    ISO/EPC Addressing Methods to Support Supply Chain in the Internet of Things

    RFID systems are among the major infrastructures of the Internet of Things, which follow ISO and EPC standards. In addition, ISO standard constitutes the main layers of supply chain, and many RFID systems benefit from ISO standard for different purposes. In this paper, we tried to introduce addressing systems based on ISO standards, through which the range of things connected to the Internet of Things will grow. Our proposed methods are addressing methods which can be applied to both ISO and EPC standards. The proposed methods are simple, hierarchical, and low cost implementation. In addition, the presented methods enhance interoperability among RFIDs, and also enjoys a high scalability, since it well covers all of EPC schemes and ISO supply chain standards. Further, by benefiting from a new algorithm for long EPCs known as selection algorithm, they can significantly facilitate and accelerate the operation of address mapping.Comment: arXiv admin note: text overlap with arXiv:1807.0217

    An institutional perspective on the diffusion of international management system standards : the case of the Environmental management standard ISO 14001.

    This paper analyzes how national institutional factors affect the adoption of the intemational environmental management standard ISO 14001, using a panel of 139 countries from 1996 to 2006. The analysis emphasizes that during the emerging phase of the standard, the potentiallack of consensus within the constituents of the national institutional environment conceming the value of a new standard could send mixed signals to firrns about the standard. The resuIts show that in the early phase of adoption, regulative and norrnative forces within the institutional environment can work against each other. Results also show that regulative or coercive forces playa relatively more important role in the early phase of adoption of the standard than in the subsequent phases of diffusion. In the later phases of diffusion of ISO 14001, norrnative forces, such as the diffusion of other management standards, as well as factors related to trade, playa more important role. Because of the similarities between environmental management standards and corporate social responsibility standards, this study can help identify sorne of the challenges for diffusion of ISO management standards in the area of social responsibility.Environmental management standard; ISO 14001;

    Interpretation of an international terminology standard in the development of a logic-based compositional terminology

    Purpose: Version 1.0 of the International Classification for Nursing Practice (ICNP®) is a logic-based compositional terminology. International Organization for Standardization (ISO) 18104:2003 Health Informatics¿Integration of a reference terminology model for nursing is an international standard to support the development, testing and implementation of nursing terminologies. Methods: This study examines how ISO 18104:2003 has been interpreted in the development of ICNP® Version 1.0 by identifying mappings between ICNP® and the ISO standard. Representations of diagnostic and interventional statements within ICNP® are also analyzed according to the requirements mandated by the ISO standard. Results: All structural components of ISO 18104:2003 i.e. semantic categories, semantic domains, qualifiers and semantic links are represented either directly or in interpreted form within ICNP®. The formal representations within ICNP® of diagnostic and interventional statements meet the requirement of the ISO standard. Conclusions: The findings of this study demonstrate that ICNP® Version 1.0 conforms to ISO 18104:2003. More importantly perhaps, this study provides practical examples of how components of a terminology standard might be interpreted and it examines how such a standard might be used to support the definition of high-level schemata in developing logic-based compositional terminologies

    Aspects of the Requirements of ISO 15263.4 and the Design and Development of Bicycle Racks

    There is currently interest in developing safety standards for bicycle racks for cars. A draft international standard (ISO 15263.4) has been developed. However, there have been many objections to the proposals and a redraft has been made. This study aims to investigate a part of the standard that involves performing deflection tests on bicycle racks. The research evaluates the deflection tests, considering how representative and repeatable they are. The results are compared to predictions made using FEA software and calculations of stress and deflection. The required deflection tests were performed on a Pendle Bike Rack. The results show that the Pendle TBM 3 rack would pass the deflection test part of the draft ISO 15263.4 standard. It is demonstrated that by measuring strain with strain gauges and calculating the stress, the rack operates within 35% of the ultimate tensile strength of the material. The effectiveness of FEA software is demonstrated by achieving similar results from FEA simulations to the experimental data. The application of FEA is explored, using it to simulate changes to the design of the rack to make it stronger and lighter. The discussion shows that the draft ISO 15263.4 standard needs further development. The draft ISO 15263.4 standard doesn't address issues of fatigue failure, could focus more on ensuring safe use of the product and is more suited to certain types of bicycle rack. In this thesis it is suggested that further drafts of the ISO 16263.4 standard should incorporate different testing schedules for different types of bicycle rack. Tests for racks that are bolted onto a tow ball should differ from tests for racks that strap onto the tailgate

    Conceptual designs for advanced ground transportation systems often hinge on obtaining acceptable vehicle ride quality while attempting to keep the total guideway cost (initial and subsequent maintenance) as low as possible. Two ride quality standards used extensively in work sponsored by the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) are the DOT-Urban Tracked Air Cushion Vehicle (UTACV) standard and the International Standards Organization (ISO) reduced ride comfort criteria. These standards are reviewed and some of the deficiencies, which become apparent when trying to apply them in practice, are noted. Through the use of a digital simulation, the impact of each of these standards on an example design process is examined. It is shown that meeting the ISO specification for the particular vehicle/guideway case investigated is easier than meeting the UTACV standard

    The Impact of the Quality Management System ISO 9000 on Customer Satisfaction of Slovenian Companies

    Many companies invest great efforts into achieving appropriate organization and through it better quality of products and services. They try to achieve this in a systematic way following the standard ISO 9000. Implementing ISO is a management decision that requires consideration of company’s operations, strategy, staff and, most importantly, customers. The theoretical part of the research is focused on literature review. Second part-empirical research has been done on the basis of structured questionnaires gathered from 212 responses of Slovenian companies that had already acquired the ISO 9000 quality standard certificate by 2002. We have posed eight questions about the impact of the ISO 9000 on customer satisfaction. The research results in Slovenian companies confirm the ISO 9000 quality standard’s impact on better satisfying customers’ needs and demands, but not the direct impact on business success. This paper also presents a very useful source of solutions and information for managers and researchers in the field of quality systems and customer satisfaction.
