    An intrusion detection system against malicious attacks on the communication network of driverless cars

    Vehicular ad hoc networking (VANET) have become a significant technology in the current years because of the emerging generation of self-driving cars such as Google driverless cars. VANET have more vulnerabilities compared to other networks such as wired networks, because these networks are an autonomous collection of mobile vehicles and there is no fixed security infrastructure, no high dynamic topology and the open wireless medium makes them more vulnerable to attacks. It is important to design new approaches and mechanisms to rise the security these networks and protect them from attacks. In this paper, we design an intrusion detection mechanism for the VANETs using Artificial Neural Networks (ANNs) to detect Denial of Service (DoS) attacks. The main role of IDS is to detect the attack using a data generated from the network behavior such as a trace file. The IDSs use the features extracted from the trace file as auditable data.     Intelligent Intrusion Detection of Grey Hole and Rushing Attacks in Self-Driving Vehicular Networks

    Vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) play a vital role in the success of self-driving and semi self-driving vehicles, where they improve safety and comfort. Such vehicles depend heavily on external communication with the surrounding environment via data control and Cooperative Awareness Messages (CAMs) exchanges. VANETs are potentially exposed to a number of attacks, such as grey hole, black hole, wormhole and rushing attacks. This work presents an intelligent Intrusion Detection System (IDS) that relies on anomaly detection to protect the external communication system from grey hole and rushing attacks. These attacks aim to disrupt the transmission between vehicles and roadside units. The IDS uses features obtained from a trace file generated in a network simulator and consists of a feed-forward neural network and a support vector machine. Additionally, the paper studies the use of a novel systematic response, employed to protect the vehicle when it encounters malicious behaviour. Our simulations of the proposed detection system show that the proposed schemes possess outstanding detection rates with a reduction in false alarms. This safe mode response system has been evaluated using four performance metrics, namely, received packets, packet delivery ratio, dropped packets and the average end to end delay, under both normal and abnormal conditions

    An intelligent intrusion detection system for external communications in autonomous vehicles

    Advancements in computing, electronics and mechanical systems have resulted in the creation of a new class of vehicles called autonomous vehicles. These vehicles function using sensory input with an on-board computation system. Self-driving vehicles use an ad hoc vehicular network called VANET. The network has ad hoc infrastructure with mobile vehicles that communicate through open wireless channels. This thesis studies the design and implementation of a novel intelligent intrusion detection system which secures the external communication of self-driving vehicles. This thesis makes the following four contributions: It proposes a hybrid intrusion detection system to protect the external communication in self-driving vehicles from potential attacks. This has been achieved using fuzzification and artificial intelligence. The second contribution is the incorporation of the Integrated Circuit Metrics (ICMetrics) for improved security and privacy. By using the ICMetrics, specific device features have been used to create a unique identity for vehicles. Our work is based on using the bias in on board sensory systems to create ICMetrics for self-driving vehicles. The incorporation of fuzzy petri net in autonomous vehicles is the third contribution of the thesis. Simulation results show that the scheme can successfully detect denial-of-service attacks. The design of a clustering based hierarchical detection system has also been presented to detect worm hole and Sybil attacks. The final contribution of this research is an integrated intrusion detection system which detects various attacks by using a central database in BusNet. The proposed schemes have been simulated using the data extracted from trace files. Simulation results have been compared and studied for high levels of detection capability and performance. Analysis shows that the proposed schemes provide high detection rate with a low rate of false alarm.     HYBRIST Mobility Model- A Novel Hybrid Mobility Model for VANET Simulations

    Simulations play a vital role in implementing, testing and validating proposed algorithms and protocols in VANET. Mobility model, defined as the movement pattern of vehicles, is one of the main factors that contribute towards the efficient implementation of VANET algorithms and protocols. Using near reality mobility models ensure that accurate results are obtained from simulations. Mobility models that have been proposed and used to implement and test VANET protocols and algorithms are either the urban mobility model or highway mobility model. Algorithms and protocols implemented using urban or highway mobility models may not produce accurate results in hybrid mobility models without enhancement due to the vast differences in mobility patterns. It is on this score the Hybrist, a novel hybrid mobility model is proposed. The realistic mobility pattern trace file of the proposed Hybrist hybrid mobility model can be imported to VANET simulators such as Veins and network simulators such as ns2 and Qualnet to simulate VANET algorithms and protocols
