Based on School Based Curriculum (SBC) / KTSP, writing is one of the English language skills that must be taught and learned in Senior High School. SMAN 5 Pekanbaru is a school which uses KTSP as the curriculum in the teaching and learning process. After doing observation in SMAN 5 Pekanbaru, the writer found that the students were difficult in developing a descriptive paragraph. In this case, the teacher was expected to find a good strategy in order to give a contribution to increase the students’ ability in writing a descriptive paragraph by applying praise-question-polish strategy as a replacement of previous strategy or technique. This research consisted of two variables, they were praise-question-polish strategy as variable X, and students’ writing ability as variable Y. The type of this research was an experimental research. The writer used a quasi-experimental design with nonequivalent control group which was intended to find out the effect of using praise-question-polish strategy on students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraphs at the first year of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru. In analyzing the data, the writer used a statistical analysis which used SPSS computer program. It was obtained that tobtainedwas higher thanttable. It means, null hypothesis (H0) was rejected, and alternative hypothesis(Ha) was accepted. It could be stared that 2.022.72. In conclusion, there was a significant effect of using praise-question-polish strategy on students’ ability in writing descriptive paragraph at the first year of SMAN 5 Pekanbaru

Adapting ACME to the database caching environment : a thesis presented in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the degree of Master of Science in Information Systems at Massey University

The field of database cache replacement has seen a great many replacement policies presented in the past few years. As the challenge to find the optimal replacement policy continues, new methods and techniques of determining cache victims have been proposed, with some methods having a greater effect on results than others. Adaptive algorithms attempt to adapt to changing patterns of data access by combining the benefits of other existing algorithms. Such adaptive algorithms have recently been proposed in the web-caching environment. However, there is a lack of such research in the area of database caching. This thesis investigates an attempt to adapt a recently proposed adaptive caching algorithm in the area of web-caching, known as Adaptive Caching with Multiple Experts (ACME), to the database environment. Recently proposed replacement policies are integrated into ACME'S existing policy pool, in an attempt to gauge its ability and robustness to readily incorporate new algorithms. The results suggest that ACME is indeed well-suited to the database environment, and performs as well as the best currently caching policy within its policy pool at any particular point in time in its request stream. Although execution time increases by integrating more policies into ACME, the overall time saved increases by avoiding disk reads due to higher hit rates and fewer misses on the cache

    Six-Letter Connoisseur\u27s Ladders

By the time we reach six-letter words, conditions for superior ladders are much improved: nearly one-half of six-letter words are heterograms (all letters are different), the fraction of isolanos (words which have no neighbours) decreases to less than one-tenth, there is a reasonable number of onalosis (words which have neighbours for each letter change), and each word has on average almost six neighbours (one for each letter). In this article, we therefore only consider ladders in which the terminal words are heterograms, with corresponding letters different, and with letters replaced in order. Even so, there are about fifty thousand of them

SMS Text-Messaging and the Nigerian Christian Context: Constructing Values and Sentiments

The Global System of Mobile Communications (GSM) in Nigeria brought with it a variety of English that is situationally distinct and context sensitive. Thus SMS text-messages are viewed as discourses that presuppose speech events among interlocutors that share a common social behaviour and cultural values. This study shows the extent to which test-messaging constructs Christian values, belief systems and sentiments in Nigeria. Fifty-three (53) text samples collected in Lagos and Ota areas of Southwest Nigeria between 2005 and 2007 are analysed within the framework of computer-mediated discourse analysis (Herring 2001). Result shows that with its peculiar orthographic convention and style, text-messaging has become popular among Christian adherents not just because it is short, cheap and fast but that it is individualistic and fits well into a context where respect for individuals is emphasized. Analysis also shows that SMS text-messaging is used to disseminate messages associated with faith-based pronouncements, prayer and well-wishing, admonition and assurance, appreciation and praise, seasons greetings and general information/announcements. These functions tend to promote love and cooperation among church members. Key words: SMS-text messages, Christian, Discourse Introduction Th

Excerpt: In the last couple of years I have had several encounters with pastors and lay-leaders of Friends meetings who have been overwhelmingly impressed with a particular new hymnal. My interest was further · sparked when I discovered that the committee in search of a hymnal replacement for the meeting at which I serve had adopted this same hymnal as its first choice. Last month we accepted the committee\u27s proposal and adopted Hymns for the Family of God as the new hymnal for our small, rural Indiana meeting. After looking through the hymnal I was so impressed by the variety of the selection, the quality of the type and layout, the innovative format, and the great potential for use that I sought out one of the key members of the editorial board, Bill Gaither, of Alexandria, Indiana, who is so well known in the field of Gospel Music. Having written some 300 songs within the last twenty years, Bill Gaither is likely to be considered the greatest hymnwriter of the \u2770\u27s. He is an authority on Christian music, and it was an honor to interview him concerning the hymnal that he and others worked so hard to produce. The interview went like this

Assessing the Nigerianness of SMS Text-Messages in English

In the history of the English language certain developments have left significant linguistic marks on the language. As new developments and cultural forms occur, new words and styles of expression evolve with them and spread. This is true of the new linguistic style that is associated with the Global System for Mobile Communications (GSM) revolution in Nigeria since 2001. GSM has brought with it a variety of English that is situationally distinctive and context sensitive (Awonusi, 2004:45)
