Macroscopic modeling and simulations of room evacuation
We analyze numerically two macroscopic models of crowd dynamics: the
classical Hughes model and the second order model being an extension to
pedestrian motion of the Payne-Whitham vehicular traffic model. The desired
direction of motion is determined by solving an eikonal equation with density
dependent running cost, which results in minimization of the travel time and
avoidance of congested areas. We apply a mixed finite volume-finite element
method to solve the problems and present error analysis for the eikonal solver,
gradient computation and the second order model yielding a first order
convergence. We show that Hughes' model is incapable of reproducing complex
crowd dynamics such as stop-and-go waves and clogging at bottlenecks. Finally,
using the second order model, we study numerically the evacuation of
pedestrians from a room through a narrow exit.Comment: 22 page
Key challenges in agent-based modelling for geo-spatial simulation
Agent-based modelling (ABM) is fast becoming the dominant paradigm in social simulation due primarily to a worldview that suggests that complex systems emerge from the bottom-up, are highly decentralised, and are composed of a multitude of heterogeneous objects called agents. These agents act with some purpose and their interaction, usually through time and space, generates emergent order, often at higher levels than those at which such agents operate. ABM however raises as many challenges as it seeks to resolve. It is the purpose of this paper to catalogue these challenges and to illustrate them using three somewhat different agent-based models applied to city systems. The seven challenges we pose involve: the purpose for which the model is built, the extent to which the model is rooted in independent theory, the extent to which the model can be replicated, the ways the model might be verified, calibrated and validated, the way model dynamics are represented in terms of agent interactions, the extent to which the model is operational, and the way the model can be communicated and shared with others. Once catalogued, we then illustrate these challenges with a pedestrian model for emergency evacuation in central London, a hypothetical model of residential segregation tuned to London data which elaborates the standard Schelling (1971) model, and an agent-based residential location built according to spatial interactions principles, calibrated to trip data for Greater London. The ambiguities posed by this new style of modelling are drawn out as conclusions
Modeling Environmental Operative Elements in Agent-Based Pedestrian Simulation
Models for pedestrian simulation are employed on a day-to-day basis for supporting the design and planning of the built environment in normal and evacuation situations. One of the aspects that are least investigated in the community, probably because it is considered closer to technology transfer than to research, is the modelling of operational elements of the simulated environment. The present paper briefly describes an agent-based approach to the representation of operative elements of the environment with particular attention to the mechanisms of interaction between these active objects and pedestrians
Pedestrians moving in dark: Balancing measures and playing games on lattices
We present two conceptually new modeling approaches aimed at describing the
motion of pedestrians in obscured corridors:
* a Becker-D\"{o}ring-type dynamics
* a probabilistic cellular automaton model.
In both models the group formation is affected by a threshold. The
pedestrians are supposed to have very limited knowledge about their current
position and their neighborhood; they can form groups up to a certain size and
they can leave them. Their main goal is to find the exit of the corridor.
Although being of mathematically different character, the discussion of both
models shows that it seems to be a disadvantage for the individual to adhere to
larger groups. We illustrate this effect numerically by solving both model
systems. Finally we list some of our main open questions and conjectures
Exitus: An Agent-Based Evacuation Simulation Model For Heterogeneous Populations
Evacuation planning for private-sector organizations is an important consideration given the continuing occurrence of both natural and human-caused disasters that inordinately affect them. Unfortunately, the traditional management approach that is focused on fire drills presents several practical challenges at the scale required for many organizations but especially those responsible for national critical infrastructure assets such as airports and sports arenas. In this research we developed Exitus, a comprehensive decision support system that may be used to simulate large-scale evacuations of such structures. The system is unique because it considers individuals with disabilities explicitly in terms of physical and psychological attributes. It is also capable of classifying the environment in terms of accessibility characteristics encompassing various conditions that have been shown to have a disproportionate effect upon the behavior of individuals with disabilities during an emergency. The system was applied to three unique test beds: a multi-story office building, an international airport, and a major sports arena. Several simulation experiments revealed specific areas of concern for both building managers and management practice in general. In particular, we were able to show (a) how long evacuations of heterogeneous populations may be expected to last, (b) who the most vulnerable groups of people are, (c) the risk engendered from particular design features for individuals with disabilities, and (d) the potential benefits from adopting alternate evacuation strategies, among others. Considered together, the findings provide a useful foundation for the development of best practices and policies addressing the evacuation concerns surrounding heterogeneous populations in large, complex environments. Ultimately, a capabilities based approach featuring both tactical and strategic planning with an eye toward the unique problems presented by individuals with disabilities is recommended
