    Dynamically reconfigurable management of energy, performance, and accuracy applied to digital signal, image, and video Processing Applications

    There is strong interest in the development of dynamically reconfigurable systems that can meet real-time constraints in energy/power-performance-accuracy (EPA/PPA). In this dissertation, I introduce a framework for implementing dynamically reconfigurable digital signal, image, and video processing systems. The basic idea is to first generate a collection of Pareto-optimal realizations in the EPA/PPA space. Dynamic EPA/PPA management is then achieved by selecting the Pareto-optimal implementations that can meet the real-time constraints. The systems are then demonstrated using Dynamic Partial Reconfiguration (DPR) and dynamic frequency control on FPGAs. The framework is demonstrated on: i) a dynamic pixel processor, ii) a dynamically reconfigurable 1-D digital filtering architecture, and iii) a dynamically reconfigurable 2-D separable digital filtering system. Efficient implementations of the pixel processor are based on the use of look-up tables and local-multiplexes to minimize FPGA resources. For the pixel-processor, different realizations are generated based on the number of input bits, the number of cores, the number of output bits, and the frequency of operation. For each parameters combination, there is a different pixel-processor realization. Pareto-optimal realizations are selected based on measurements of energy per frame, PSNR accuracy, and performance in terms of frames per second. Dynamic EPA/PPA management is demonstrated for a sequential list of real-time constraints by selecting optimal realizations and implementing using DPR and dynamic frequency control. Efficient FPGA implementations for the 1-D and 2-D FIR filters are based on the use a distributed arithmetic technique. Different realizations are generated by varying the number of coefficients, coefficient bitwidth, and output bitwidth. Pareto-optimal realizations are selected in the EPA space. Dynamic EPA management is demonstrated on the application of real-time EPA constraints on a digital video. The results suggest that the general framework can be applied to a variety of digital signal, image, and video processing systems. It is based on the use of offline-processing that is used to determine the Pareto-optimal realizations. Real-time constraints are met by selecting Pareto-optimal realizations pre-loaded in memory that are then implemented efficiently using DPR and/or dynamic frequency control

    Architectural Solutions for NanoMagnet Logic

    The successful era of CMOS technology is coming to an end. The limit on minimum fabrication dimensions of transistors and the increasing leakage power hinder the technological scaling that has characterized the last decades. In several different ways, this problem has been addressed changing the architectures implemented in CMOS, adopting parallel processors and thus increasing the throughput at the same operating frequency. However, architectural alternatives cannot be the definitive answer to a continuous increase in performance dictated by Moore’s law. This problem must be addressed from a technological point of view. Several alternative technologies that could substitute CMOS in next years are currently under study. Among them, magnetic technologies such as NanoMagnet Logic (NML) are interesting because they do not dissipate any leakage power. More- over, magnets have memory capability, so it is possible to merge logic and memory in the same device. However, magnetic circuits, and NML in this specific research, have also some important drawbacks that need to be addressed: first, the circuit clock frequency is limited to 100 MHz, to avoid errors in data propagation; second, there is a connection between circuit layout and timing, and in particular, longer wires will have longer latency. These drawbacks are intrinsic to the technology and for this reason they cannot be avoided. The only chance is to limit their impact from an architectural point of view. The first step followed in the research path of this thesis is indeed the choice and optimization of architectures able to deal with the problems of NML. Systolic Ar- rays are identified as an ideal solution for this technology, because they are regular structures with local interconnections that limit the long latency of wires; more- over they are composed of several Processing Elements that work in parallel, thus exploit parallelization to increase throughput (limiting the impact of the low clock frequency). Through the analysis of Systolic Arrays for NML, several possible im- provements have been identified and addressed: 1) it has been defined a rigorous way to increase throughput with interleaving, providing equations that allow to esti- mate the number of operations to be interleaved and the rules to provide inputs; 2) a latency insensitive circuit has been designed, that exploits a data communication protocol between processing elements to avoid data synchronization problems. This feature has been exploited to design a latency insensitive Systolic Array that is able to execute the Floyd-Steinberg dithering algorithm. All the improvements presented in this framework apply to Systolic Arrays implemented in any technology. So, they can also be exploited to increase performance of today’s CMOS parallel circuits. This research path is presented in Chapter 3. While Systolic Arrays are an interesting solution for NML, their usage could be quite limited because they are normally application-specific. The second re- search path addresses this problem. A Reconfigurable Systolic Array is presented, that can be programmed to execute several algorithms. This architecture has been tested implementing many algorithms, including FIR and IIR filters, Discrete Cosine Transform and Matrix Multiplication. This research path is presented in Chapter 4. In common Von Neumann architectures, the logic part of the circuit and the memory one are separated. Today bus communication between logic and memory represents the bottleneck of the system. This problem is addressed presenting Logic- In-Memory (LIM), an architecture where memory elements are merged in logic ones. This research path aims at defining a real LIM architectures. This has been done in two steps. The first step is represented by an architecture composed of three layers: memory, routing and logic. In the second step instead the routing plane is no more present, and its features are inherited by the memory plane. In this solution, a pyramidal memory model is used, where memories near logic elements contain the most probably used data, and other memory layers contain the remaining data and instruction set. This circuit has been tested with odd-even sort algorithms and it has been benchmarked against GPUs and ASIC. This research path is presented in Chapter 5. MagnetoElastic NML (ME-NML) is a technological improvement of the NML principle, proposed by researchers of Politecnico di Torino, where the clock system is based on the induced stretch of a piezoelectric substrate when a voltage is ap- plied to its boundaries. The main advantage of this solution is that it consumes much less power than the classic clock implementation. This technology has not yet been investigated from an architectural point of view and considering complex circuits. In this research field, a standard methodology for the design of ME-NML circuits has been proposed. It is based on a Standard Cell Library and an enhanced VHDL model. The effectiveness of this methodology has been proved designing a Galois Field Multiplier. Moreover the serial-parallel trade-off in ME-NML has been investigated, designing three different solutions for the Multiply and Accumulate structure. This research path is presented in Chapter 6. While ME-NML is an extremely interesting technology, it needs to be combined with other faster technologies to have a real competitive system. Signal interfaces between NML and other technologies (mainly CMOS) have been rarely presented in literature. A mixed-technology multiplexer is designed and presented as the basis for a CMOS to NML interface. The reverse interface (from ME-NML to CMOS) is instead based on a sensing circuit for the Faraday effect: a change in the polarization of a magnet induces an electric field that can be used to generate an input signal for a CMOS circuit. This research path is presented in Chapter 7. The research work presented in this thesis represents a fundamental milestone in the path towards nanotechnologies. The most important achievement is the de- sign and simulation of complex circuits with NML, benchmarking this technology with real application examples. The characterization of a technology considering complex functions is a major step to be performed and that has not yet been ad- dressed in literature for NML. Indeed, only in this way it is possible to intercept in advance any weakness of NanoMagnet Logic that cannot be discovered consid- ering only small circuits. Moreover, the architectural improvements introduced in this thesis, although technology-driven, can be actually applied to any technology. We have demonstrated the advantages that can derive applying them to CMOS cir- cuits. This thesis represents therefore a major step in two directions: the first is the enhancement of NML technology; the second is a general improvement of parallel architectures and the development of the new Logic-In-Memory paradigm

    Software-Driven and Virtualized Architectures for Scalable 5G Networks

    In this dissertation, we argue that it is essential to rearchitect 4G cellular core networks–sitting between the Internet and the radio access network–to meet the scalability, performance, and flexibility requirements of 5G networks. Today, there is a growing consensus among operators and research community that software-defined networking (SDN), network function virtualization (NFV), and mobile edge computing (MEC) paradigms will be the key ingredients of the next-generation cellular networks. Motivated by these trends, we design and optimize three core network architectures, SoftMoW, SoftBox, and SkyCore, for different network scales, objectives, and conditions. SoftMoW provides global control over nationwide core networks with the ultimate goal of enabling new routing and mobility optimizations. SoftBox attempts to enhance policy enforcement in statewide core networks to enable low-latency, signaling-efficient, and customized services for mobile devices. Sky- Core is aimed at realizing a compact core network for citywide UAV-based radio networks that are going to serve first responders in the future. Network slicing techniques make it possible to deploy these solutions on the same infrastructure in parallel. To better support mobility and provide verifiable security, these architectures can use an addressing scheme that separates network locations and identities with self-certifying, flat and non-aggregatable address components.     Performance Investigation of Digital Lowpass IIR Filter Based on Different Platforms

    The work presented in this paper illuminates the design and simulation of a recursive or Infinite Impulse Response (IIR) filter. The proposed design algorithm employs the Genetic Algorithm to determine the filter coefficients to satisfy the required performance. The effectiveness of different platforms on filter design and performance has been studied in this paper. Three different platforms are considered to implement and verify the designed filter’s work through simulation. The first platform is the MATLAB/SIMULINK software package used to implement the Biquad form filter. This technique is the basis for the software implementation of the designed IIR filter. The HDL – Cosimulation technique is considered the second one; it inspired to take advantage of the existing tools in SIMULINK to convert the designed filter algorithm to the Very high-speed integrated circuit Hardware Description Language (VHDL) format. The System Generator is employed as the third technique, in which the designed filter is implemented as a hardware structure based on basic unit blocks provided by Xilinx System Generator. This technique facilitates the implementation of the designed filter in the FPGA target device. Simulation results show that the performance of the designed filter is remarkably reliable even with severe noise levels

    FPGA acceleration of sequence analysis tools in bioinformatics

    Thesis (Ph.D.)--Boston UniversityWith advances in biotechnology and computing power, biological data are being produced at an exceptional rate. The purpose of this study is to analyze the application of FPGAs to accelerate high impact production biosequence analysis tools. Compared with other alternatives, FPGAs offer huge compute power, lower power consumption, and reasonable flexibility. BLAST has become the de facto standard in bioinformatic approximate string matching and so its acceleration is of fundamental importance. It is a complex highly-optimized system, consisting of tens of thousands of lines of code and a large number of heuristics. Our idea is to emulate the main phases of its algorithm on FPGA. Utilizing our FPGA engine, we quickly reduce the size of the database to a small fraction, and then use the original code to process the query. Using a standard FPGA-based system, we achieved 12x speedup over a highly optimized multithread reference code. Multiple Sequence Alignment (MSA)--the extension of pairwise Sequence Alignment to multiple Sequences--is critical to solve many biological problems. Previous attempts to accelerate Clustal-W, the most commonly used MSA code, have directly mapped a portion of the code to the FPGA. We use a new approach: we apply prefiltering of the kind commonly used in BLAST to perform the initial all-pairs alignments. This results in a speedup of from 8Ox to 190x over the CPU code (8 cores). The quality is comparable to the original according to a commonly used benchmark suite evaluated with respect to multiple distance metrics. The challenge in FPGA-based acceleration is finding a suitable application mapping. Unfortunately many software heuristics do not fall into this category and so other methods must be applied. One is restructuring: an entirely new algorithm is applied. Another is to analyze application utilization and develop accuracy/performance tradeoffs. Using our prefiltering approach and novel FPGA programming models we have achieved significant speedup over reference programs. We have applied approximation, seeding, and filtering to this end. The bulk of this study is to introduce the pros and cons of these acceleration models for biosequence analysis tools

    Cross-Layer Design of Highly Scalable and Energy-Efficient AI Accelerator Systems Using Photonic Integrated Circuits

    Artificial Intelligence (AI) has experienced remarkable success in recent years, solving complex computational problems across various domains, including computer vision, natural language processing, and pattern recognition. Much of this success can be attributed to the advancements in deep learning algorithms and models, particularly Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs). In recent times, deep ANNs have achieved unprecedented levels of accuracy, surpassing human capabilities in some cases. However, these deep ANN models come at a significant computational cost, with billions to trillions of parameters. Recent trends indicate that the number of parameters per ANN model will continue to grow exponentially in the foreseeable future. To meet the escalating computational demands of ANN models, the hardware accelerators used for processing ANNs must offer lower latency and higher energy efficiency. Unfortunately, traditional electronic implementations of ANN hardware accelerators, including CPUs, Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), Application-Specific Integrated Circuits (ASICs), and Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs), have fallen short of meeting the latency and energy efficiency requirements for processing deep ANN models. Furthermore, the interconnection network subsystems in these electronic accelerator systems, designed to facilitate large-scale data transfers between processing cores and memory/control units within the accelerator systems, have become bottlenecks that hinder the throughput, latency, and energy efficiency of deep ANN model processing. Fortunately, Photonic Integrated Circuits (PICs)-based accelerator systems, featuring photonic network subsystems are promising alternatives to conventional electronic accelerators. PIC-based accelerator systems operate in the optical domain, delivering processing at the speed of light with ultra-low latency, minimal dynamic energy consumption, and high throughput. These advantages stem from the wavelength division multiplexing capabilities and the absence of distance-dependent impedance in PICs. Furthermore, these characteristics enable the implementation of high-performance photonic network subsystems within PIC-based accelerator systems. Additionally, PIC-based accelerator systems offer inherent optical nonlinearities. Despite these numerous advantages over electronic accelerators, PIC-based systems still encounter several challenges due to limited optical power budget, susceptibility to crosstalk and other sources of noise caused by the analog operation, high area consumption, and restricted functional flexibility of PICs. These challenges manifest in various ways. (i) The existence of a significant trade-off between the achievable processing core size and the supported bit precision that impedes the scalability of processing cores. (ii) The limited reconfigurability, in terms of supported computing size and precision, makes them less adaptable to modern ANN models with diverse computational and precision demands. (iii) The reliance on electronic adder networks for accumulation diminishes the latency and energy consumption benefits of PIC-based accelerator systems due to frequent analog-to-digital conversions and memory accesses involved in accumulations. My research has contributed several solutions that overcome a multitude of these challenges and improve the throughput, energy efficiency, and flexibility of PIC-based AI accelerator systems. I identified and analyzed factors that affect the scalability and reconfigurability of PIC-based AI accelerator systems. I proposed several novel PIC-based accelerator architectures with enhancements at the circuit level, architecture level, and system level to improve scalability, reconfigurability, and functional flexibility. At the circuit level, these enhancements serve to decrease optical signal losses, reduce control complexity, enable adaptability for various ANN processing tasks, and lower power and area consumption. The architecture-level improvements mitigate crosstalk noise, facilitate functional reconfigurability, enable in-situ and flexible spatio-temporal accumulation, and provide flexible support for different dataflows. The system-level enhancements involve the integration of stochastic computing with PIC-based accelerators to break the inherent trade-off between scalability and supported bit precision. Additionally, applying stochastic computing enhances the flexibility of PIC-based accelerators, allowing them to support mixed-precision ANN models. These cross-layer enhancements collectively contribute to the design of PIC-based AI accelerator systems, resulting in improved throughput, energy efficiency, scalability, and reconfigurability
