A COMPARISON OF ECONOMIC IMPACT ESTIMATES FOR CHANGES IN THE FEDERAL GRAZING FEE: SECONDARY VS. PRIMARY DATA I/O MODELS
This paper compares estimates of local personal income impacts that could result from increases in the federal grazing fee, using secondary data input/output models (U.S. Forest Service IMPLAN) and five primary data input/output models. The results show that the impacts estimated by the IMPLAN models are usually higher than those estimate by primary data models.Livestock Production/Industries,
Economic Contribution of the Agricultural Sector to the Arkansas Economy in 2012
This report is the ninth in a series of reports examining agriculture’s economic contribution on the Arkansas economy. Utilizing data from the United States Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), USDA Economic Research Service (ERS), USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), and IMPLAN Group, LLC , the economic contribution of agriculture on the Arkansas economy was estimated for the most recent year available, 2012
Economic Contribution of the Agricultural Sector to the Arkansas Economy in 2009
This report is the sixth in a series of reports examining agriculture’s economic contribution on the Arkansas economy. Utilizing data from the United States Bureau of Economic Analysis (BEA), USDA Economic Research Service (ERS), USDA National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS), and Minnesota IMPLAN Group, Inc. (MIG), the economic contribution of agriculture on the Arkansas economy was estimated for the most recent year available, 2009. Gross Domestic Product (GDP) by State information for Arkansas in 2009 was compared with those of other states in the southeast U.S. to give a measure of the relative importance of agriculture in Arkansas.2 The total economic contribution of agriculture (direct, indirect, and induced effects) on value added, employment, and labor income was estimated by employing the Impact Analysis for Planning System (IMPLAN). The economic contributions of agricultural production and processing were estimated for agriculture as a whole and also separately for the Crops Sector, the Animal Agriculture Sector, and the Forestry Sector
Economic Impacts and Implications of Foreign-Born Labor Reductions in Agriculture - Emphasis on Dairy Farms
Giving consideration to the bills and laws being discussed in Congress during the last few years regarding immigration reform, the need has arisen to study the effects of immigrant labor on the dairy industry. The objective of this study is to consider the economic impacts of reducing the availability of immigrant workers in the United States. This analysis utilizes the IMPLAN model, developed and maintained by the Minnesota IMPLAN Group, for analyzing the effects of 20 percent, 50 percent and 100 percent reductions in immigrant labor within the dairy industry. IMPLAN maps the economy using an input/output structure that “describes commodity flows from producers to intermediate and final consumers”. The employment and production data used as inputs into the model were gathered using a national survey of 5,005 dairy farms with respondents from 47 states and a response rate of 41.4 percent. Approximately 50 percent of the 5,005 dairy farms surveyed use immigrant labor. Results of the analysis estimate baseline nationwide economic activity, employment, and total value added impacts attributable to dairy farming to be 19.6 billion, respectively. With a 20 percent reduction in immigrant labor, the values fall to 17.8 billion. Under a 50 percent reduction in immigrant labor the values are 15.1 billion. Under a 100 percent reduction in immigrant labor scenario, the values fall to an estimated 10.5 billion. These reported figures include the impacts directly linked to the dairy industry as well as those to the rest of the economy. This analysis reports both intra- and inter-industry impacts but gives special attention to the inter-industry impacts within the economy.impact analysis, dairy, immigrant labor, Agricultural and Food Policy, International Relations/Trade,
SOME IMPACTS OF ARIZONA DEPARTMENT OF ENVIRONMENTAL QUALITY (ADEQ) ENFORCEMENT IN THE DAIRY INDUSTRY IN MARICOPA COUNTY, ARIZONA
Although water quality is a valid purpose for watershed projects under the PL83-566 Watershed Protection and Flood Prevention Act, historically very few water quality projects have ever been implemented in Arizona. This is largely due to the difficulty in measuring "non-controversial" monetary benefits associated with positive water quality impacts and to policy biased in favor of those projects with a higher monetary benefit-cost ratio. These reasons, among others, has prompted NRCS field economists to seek alternate methods to measure project benefits and costs. While the direct measurement of water quality benefits would be the preferable method to use, IMPLAN, through regional economic impact analysis, provides a way of measuring another category of benefits that can be used in the economic analysis of watershed projects. The key to proper use of IMPLAN is the correct problem definition and accurate modeling of the local economy. The assumptions used in the analysis must be acceptable to the interdisciplinary team and the project sponsors.IMPLAN, Input-Output, watershed analysis, water quality, NRCS, conservation, regional analysis, Environmental Economics and Policy, Resource /Energy Economics and Policy,
EVALUATING THE IMPACTS OF AGRICULTURAL EXPORTS ON A REGIONAL ECONOMY
Agricultural exports are important to many regional economies, as is the case for agricultural exports wither produced in or shipped through Louisiana. A hybrid (revised and verified) IMPLAN model of the Louisiana economy is used to estimate the direct and indirect impact of agricultural exports. Original model estimates of foreign exports lacked holistic (overall) accuracy. However, other, more general uses of the model were unaffected by this lack of accuracy. While the contributions of agricultural exports to the state economy were substantial, impacts were concentrated in unprocessed products. Increasing the export of processed agricultural products should enhance economic activity.Agricultural exports, Holistic accuracy, IMPLAN, Input-output models, Processed exports, Community/Rural/Urban Development, International Relations/Trade,
