    If I Remember Correctly

This portfolio includes original fiction, plays, and creative nonfiction, the best of my work as a creative writing minor at Cedarville University. The two fiction pieces experiment with structure, one through a non-linear form and one through non-conventional dialogue. My one-act play attempts to lyrically combine dialogue and poetry. Six pieces of creative nonfiction, the majority of the portfolio, relate stories directly from life, but the entire collection relies on my own memories – which may or may not be accurate

    You\u27re Still Beautiful

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. I see you sitting there looking out the window, wondering if you\u27ll remember me today. You look at me and stare, and question yourself, Do I know her? I smile and you smile back. I ask how you are, and you whisper, l don\u27t know . . . I guess I am all right. I try to talk to you, but you barely respond. I try to bring up the good memories that I have of us together, but you don\u27t remember any of them, not a single one. You just sit there and smile, and rub my hand. I still don\u27t believe that this could happen to you. I don\u27t know why, and to me, it just looks like you\u27re suffering. I sit there quietly, looking at the other elderly people sitting in the room. I look back at you and tears start to form in my eyes. I think to myself, you\u27re already dead, you don\u27t remember me, you don\u27t remember anything, but you can\u27t help it and it\u27s not your fault

“Failure is Not Acceptable”: The Recollections of a Canadian in French Foreign Legion

I remember the day very well, a cold Tuesday in January 1989, and Pearson International Airport was bustling with travellers. I was amongst them, an inconspicuous 18-year-old middle-class Canadian boarding the plane as if it was a frequent occurrence. A seven-day vacation in France, that was the plan. I often wonder if I had known then what I do now—would I have boarded that plane? The trip lasted five years and it was no vacation, for within 24 hours of boarding the plane, I had become a member of the infamous French Foreign Legion. Life would never be the same again

    Tiffany\u27s

In lieu of an abstract, below is the essay\u27s first paragraph. “The first time I robbed Tiffany’s it was raining. I remember because after I left her house I stopped to check the time when my pocket watch slipped from my hand to the ground. The rain violently splashed over and around the watch as if it was trying to erode the gentle gold backing into something fiercer. I picked up the watch and caught a quick reflection of her house on the back. Even in the gold backing the house looked pale, maybe the rain stole its glitter. Maybe I did.

Imagining, Recognizing and Discriminating: Reconsidering the Ability Hypothesis

    Get PDF
According to the Ability Hypothesis, knowing what it is like to have experience E is just having the ability to imagine or recognize or remember having experience E. I examine various versions of the Ability Hypothesis and point out that they all face serious objections. Then I propose a new version that is not vulnerable to these objections: knowing what it is like to experience E is having the ability todiscriminate imagining or having experience E from imagining or having any other experience. I argue that if we replace the ability to imagine or recognize with the ability to discriminate, the Ability Hypothesis can be salvaged

The Next Level of Understanding CONTENTdm

    Get PDF
Hello everyone and Happy Wednesday once again! As promised from my last blog entry, I come to you with new knowledge about CONTENTdm! If you remember from my previous post, I had learned how to input the metadata in the correct fields and organize the folders to be harvested by CONTENTdm. I could upload these digitized Tipton photos and their accompanying metadata for approval (this is the digitized purgatory I mentioned last time). But one final step that I did not know how to do was take down or delete the old digitized Tipton photos and put up the new digitized Tipton photos with the fronts and backs. This changed this past week when Catherine took the time to demonstrate for me how to complete this process. [excerpt
