    Educating the educators: Incorporating bioinformatics into biological science education in Malaysia

    Bioinformatics can be defined as a fusion of computational and biological sciences. The urgency to process and analyse the deluge of data created by proteomics and genomics studies has caused bioinformatics to gain prominence and importance. However, its multidisciplinary nature has created a unique demand for specialist trained in both biology and computing. In this review, we described the components that constitute the bioinformatics field and distinctive education criteria that are required to produce individuals with bioinformatics training. This paper will also provide an introduction and overview of bioinformatics in Malaysia. The existing bioinformatics scenario in Malaysia was surveyed to gauge its advancement and to plan for future bioinformatics education strategies. For comparison, we surveyed methods and strategies used in education by other countries so that lessons can be learnt to further improve the implementation of bioinformatics in Malaysia. It is believed that accurate and sufficient steerage from the academia and industry will enable Malaysia to produce quality bioinformaticians in the future

    Consistent description of leptonic and hadroninc spectra in cosmic rays

    The AMS Collaboration has recently released data on cosmic ray (CR) leptons and hadrons that can shed light on two exciting problems in CR physics: on one side, the origin of the rise of the CR positron fraction above ~10 GeV of energy, on the other side, the nature of the spectral features observed in CR protons and helium at TeV energies. Concerning heavier nuclei, The ATIC-2 experiment has recently reported an puzzling spectral upturn at energy ~50 GeV per nucleon in several primary/primary ratios involving Iron, such as the O/Fe or C/Fe ratio. In this work, the AMS data are described using a two-component scenario, where the total CR flux is provided by a mixture of fluxes accelerated by sources with different properties. Within this picture, the role of secondary CR production inside nearby supernova remnants is discussed. In particular, we present the predictions of our model for the C/Fe and O/Fe ratios, in connection with the spectral anomalies found by the ATIC-2 experiment.Comment: 8 pages, 2 figures - Proceeding of the 34th International Cosmic Ray Conference.     The International Society for Computational Biology (ISCB) presents the Sixteenth International Conference on Intelligent Systems for Molecular Biology (ISMB 2008), to be held in Toronto, Canada, July 19–23, 2008. Now in the final phases of scheduling selected presentations, demonstrations, and posters, the organizers are preparing what will likely be recognized as the premier conference on computational biology in 2008. ISMB 2008 (http://www.iscb.org/ismb2008/) will follow the road paved by the ISMB/ ECCB 2007 (http://www.iscb.org/ ismbeccb2007/) in Vienna in the attempt to specifically encourage increased participation from previously under-represented disciplines of computational biology.     How Special Education Teachers of High School-Aged Students Address Sex Education

    In this qualitative pilot study, five special education teachers of high-school-age students responded to seven research questions regarding how they address sex education, a part of family living from the Health Framework for California Public Schools. The participating special education teachers taught either in special education programs for the emotionally-disturbed(ED) or severely handicapped (SH). An overall identified theme for both groups of teachers was family participation. Other themes were teachers needing to be expert at understanding students learning styles and the need to be an expert at modifying goals for students learning. School nurses can help support and provide accurate information for teachers teaching family living content, as well as be a resource for discussing topics such as helping patients with mv infection or accessing current information regarding sexually-transmitted diseases, and facilitating making the information more real and understandable for special education students. School nurses can also support teachers teaching severely handicapped students by being a resource for information about their student population, in finding visual aids and program development and implementation
