Cannabis and Its Historical Role in America’s Intentional Segregation of Race

One of the more dramatic shifts in attitudes towards a particular trend or culture we have seen during the turn of the century is none other than attitudes towards marijuana. The Cannabis plant, commonly known as marijuana, has been illegal in the United States for a while now. In the past ten years, we have seen an influx of states and countries relaxing their attitudes towards marijuana, and it\u27s potential benefits. While this shift in attitude towards a relatively harmless drug is a step in the right direction, many are unaware of the sinister and racist history behind outlawing the plant in the first place that we still see today

The Cyclical Nature of Moral Entrepreneurship.

The primary focus of this study was to determine how moral entrepreneurs were able to convince the American public to support their anti-drug crusades. The methodology section consisted of information gathered from primary and secondary sources, and described why these sources were used. Harry Anslinger and Richard Nixon were used as models to demonstrate how a cycle of moral entrepreneurship existed throughout the twentieth century. By testing for a cycle of moral entrepreneurship through content analysis of various sources, including descriptive statistics, the same pattern was identified as dominating Reagan\u27s and Bush\u27s anti-drug rhetoric. Lastly, possible limitations of the study and any implications that the study may have for the reader were discussed

US moral panics, Mexican politics, and the borderlands origins of the war on drugs

During the 1950s Californian civil society advocates and politicians developed a moral panic over youth narcotic use. One of the key elements of this moral panic was the assertion that most drugs came over the border and that the only solution to this problem was blackmailing Mexico through temporary closure of the border. The idea not only became a tenet of later drug policy, but also, in conjunction with pressure from Mexico’s own moral reformers, forced regional politicians in Mexico to enact periodic clean up campaigns

President Richard Nixon initiated the modern war on drugs after being influenced by his keen interest in foreign policy and foreign influences on American society. Phases of hysteria preceded Nixon's drug war and led to development of anti-drug legislation and a global policy to control international narcotics trafficking. Nixon's drug war strategy changed over time and was mainly a three pronged all-out offensive consisting of international supply reduction, law enforcement, and drug abuse and treatment program

This paper will examine different features related to the history and legal aspects of cannabis (Marijuana) and identify the challenges facing the United States with legalization of marijuana. A wide range of reliable sources and studies were conducted to provide the information. The history of marijuana has been presented in many influences, and settings throughout its existence. The benefits of marijuana have been used for thousands of years for medicinal purposes with no legalities noted until the 1930’s. Problems facing the use of marijuana have mainly been defaced by false propaganda throughout its life span. Also examined are suggestions to allow the use and distribution of marijuana and why it should be legalized in all fifty states, and U.S territories. The evidence introduced in this paper substantiates that marijuana should be legalized for the financial stability that is needed to stabilize a nation that has spent billions of dollars to fight the war on crimes, when in essence; legalizing this drug could save the United States even more financially
