Color image segmentation using a self-initializing EM algorithm
This paper presents a new method based on the Expectation-Maximization (EM) algorithm that we apply for color image segmentation. Since this algorithm partitions the data based on an initial set of mixtures, the color segmentation provided by the EM algorithm is highly dependent on the starting condition (initialization stage). Usually the initialization procedure selects the color seeds randomly and often this procedure forces the EM algorithm to converge to numerous local minima and produce inappropriate results. In this paper we propose a simple and yet effective solution to initialize the EM algorithm with relevant color seeds. The resulting self initialised EM algorithm has been included in the development of an adaptive image segmentation scheme that has been applied to a large number of color images. The experimental data indicates that the refined initialization procedure leads to improved color segmentation
A hybrid technique for face detection in color images
In this paper, a hybrid technique for face detection in color images is presented. The proposed technique combines three analysis models, namely skin detection, automatic eye localization, and appearance-based face/nonface classification. Using a robust histogram-based skin detection model, skin-like pixels are first identified in the RGB color space. Based on this, face bounding-boxes are extracted from the image. On detecting a face bounding-box, approximate positions of the candidate mouth feature points are identified using the redness property of image pixels. A region-based eye localization step, based on the detected mouth feature points, is then applied to face bounding-boxes to locate possible eye feature points in the image. Based on the distance between the detected eye feature points, face/non-face classification is performed over a normalized search area using the Bayesian discriminating feature (BDF) analysis method. Some subjective evaluation results are presented on images taken using digital cameras and a Webcam, representing both indoor and outdoor scenes
Automatic recognition of fingerspelled words in British Sign Language
We investigate the problem of recognizing words from
video, fingerspelled using the British Sign Language (BSL)
fingerspelling alphabet. This is a challenging task since the
BSL alphabet involves both hands occluding each other, and
contains signs which are ambiguous from the observer’s
viewpoint. The main contributions of our work include:
(i) recognition based on hand shape alone, not requiring
motion cues; (ii) robust visual features for hand shape
recognition; (iii) scalability to large lexicon recognition
with no re-training.
We report results on a dataset of 1,000 low quality webcam
videos of 100 words. The proposed method achieves a
word recognition accuracy of 98.9%
Model-based learning of local image features for unsupervised texture segmentation
Features that capture well the textural patterns of a certain class of images
are crucial for the performance of texture segmentation methods. The manual
selection of features or designing new ones can be a tedious task. Therefore,
it is desirable to automatically adapt the features to a certain image or class
of images. Typically, this requires a large set of training images with similar
textures and ground truth segmentation. In this work, we propose a framework to
learn features for texture segmentation when no such training data is
available. The cost function for our learning process is constructed to match a
commonly used segmentation model, the piecewise constant Mumford-Shah model.
This means that the features are learned such that they provide an
approximately piecewise constant feature image with a small jump set. Based on
this idea, we develop a two-stage algorithm which first learns suitable
convolutional features and then performs a segmentation. We note that the
features can be learned from a small set of images, from a single image, or
even from image patches. The proposed method achieves a competitive rank in the
Prague texture segmentation benchmark, and it is effective for segmenting
histological images
