    IT Governance And Business Performance - A Resource Based Analysis

    This dissertation project aims at developing a theory-based model that explains the positive impact of IT governance on the business performance of the firm. The research takes the perspective of the resource based view of the firm and integrates the economic theory of complementarities as well as the concept of relatedness. The increase of business performance is rooted in the generation of sustainable competitive advantage. The model is grounded on a thorough literature review and has been developed in eleven exploratory case studies with senior IT executives of major multinational corporations. The results propose that IT governance is positively related to business performance through the mediators IT relatedness and business process relatedness. It is argued that the latter two are complementary in the sense that they do not only increase business performance independently, but provide additional value if available in combination

    A network analysis of IT governance practices : a case study of an IT centralisation project

    Information technology governance (ITG) practices rely on both human and nonhuman actors to support the creation of business value in organisations. The role of nonhuman actors in shaping the ITG practices has been given limited attention within the ITG literature. In proposing a model of ITG, this paper highlights the interplay of human and technological artefacts in shaping the ITG practices. Using a case study approach, this paper explores the relationship and interaction between ITG arrangements and IT infrastructure in an IT centralisation project conducted over a number of years in a university. The analysis from this study highlights how problems in aligning actors&rsquo; interests and lack of appropriate strategies lead to a failure in establishing a stable ITG network.<br /

    Climate change mitigation and adaptation in the land use sector: from complementarity to synergy

    Currently, mitigation and adaptation measures are handled separately, due to differences in priorities for the measures and segregated planning and implementation policies at international and national levels. There is a growing argument that synergistic approaches to adaptation and mitigation could bring substantial benefits at multiple scales in the land use sector. Nonetheless, efforts to implement synergies between adaptation and mitigation measures are rare due to the weak conceptual framing of the approach and constraining policy issues. In this paper, we explore the attributes of synergy and the necessary enabling conditions and discuss, as an example, experience with the Ngitili system in Tanzania that serves both adaptation and mitigation functions. An in-depth look into the current practices suggests that more emphasis is laid on complementarity—i.e., mitigation projects providing adaptation co-benefits and vice versa rather than on synergy. Unlike complementarity, synergy should emphasize functionally sustainable landscape systems in which adaptation and mitigation are optimized as part of multiple functions. We argue that the current practice of seeking co-benefits (complementarity) is a necessary but insufficient step toward addressing synergy. Moving forward from complementarity will require a paradigm shift from current compartmentalization between mitigation and adaptation to systems thinking at landscape scale. However, enabling policy, institutional, and investment conditions need to be developed at global, national, and local levels to achieve synergistic goals

    IT controls in the public cloud : success factors for allocation of roles and responsibilities

    The rapid adoption of cloud computing by organizations has resulted in the transformation of the roles and responsibilities of personnel in managing the information technology (IT) resources (via IT governance controls) that have migrated to the cloud. Hence, the objective of this research is to provide a set of success factors that can assist IT managers to allocate the roles and responsibilities of IT controls appropriately to personnel to manage the migrated IT resources. Accordingly, this study generated a set of success factors from behavioral and information systems (IS) literature. These success factors were validated using in-depth interviews of executives from the United Arab Emirates (UAE), and ranked using Delphi technique. The empirical intervention suggests that the role allocation is driven predominantly by people’s skills, competencies, organizational strategy, structures, and policies. In addition, the research made clear that the most significant competency and skill for a person allocated to IT controls is to be able to evaluate and manage a cloud service provider, especially in terms of risks, compliance, and security issues related to public cloud technology. The findings of this study not only offer new insights for scholars and practitioners involved in assigning responsibilities but also provide extensions for IT governance framework authorities to align their guidelines to the emerging cloud technology
