate media channels

Mobile applications, commonly known as apps, have become a significant line of business for IS commerce. There is an App for that! However, there is a lack of knowledge of what business models prevail in successfully developing and capitalizing an app. This paper aims to investigate prevalent business models. For this purpose, approximately 300 successful apps from the Apple App Store were analysed. Moreover, 10 semi-structured interviews were carried out with app developers who have successfully placed an app within the top charts of the Apple App Store. It is notable that content-driven apps entertaining users in combination with a \u27freemium\u27 or \u27in-app\u27 revenue model dominate the Apple app market. App developers clearly define their target group, specify their market cultivation, and try to avoid free apps

The use of mobile enterprise applications (MEAs) is becoming part of the computing landscape in organizations. To build a strong business case for a MEA project, justifying the financial investment, it is necessary to include realistic benefits to be derived from the use of MEAs. Also, it is equally important to include the possible risks to the benefits being realized so that mitigating actions can be put in place. Then the benefits need to be managed. Yet the benefits from MEAs are not clearly understood. Hence the purpose of this study was to describe the benefits from using MEAs and the impediments to the benefits realization. This was done by analysing qualitative data collected from stakeholders in 3 MEA projects in a single organization in the insurance industry. The practical contribution of the study includes a list of tangible and intangible benefits that can be used to build business cases for MEA projects. Also, the risks that organisations need to manage to realize the expected benefits are described. The academic contribution of this study is the addition to the body of knowledge regarding business cases for and benefits from MEAs. The diffusion of mobile devices rapidly increased in the last decade. Nowadays, smartphones are part of our daily lives, both with respect to private and professional use. This leads to several challenges for enterprises, like the trend to Bring Your Own Device or IT consumerization. IT executives are forced to ensure a high level of security, provide services for employees and support the enterprise productivity. In this context, several software solutions have been introduced to manage the mobile IT, one of which are mobile device management (MDM) systems. However, until now, there is a lack of research concerning possible factors that may influnce the adoption of MDM systems in enterprises. Based on the well-established Technology Organization Environment (TOE) Framework a model for MDM adoption in enterprises is constructed and tested using partial least squares structural equation modelling (PLS-SEM). Data was gathered by means of an online survey, in which 95 IT executives from German enterprises participated. Overall, it could be found that perceived security benefits, costs, firm-size, and the BYOD culture significantly influnce MDM adoption, while regulations, business partners, employees´ innovativeness with IT and the amount of mobile device usage have no significant influnce
