Interaction Design, which is essentially story-creating and telling, is at once both and ancient art and a new technology. Media have always effected the telling of stories and the creation of experiences. (Shedroff, N., 1994, p. 2)
Advances with visual representations within broadcast design have been applied to areas such as weather simulations, sporting events, and historical reconstruction's. However, financial market information presentation is fairly uniform in television news broadcasting, showing little progression in pace with other news information categories.
While stock market news segments make limited use of supporting graphics, addi
tional information that may assist the viewer is filtered out, effecting viewers interest, understanding and decision making process often associated with market related stories.
Research to date has been limited to single visualisations. There has been little research into the use of multiple information views that are composed to support news presentations.
People use many different information sources on a daily basis. News sources are used to stay informed about events, to some sources, viewer evaluation of information is a part of that process. News information and other data commodity sources are now more accessible, allowing designers to look at ways of transforming them into new or improved information services.
This research explores the display of stock market information by looking at appropriate media delivery methods combined with Organic Information Interaction Design to enhance information relationships. Organic Design and Information Interaction Design 1 principles are combined. This denotes a 'living' relationship between elements, incorporating hierarchy principles with enhanced information delivery and user experiences. Oral messages improve visual search
Input multimodality combining speech and hand gestures has motivated numerous
usability studies. Contrastingly, issues relating to the design and ergonomic
evaluation of multimodal output messages combining speech with visual
modalities have not yet been addressed extensively. The experimental study
presented here addresses one of these issues. Its aim is to assess the actual
efficiency and usability of oral system messages including brief spatial
information for helping users to locate objects on crowded displays rapidly.
Target presentation mode, scene spatial structure and task difficulty were
chosen as independent variables. Two conditions were defined: the visual target
presentation mode (VP condition) and the multimodal target presentation mode
(MP condition). Each participant carried out two blocks of visual search tasks
(120 tasks per block, and one block per condition). Scene target presentation
mode, scene structure and task difficulty were found to be significant factors.
Multimodal target presentation proved to be more efficient than visual target
presentation. In addition, participants expressed very positive judgments on
multimodal target presentations which were preferred to visual presentations by
a majority of participants. Besides, the contribution of spatial messages to
visual search speed and accuracy was influenced by scene spatial structure and
task difficulty: (i) messages improved search efficiency to a lesser extent for
2D array layouts than for some other symmetrical layouts, although the use of
2D arrays for displaying pictures is currently prevailing; (ii) message
usefulness increased with task difficulty. Most of these results are

The Effect of Multiple Formats on Understanding Complex Visual Displays
Students in introductory science courses frequently have difficulty comprehending complex graphics such as contour maps. Computer-assisted instruction (CAI), because of its ability to convey the same information in different formats, may help students gain necessary graphic interpretation skills. This article describes a research project in which students practiced reading two temperature maps in either a standard black and white contour or a color-enhanced contour format. They were then divided into groups and tested using only standard contour maps. The tests examined comprehension of the distribution of sea surface temperature, oceanographic phosphate concentration, and brain activation. Results suggest that having students practice with differently formatted maps of the same information improves later comprehension of standard contour maps.
