Computer-aided diagnosis in clinical endoscopy using neuro-fuzzy systems

    Get PDF
In this paper, an innovative detection system to support medical diagnosis and detection of abnormal lesions by processing endoscopic images is presented. The images used in this study have been obtained using the new M2A Swallowable Imaging Capsule - a patented, video colourimaging disposable capsule. Schemes have been developed to extract new texture features from the texture spectra in the hromatic and achromatic domains for a selected region of nterest from each colour component histogram of endoscopic images. The implementation of an advanced fuzzy inference neural network which combines fuzzy systems and artificial neural networks and the concept of fusion of multiple classifiers dedicated to specific feature parameters have been also adopted in this paper. The detection accuracy of the proposed system has reached to loo%, providing thus an indication that such intelligent schemes could be used as a supplementary diagnostic tool in endoscopy

Construction of Fuzzy Signature from Data: An Example of SARS Pre-clinical Diagnosis System

    Get PDF
There are many areas where objects with very complex and sometimes interdependent features are to be classified; similarities and dissimilarities are to be evaluated. This makes a complex decision model difficult to construct effectively. Fuzzy signatures are introduced to handle complex structured data and interdependent feature problems. Fuzzy signatures can also used in cases where data is missing. This paper presents the concept of a fuzzy signature and how its flexibility can be used to quickly construct a medical pre-clinical diagnosis system. A Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) pre-clinical diagnosis system using fuzzy signatures is constructed as an example to show many advantages of the fuzzy signature. With the use of this fuzzy signature structure, complex decision models in the medical field should be able to be constructed more effectively

    Painting algorithms for fuzzy classification

    Get PDF
Absfruct-Land cover analysis by means of remotely sensing images quite often suggest the existence of fuzzy classes, where no clear borders or particular shapes appear. In this paper we present an image classification aid algorithm which shows as its main output a processed image where each pixel is being colored according to the degree of similitude to their respective surrounding pixels. Such a processed image is therefore suggesting possible classes, to be implemented in a more sophisticated image classification process. A key underlying argument for this approach is the relevance of painting techniques in order to help decision makers to understand complex information relative to fuzzy image classification

Fuzzy Modeling of Thermoplastic Composites' Melt Volume Rate

    Get PDF
Melt volume-flow rate (MVR) is one of the most important quality indicators of composite materials, which depends on the proportion of the component materials. This paper reports the development of a low complexity fuzzy model that describes the relation between percentage amount of multiwall carbon nanotube (MWCNT), acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS), polycarbonate (PC) and MVR of the resulting composite. The rule base was generated from a sample data set obtained from experiments by the rule base extension using default set shapes (RBE-DSS) method, and the applied fuzzy inference technique was the least squares method based fuzzy rule interpolation (LESFRI). The resulting model was validated against a separate test data set as well, and it was compared to a fuzzy model generated by a traditional commercial software tool

A Comparison of Type-1 and Type-2 Fuzzy Logic Controllers in Robotics: A review

    Get PDF
Most real world applications face high levels of uncertainties that can affect the operations of such applications. Hence, there is a need to develop different approaches that can handle the available uncertainties and reduce their effects on the given application. To date, Type-1 Fuzzy Logic Controllers (FLCs) have been applied with great success to many different real world applications. The traditional type-1 FLC which uses crisp type-1 fuzzy sets cannot handle high levels of uncertainties appropriately. Nevertheless it has been shown that a type-2 FLC using type-2 fuzzy sets can handle such uncertainties better and thus produce a better performance. As such, type-2 FLCs are considered to have the potential to overcome the limitations of type-1 FLCs and produce a new generation of fuzzy controllers with improved performance for many applications which require handling high levels of uncertainty. This paper will briefly introduce the interval type-2 FLC and its benefits. We will also present briefly some of the type-2 FLC real world applications

Harvesting-aware energy management for environmental monitoring WSN

    Get PDF
Wireless sensor networks can be used to collect data in remote locations, especially when energy harvesting is used to extend the lifetime of individual nodes. However, in order to use the collected energy most effectively, its consumption must be managed. In this work, forecasts of diurnal solar energies were made based on measurements of atmospheric pressure. These forecasts were used as part of an adaptive duty cycling scheme for node level energy management. This management was realized with a fuzzy logic controller that has been tuned using differential evolution. Controllers were created using one and two days of energy forecasts, then simulated in software. These controllers outperformed a human-created reference controller by taking more measurements while using less reserve energy during the simulated period. The energy forecasts were comparable to other available methods, while the method of tuning the fuzzy controller improved overall node performance. The combination of the two is a promising method of energy management.Web of Science105art. no. 60

Genetic learning of accurate and compact fuzzy rule based systems based on the 2-tuples linguistic representation

    Get PDF
One of the problems that focus the research in the linguistic fuzzy modeling area is the trade-off between interpretability and accuracy. To deal with this problem, different approaches can be found in the literature. Recently, a new linguistic rule representation model was presented to perform a genetic lateral tuning of membership functions. It is based on the linguistic 2-tuples representation that allows the lateral displacement of a label considering an unique parameter. This way to work involves a reduction of the search space that eases the derivation of optimal models and therefore, improves the mentioned trade-off. Based on the 2-tuples rule representation, this work proposes a new method to obtain linguistic fuzzy systems by means of an evolutionary learning of the data base a priori (number of labels and lateral displacements) and a simple rule generation method to quickly learn the associated rule base. Since this rule generation method is run from each data base definition generated by the evolutionary algorithm, its selection is an important aspect. In this work, we also propose two new ad hoc data-driven rule generation methods, analyzing the influence of them and other rule generation methods in the proposed learning approach. The developed algorithms will be tested considering two different real-world problems.Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology under Projects TIC-2002-04036-C05-01 and TIN-2005-08386-C05-0
