Multilevel Converters: An Enabling Technology for High-Power Applications
| Multilevel converters are considered today as the
state-of-the-art power-conversion systems for high-power and
power-quality demanding applications. This paper presents a
tutorial on this technology, covering the operating principle and
the different power circuit topologies, modulation methods,
technical issues and industry applications. Special attention is
given to established technology already found in industry with
more in-depth and self-contained information, while recent
advances and state-of-the-art contributions are addressed with
useful references. This paper serves as an introduction to the
subject for the not-familiarized reader, as well as an update or
reference for academics and practicing engineers working in
the field of industrial and power electronics.Ministerio de Ciencia y TecnologĂa DPI2001-3089Ministerio de EduaciĂłn y Ciencia d TEC2006-0386
Feed-forward Space Vector Modulation for Single-Phase Multilevel Cascade Converters with any DC voltage ratio
Modulation techniques for multilevel converters
can create distorted output voltages and currents if the DC link
voltages are unbalanced. This situation can be avoided if the
instantaneous DC voltage error is not taken into account in the
modulation process. This paper proposes a feed-forward space
vector modulation method for a single-phase multilevel cascade
converter. Using this modulation technique, the modulated output
voltage of the power converter always generates the reference
determined by the controller even in worst case voltage unbalance
conditions. In addition the possibility of optimizing the DC
voltage ratio between the H-bridges of the power converter is
introduced. Experimental results from a 5kVA prototype are
presented in order to validate the proposed modulation technique
Recent advances on recursive filtering and sliding mode design for networked nonlinear stochastic systems: A survey
Copyright © 2013 Jun Hu et al. This is an open access article distributed under the Creative Commons Attribution License, which permits unrestricted use, distribution, and reproduction in any medium, provided the original work is properly cited. Some recent advances on the recursive filtering and sliding mode design problems for nonlinear stochastic systems with network-induced phenomena are surveyed. The network-induced phenomena under consideration mainly include missing measurements, fading measurements, signal quantization, probabilistic sensor delays, sensor saturations, randomly occurring nonlinearities, and randomly occurring uncertainties. With respect to these network-induced phenomena, the developments on filtering and sliding mode design problems are systematically reviewed. In particular, concerning the network-induced phenomena, some recent results on the recursive filtering for time-varying nonlinear stochastic systems and sliding mode design for time-invariant nonlinear stochastic systems are given, respectively. Finally, conclusions are proposed and some potential future research works are pointed out. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grant nos. 61134009, 61329301, 61333012, 61374127 and 11301118, the Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) of the UK under Grant no. A Novel Reduced Components Model Predictive Controlled Multilevel Inverter for Grid-Tied Applications
This paper presents an improved single-phase Multilevel Inverter (MLI) which is conceptualized to reduce power switches along with separate DC voltage sources. Compared with recent modular topologies, the proposed MLI employs a reduced number of components. The proposed inverter consists of a combination of two circuits, i.e., the level generation and polarity generation parts. The level generation part is used to synthesize different output voltage levels, while the polarity inversion is performed by a~conventional H-bridge circuit. The performance of the proposed topology has been studied using s single-phase seven-level inverter, which utilizes seven power switches and three independent DC voltage sources. Model Predictive Control (MPC) is applied to inject a sinusoidal current into the utility grid which exhibits low Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Tests, including a~change in grid current amplitude as well as operation under variation in Power Factor (PF), have been performed to validate the good performance obtained using MPC. The effectiveness of the proposed seven-level inverter has been verified theoretically using MATLAB Simulink. In addition, Real-Time (RT) validation using the dSPACE-CP1103 has been performed to confirm the system performance and system operation using digital platforms. Simulation and RT results show improved THD at 1.23% of injected current
Characterization of Acoustic Resonance in a High Pressure Sodium Lamp
With the last decades, the high pressure sodium (HPS) lamp has been supplied in high frequency in order to increase the efficacy of the lamp/ballast system. However, at some given frequencies, standing acoustic waves, namely acoustic resonance (AR), might develop in the burner and cause lamp luminous fluctuation, extinction and destruction in the most serious case. As we seek for a control method to detect and avoid the lamp AR some main characteristics of the acoustic resonances in a 150W HPS lamp are presented in this paper,. The first one is the characteristic of the lamp AR threshold power, the second one is the differences between forward and backward frequency scanning effects during lamp open loop operation. Thirdly, lamp AR behaviour in closed loop operation with an LCC half bridge inverter will be presented and leads to a new point of view and a change in the choice of the AR detection method. These characteristics allow us to further understand the AR and to better control the lamp
Analysis of the power balance In the cells of a multilevel cascaded H-Bridge converter
Multilevel cascaded H-Bridge converters (CHB)
have been presented as a good solution for high power applications.
In this way, several control and modulation techniques
have been proposed for this power converter topology. In this
paper the steady state power balance in the cells of the single
phase two cell CHB is studied. The capability to be supplied with
active power from the grid or to deliver active power to the grid
in each cell is analyzed according to the dc-link voltages and
the desired ac output voltage value. Limits of the maximum and
minimum input active power for stable operation of the CHB are
addressed. Simulation results are shown to validate the presented
analysis

This paper is concerned with the overview of the recent progress in fuzzy-logic-based filtering, control, and fault detection problems. First, the network technologies are introduced, the networked control systems are categorized from the aspects of fieldbuses and industrial Ethernets, the necessity of utilizing the fuzzy logic is justified, and the network-induced phenomena are discussed. Then, the fuzzy logic control strategies are reviewed in great detail. Special attention is given to the thorough examination on the latest results for fuzzy PID control, fuzzy adaptive control, and fuzzy tracking control problems. Furthermore, recent advances
on the fuzzy-logic-based filtering and fault detection problems are reviewed. Finally, conclusions are given and some possible future research directions are pointed out, for example, topics on two-dimensional networked systems, wireless networked control systems, Quality-of-Service (QoS) of networked systems, and fuzzy access control in open networked systems. This work was supported in part by the National Natural Science Foundation of China under Grants 61329301,
