Consensus-based approach to peer-to-peer electricity markets with product differentiation
With the sustained deployment of distributed generation capacities and the
more proactive role of consumers, power systems and their operation are
drifting away from a conventional top-down hierarchical structure. Electricity
market structures, however, have not yet embraced that evolution. Respecting
the high-dimensional, distributed and dynamic nature of modern power systems
would translate to designing peer-to-peer markets or, at least, to using such
an underlying decentralized structure to enable a bottom-up approach to future
electricity markets. A peer-to-peer market structure based on a Multi-Bilateral
Economic Dispatch (MBED) formulation is introduced, allowing for
multi-bilateral trading with product differentiation, for instance based on
consumer preferences. A Relaxed Consensus+Innovation (RCI) approach is
described to solve the MBED in fully decentralized manner. A set of realistic
case studies and their analysis allow us showing that such peer-to-peer market
structures can effectively yield market outcomes that are different from
centralized market structures and optimal in terms of respecting consumers
preferences while maximizing social welfare. Additionally, the RCI solving
approach allows for a fully decentralized market clearing which converges with
a negligible optimality gap, with a limited amount of information being shared.Comment: Accepted for publication in IEEE Transactions on Power System
Beyond Reynolds: A Constraint-Driven Approach to Cluster Flocking
In this paper, we present an original set of flocking rules using an
ecologically-inspired paradigm for control of multi-robot systems. We translate
these rules into a constraint-driven optimal control problem where the agents
minimize energy consumption subject to safety and task constraints. We prove
several properties about the feasible space of the optimal control problem and
show that velocity consensus is an optimal solution. We also motivate the
inclusion of slack variables in constraint-driven problems when the global
state is only partially observable by each agent. Finally, we analyze the case
where the communication topology is fixed and connected, and prove that our
proposed flocking rules achieve velocity consensus.Comment: 6 page
Decentralized dynamic task allocation for UAVs with limited communication range
We present the Limited-range Online Routing Problem (LORP), which involves a
team of Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) with limited communication range that
must autonomously coordinate to service task requests. We first show a general
approach to cast this dynamic problem as a sequence of decentralized task
allocation problems. Then we present two solutions both based on modeling the
allocation task as a Markov Random Field to subsequently assess decisions by
means of the decentralized Max-Sum algorithm. Our first solution assumes
independence between requests, whereas our second solution also considers the
UAVs' workloads. A thorough empirical evaluation shows that our workload-based
solution consistently outperforms current state-of-the-art methods in a wide
range of scenarios, lowering the average service time up to 16%. In the
best-case scenario there is no gap between our decentralized solution and
centralized techniques. In the worst-case scenario we manage to reduce by 25%
the gap between current decentralized and centralized techniques. Thus, our
solution becomes the method of choice for our problem
Rational coordination of crowdsourced resources for geo-temporal request satisfaction
Existing mobile devices roaming around the mobility field should be considered as useful resources in geo-temporal request satisfaction. We refer to the capability of an application to access a physical device at particular geographical locations and times as GeoPresence, and we pre- sume that mobile agents participating in GeoPresence-capable applica- tions should be rational, competitive, and willing to deviate from their routes if given the right incentive. In this paper, we define the Hitch- hiking problem, which is that of finding the optimal assignment of re- quests with specific spatio-temporal characteristics to competitive mobile agents subject to spatio-temporal constraints. We design a mechanism that takes into consideration the rationality of the agents for request sat- isfaction, with an objective to maximize the total profit of the system. We analytically prove the mechanism to be convergent with a profit com- parable to that of a 1/2-approximation greedy algorithm, and evaluate its consideration of rationality experimentally.Supported in part by NSF Grants; #1430145, #1414119, #1347522, #1239021, and #1012798
