Building real-time embedded applications on QduinoMC: a web-connected 3D printer case study
Single Board Computers (SBCs) are now emerging
with multiple cores, ADCs, GPIOs, PWM channels, integrated
graphics, and several serial bus interfaces. The low power
consumption, small form factor and I/O interface capabilities of
SBCs with sensors and actuators makes them ideal in embedded
and real-time applications. However, most SBCs run non-realtime
operating systems based on Linux and Windows, and do
not provide a user-friendly API for application development. This
paper presents QduinoMC, a multicore extension to the popular
Arduino programming environment, which runs on the Quest
real-time operating system. QduinoMC is an extension of our earlier
single-core, real-time, multithreaded Qduino API. We show
the utility of QduinoMC by applying it to a specific application: a
web-connected 3D printer. This differs from existing 3D printers,
which run relatively simple firmware and lack operating system
support to spool multiple jobs, or interoperate with other devices
(e.g., in a print farm). We show how QduinoMC empowers devices with the capabilities to run new services without impacting their timing guarantees. The Design of a System Architecture for Mobile Multimedia Computers
This chapter discusses the system architecture of a portable computer, called Mobile Digital Companion, which provides support for handling multimedia applications energy efficiently. Because battery life is limited and battery weight is an important factor for the size and the weight of the Mobile Digital Companion, energy management plays a crucial role in the architecture. As the Companion must remain usable in a variety of environments, it has to be flexible and adaptable to various operating conditions. The Mobile Digital Companion has an unconventional architecture that saves energy by using system decomposition at different levels of the architecture and exploits locality of reference with dedicated, optimised modules. The approach is based on dedicated functionality and the extensive use of energy reduction techniques at all levels of system design. The system has an architecture with a general-purpose processor accompanied by a set of heterogeneous autonomous programmable modules, each providing an energy efficient implementation of dedicated tasks. A reconfigurable internal communication network switch exploits locality of reference and eliminates wasteful data copies
MARACAS: a real-time multicore VCPU scheduling framework
This paper describes a multicore scheduling and load-balancing framework called MARACAS, to address shared cache and memory bus contention. It builds upon prior work centered around the concept of virtual CPU (VCPU) scheduling. Threads are associated with VCPUs that have periodically replenished time budgets. VCPUs are guaranteed to receive their periodic budgets even if they are migrated between cores. A load balancing algorithm ensures VCPUs are mapped to cores to fairly distribute surplus CPU cycles, after ensuring VCPU timing guarantees. MARACAS uses surplus cycles to throttle the execution of threads running on specific cores when memory contention exceeds a certain threshold. This enables threads on other cores to make better progress without interference from co-runners. Our scheduling framework features a novel memory-aware scheduling approach that uses performance counters to derive an average memory request latency. We show that latency-based memory throttling is more effective than rate-based memory access control in reducing bus contention. MARACAS also supports cache-aware scheduling and migration using page recoloring to improve performance isolation amongst VCPUs. Scheduling of Early Quantum Tasks
An Early Quantum Task (EQT) is a Quantum EDF task that has shrunk its first period into one quantum time slot. Its purpose is to be executed as soon as possible, without causing deadline overflow of other tasks. We will derive the conditions under which an EQT can be admitted and can have an immediate start. The advantage of scheduling EQTs is shown by its use in a buffered multi-media server. The EQT is associated with a multimedia stream and it will use its first invocation to fill the buffer, such that a client can start receiving data immediately
QoS in the Linux operating system
This document describes the implementation of our QoS
architecture, which has been developed in the context of our
UNIQuE project. In order to achieve an end-to-end quality of
service, our approach bases on feedback loops. Therefore, the
basis is an adaptive CPU scheduler, which is a key element in
our QoS architecture. We used the Linux Operating System
(version 2.3.49 as the QoS architecture requires

Handling Overload Conditions in Real-Time Systems
This chapter deals with the problem of handling overload conditions, that is, those critical situations in which the computational demand requested by the application exceeds the processor capacity. If not properly handled, an overload can cause an abrupt performance degradation, or even a system crash. Therefore, a real-time system should be designed to anticipate and tolerate unexpected overload situations through speciïŹc kernel mechanisms
DIGITIZATION OF HISTORICAL INFORMATION AT THE NATIONAL ARCHIVES OF ZAMBIA: CRITICAL STRATEGIC REVIEW
The paper reviews the digitization project carried out at the National Archives of Zambia. The patrimony of the National Archives of Zambia is immense and of unquestionable historical relevance. However, it has suffered both from a lack of exposure and from an outdated system of record keeping and consultation. While not many interested parties were able to access materials directly, those who did contributed unwittingly to their gradual destruction: combined with other external agents, physical consultation can be greatly detrimental. This paper reveals that the objectives of the project were to safeguard and ensure the preservation of the most valuable and perishable components of the archival patrimony of the National Archives of Zambia; to render them more accessible and facilitate their future use by a broader number of researchers and interested parties; to enable a select group of staff of the National Archives of Zambia to gain theoretical knowledge and practical experience in electronic records management and website design; and to enhance the national and international visibility of the National Archives of Zambia by increasing awareness of its holdings. The paper discusses the activities that were undertaken to achieve each objective and the contribution made by external players, and concludes by assessing the challenges posed by the project, the experience gained and lessons learnt
Integrated Support for Handoff Management and Context-Awareness in Heterogeneous Wireless Networks
The overwhelming success of mobile devices and wireless
communications is stressing the need for the development of
mobility-aware services. Device mobility requires services
adapting their behavior to sudden context changes and being
aware of handoffs, which introduce unpredictable delays and
intermittent discontinuities. Heterogeneity of wireless
technologies (Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, 3G) complicates the situation,
since a different treatment of context-awareness and handoffs is
required for each solution. This paper presents a middleware
architecture designed to ease mobility-aware service
development. The architecture hides technology-specific
mechanisms and offers a set of facilities for context awareness
and handoff management. The architecture prototype works with
Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, which today represent two of the most
widespread wireless technologies. In addition, the paper discusses
motivations and design details in the challenging context of
mobile multimedia streaming applications
