    Improving Present Security through the Detection of Past Hidden Vulnerable States

    International audienceVulnerability assessment activities usually analyze new security advisories over current running systems. However, a system compromised in the past by a vulnerability unknown at that moment may still constitute a potential security threat in the present. Accordingly, past unknown system exposures are required to be taken into account. We present in this paper a novel approach for increasing the overall security of computing systems by identifying past hidden vulnerable states. In that context, we propose a modeling for detecting unknown past system exposures as well as an OVAL-based distributed framework for autonomously gathering network devices information and automatically analyzing their past security exposure. We also describe an implementation prototype and evaluate its performance through an extensive set of experiments

    Correspondence through email has become a very significant way of communication at workplaces. Information of most kinds such as text, video and audio can be shared through email, the most common being text. With confidential data being easily sharable through this method most companies monitor the emails, thus invading the privacy of employees. To avoid secret information from being disclosed it can be encrypted. Encryption hides the data effectively but this makes the data look important and hence prone to attacks to decrypt the information. It also makes it obvious that there is secret information being transferred. The most effective way would be to make the information seem harmless by concealing the information in the email but not encrypting it. We would like the information to pass through the analyzer without being detected. This project aims to achieve this by “encrypting” plain text by replacing suspicious keywords with non-suspicious English words, trying to keep the grammatical syntax of the sentences intact

    Learning-based Analysis on the Exploitability of Security Vulnerabilities

    The purpose of this thesis is to develop a tool that uses machine learning techniques to make predictions about whether or not a given vulnerability will be exploited. Such a tool could help organizations such as electric utilities to prioritize their security patching operations. Three different models, based on a deep neural network, a random forest, and a support vector machine respectively, are designed and implemented. Training data for these models is compiled from a variety of sources, including the National Vulnerability Database published by NIST and the Exploit Database published by Offensive Security. Extensive experiments are conducted, including testing the accuracy of each model, dynamically training the models on a rolling window of training data, and filtering the training data by various features. Of the chosen models, the deep neural network and the support vector machine show the highest accuracy (approximately 94% and 93%, respectively), and could be developed by future researchers into an effective tool for vulnerability analysis

    Designing and Operating Safe and Secure Transit Systems: Assessing Current Practices in the United States and Abroad, MTI Report 04-05

    Public transit systems around the world have for decades served as a principal venue for terrorist acts. Today, transit security is widely viewed as an important public policy issue and is a high priority at most large transit systems and at smaller systems operating in large metropolitan areas. Research on transit security in the United States has mushroomed since 9/11; this study is part of that new wave of research. This study contributes to our understanding of transit security by (1) reviewing and synthesizing nearly all previously published research on transit terrorism; (2) conducting detailed case studies of transit systems in London, Madrid, New York, Paris, Tokyo, and Washington, D.C.; (3) interviewing federal officials here in the United States responsible for overseeing transit security and transit industry representatives both here and abroad to learn about efforts to coordinate and finance transit security planning; and (4) surveying 113 of the largest transit operators in the United States. Our major findings include: (1) the threat of transit terrorism is probably not universal—most major attacks in the developed world have been on the largest systems in the largest cities; (2) this asymmetry of risk does not square with fiscal politics that seek to spread security funding among many jurisdictions; (3) transit managers are struggling to balance the costs and (uncertain) benefits of increased security against the costs and (certain) benefits of attracting passengers; (4) coordination and cooperation between security and transit agencies is improving, but far from complete; (5) enlisting passengers in surveillance has benefits, but fearful passengers may stop using public transit; (6) the role of crime prevention through environmental design in security planning is waxing; and (7) given the uncertain effectiveness of antitransit terrorism efforts, the most tangible benefits of increased attention to and spending on transit security may be a reduction in transit-related person and property crimes
