    Reorganize your blogs: Supporting blog re-visitation with natural language processing and visualization

    Temporally-connected personal blogs contain voluminous textual content, presenting challenges in re-visiting and reflecting on experiences. Other data repositories have benefited from natural language processing (NLP) and interactive visualizations (VIS) to support exploration, but little is known about how these techniques could be used with blogs to present experiences and support multimodal interaction with blogs, particularly for authors. This paper presents the effect of reorganization—reorganizing the large blog set with NLP and presenting abstract topics with VIS—to support novel re-visitation experiences to blogs. The BlogCloud tool, a blog re-visitation tool that reorganizes blog paragraphs around user-searched keywords, implements reorganization and similarity-based content grouping. Through a public use session with bloggers who wrote about extended hikes, we observed the effect of NLP-based reorganization in delivering novel re-visitation experiences. Findings suggest that the re-presented topics provide new reflection materials and re-visitation paths, enabling interaction with symbolic items in memory

    This dissertation discusses how interdisciplinary UX teams can consider culturally sensitive design elements during the UX design process. It contributes a state-of-the-art meta review on UX evaluation methods, two software tool artifacts for cross-functional UX teams, and empirical insights in the differing usage behaviors of a website plug-in of French, German and Italian users, website design preferences of Vietnamese and German users, as well as learnings from a field trip that focused on studying privacy and personalization in Mumbai, India. Finally, based on these empirical insights, this work introduces the concept culturally sensitive design that goes beyond traditional cross-cultural design considerations in HCI that do not compare different approaches to consider culturally sensitive product aspects in user research

    Establishing Awareness through Pointing Gestures during Collaborative Decision-Making in a Wall-Display Environment

    Sharing a physical environment, such as that of a wall-display, facilitates gaining awareness of others' actions and intentions, thereby bringing benefits for collaboration. Previous studies have provided first insights on awareness in the context of tabletops or smaller vertical displays. This paper seeks to advance the current understanding on how users share awareness information in wall-display environments and focusses on mid-air pointing gestures as a foundational part of communication. We present a scenario dealing with the organization of medical supply chains in crisis situations, and report on the results of a user study with 24 users, split into 6 groups of 4, performing several tasks. We investigate pointing gestures and identify three subtypes used as awareness cues during face-to-face collaboration: narrative pointing, loose pointing, and sharp pointing. Our observations show that reliance on gesture subtypes varies across participants and groups, and that sometimes vague pointing is sufficient to support verbal negotiations.Comment: \c{opyright} Authors | ACM 2023.     Integration of 3D Scanning and Augmented Reality (AR) Technology in East Kalimantan Furniture Products in E-Commerce

    The creative furniture industry in East Kalimantan faces the challenge of less effective online marketing in e-commerce. In 2018, there were more than 370 furniture entrepreneurs in the region, but only 37% of their total production managed to reach the market. According to projections from Markets and Markets, the market value of Augmented Reality (AR) in e-commerce is expected to grow by 34% between 2020 and 2025. To overcome this problem, the use of 3D object configuration visual technology and AR presents a better solution. promising solution. This technology can improve product presentation, create a more interactive and realistic shopping experience, and reduce the environmental impact of e-commerce due to the re-shipment of non-conforming products. The main objective of the research is to assess the effectiveness of product communication, the ease of the purchasing process, and the level of consumer trust in the product. This visual method of 3D object configuration combines 3D scanning to produce detailed and realistic 3D images. This research uses a sprint design method based on design thinking, which involves co-creation to refine ideas. Next, a prototype design was developed with a focus on aspects of the user interface and user experience, fostering intelligent interaction between users and their environment, thus contributing to the progress of the Smart City concept in IKN Nusantara

    Subjective Usability, Mental Workload Assessments and Their Impact on Objective Human Performance

    Self-reporting procedures and inspection methods have been largely employed in the fields of interaction and web-design for assessing the usability of interfaces. However, there seems to be a propensity to ignore features related to end-users or the context of application during the usability assessment procedure. This research proposes the adoption of the construct of mental workload as an additional aid to inform interaction and web-design. A user-study has been performed in the context of human-web interaction. The main objective was to explore the relationship between the perception of usability of the interfaces of three popular web-sites and the mental workload imposed on end-users by a set of typical tasks executed over them. Usability scores computed employing the System Usability Scale were compared and related to the mental workload scores obtained employing the NASA Task Load Index and the Workload Profile self-reporting assessment procedures. Findings advise that perception of usability and subjective assessment of mental workload are two independent, not fully overlapping constructs. They measure two different aspects of the human-system interaction. This distinction enabled the demonstration of how these two constructs cab be jointly employed to better explain objective performance of end-users, a dimension of user experience, and informing interaction and web-design
