    Unital hyperarchimedean vector lattices

    Get PDF
We prove that the category of unital hyperarchimedean vector lattices is equivalent to the category of Boolean algebras. The key result needed to establish the equivalence is that, via the Yosida representation, such a vector lattice is naturally isomorphic to the vector lattice of all locally constant real-valued continuous functions on a Boolean (=compact Hausdorff totally disconnected) space. We give two applications of our main result.Comment: 15 pages. Submitted pape

The period-index problem for real surfaces

We study when the period and the index of a class in the Brauer group of the function field of a real algebraic surface coincide. We prove that it is always the case if the surface has no real points (more generally, if the class vanishes in restriction to the real points of the locus where it is well-defined), and give a necessary and sufficient condition for unramified classes. As an application, we show that the u-invariant of the function field of a real algebraic surface is equal to 4, answering questions of Lang and Pfister. Our strategy relies on a new Hodge-theoretic approach to de Jong's period-index theorem on complex surfaces.Comment: 39 pages, minor modification

    Group action on Polish spaces

In this paper we investigate the action of Polish groups (not necessary abelian) on an uncountable Polish spaces. We consider two main situations. First, when the orbits given by group action are small and the second when the family of orbits are at most countable. We have found some subgroups which are not measurable with respect to a given σ\sigma-ideals on the group and the action on some subsets gives a completely nonmeasurable sets with respect to some σ\sigma-ideals with a Borel base on the Polish space. In most cases the general results are consistent with ZFC theory and are strictly connected with cardinal coefficients. We give some suitable examples, namely the subgroup of isometries of the Cantor space where the orbits are suffitiently small. In a opposite case we give an example of the group of the homeomorphisms of a Polish space in which there is a large orbit and we have found the subgroup without Baire property and a subset of the mentioned space such that the action of this subgroup on this set is completely nonmeasurable set with respect to the σ\sigma-ideal of the subsets of first category.Comment: 9 page
