Timelike minimal Lagrangian surfaces in the indefinite complex hyperbolic two-space

    Get PDF
It has been known for some time that there exist 55 essentially different real forms of the complex affine Kac-Moody algebra of type A2(2)A_2^{(2)} and that one can associate 44 of these real forms with certain classes of "integrable surfaces", such as minimal Lagrangian surfaces in CP2\mathbb {CP}^2 and CH2\mathbb {CH}^2, as well as definite and indefinite affine spheres in R3\mathbb R^3. In this paper we consider the class of timelike minimal Lagrangian surfaces in the indefinite complex hyperbolic two-space CH12\mathbb{CH}^2_1. We show that this class of surfaces corresponds to the fifth real form. Moreover, for each timelike Lagrangian surface in CH12\mathbb {CH}^2_1 we define natural Gauss maps into certain homogeneous spaces and prove a Ruh-Vilms type theorem, characterizing timelike minimal Lagrangian surfaces among all timelike Lagrangian surfaces in terms of the harmonicity of these Gauss maps.Comment: Typological errors have been fixe

    Genus Two Modular Bootstrap

We study the Virasoro conformal block decomposition of the genus two partition function of a two-dimensional CFT by expanding around a Z3-invariant Riemann surface that is a three-fold cover of the Riemann sphere branched at four points, and explore constraints from genus two modular invariance and unitarity. In particular, we find 'critical surfaces' that constrain the structure constants of a CFT beyond what is accessible via the crossing equation on the sphere.Comment: 23 pages, 6 figures. v2: updated references, typos corrected. v3-v5: minor typos correcte

Hemagglutinin-based polyanhydride nanovaccines against H5N1 influenza elicit protective virus neutralizing titers and cell-mediated immunity

H5N1 avian influenza is a significant global concern with the potential to become the next pandemic threat. Recombinant subunit vaccines are an attractive alternative for pandemic vaccines compared to traditional vaccine technologies. In particular, polyanhydride nanoparticles encapsulating subunit proteins have been shown to enhance humoral and cell-mediated immunity and provide protection upon lethal challenge. In this work, a recombinant H5 hemagglutinin trimer (H53) was produced and encapsulated into polyanhydride nanoparticles. The studies performed indicated that the recombinant H53 antigen was a robust immunogen. Immunizing mice with H53 encapsulated into polyanhydride nanoparticles induced high neutralizing antibody titers and enhanced CD4+ T cell recall responses in mice. Finally, the H53-based polyanhydride nanovaccine induced protective immunity against a low-pathogenic H5N1 viral challenge. Informatics analyses indicated that mice receiving the nanovaccine formulations and subsequently challenged with virus were similar to naïve mice that were not challenged. The current studies provide a basis to further exploit the advantages of polyanhydride nanovaccines in pandemic scenarios

The Discovery of a Twelfth Wolf-Rayet Star in the Small Magellanic Cloud

We report the discovery of a relatively faint (V=15.5) early-type WN star in the SMC. The line strength and width of He II lambda 4686 emission is similar to that of the other SMC WNs, and the presense of N V lambda 4603,19 emission (coupled with the lack of N III) suggests this star is of spectral type WN3-4.5, and thus is similar in type to the other SMC WRs. Also like the other SMC WN stars, an early-type absorption spectrum is weakly present. The absolute magnitude is comparable to that of other (single) Galactic early-type WNs. The star is located in the Hodge 53 OB association, which is also the home of two other SMC WNs. This star, which we designate SMC-WR12, was actually detected at a high significance level in an earlier interference-filter survey, but the wrong star was observed as part of a spectroscopic followup, and this case of mistaken identity resulted in its Wolf-Rayet nature not being recognized until now.Comment: Accepted by PASP (November 2003 issue

Deepr: A Convolutional Net for Medical Records

Feature engineering remains a major bottleneck when creating predictive systems from electronic medical records. At present, an important missing element is detecting predictive regular clinical motifs from irregular episodic records. We present Deepr (short for Deep record), a new end-to-end deep learning system that learns to extract features from medical records and predicts future risk automatically. Deepr transforms a record into a sequence of discrete elements separated by coded time gaps and hospital transfers. On top of the sequence is a convolutional neural net that detects and combines predictive local clinical motifs to stratify the risk. Deepr permits transparent inspection and visualization of its inner working. We validate Deepr on hospital data to predict unplanned readmission after discharge. Deepr achieves superior accuracy compared to traditional techniques, detects meaningful clinical motifs, and uncovers the underlying structure of the disease and intervention space

Six-loop anomalous dimension of twist-two operators in planar N=4 SYM theory

    Get PDF
We compute the general form of the six-loop anomalous dimension of twist-two operators with arbitrary spin in planar N=4 SYM theory. First we find the contribution from the asymptotic Bethe ansatz. Then we reconstruct the wrapping terms from the first 35 even spin values of the full six-loop anomalous dimension computed using the quantum spectral curve approach. The obtained anomalous dimension satisfies all known constraints coming from the BFKL equation, the generalised double-logarithmic equation, and the small spin expansion.Comment: 33 pages, 4 ancillary files, minor change

VLA H92 Alpha and H53 Alpha Radio Recombination Line Observations of M82

We present high angular resolution (0.6'') observations made with the VLA of the radio continuum at 8.3 and 43 GHz as well as H92 Alpha and H53 Alpha radio recombination lines from the nearby (3 Mpc) starburst galaxy M82. In the continuum we report 19 newly identified sources at 8.3 GHz and 5 at 43 GHz that were unknown previously. The spatial distribution of the H92 Alpha line is inhomogeneous; we identify 27 features. The line and continuum emission are modeled using a collection of HII regions at different distances from the nucleus assuming a single-density component and two-density components. The high-density component has a density of 4 X 10^{4} cm^{-3}. However, the bulk of the ionization is in regions with densities which are typically a factor 10 lower. The gas kinematics, using the H92 Alpha line, confirms the presence of steep velocity gradient (26 km s^{-1} arcsec^{-1}) in the nuclear region. As this steep gradient is observed not only on the major axis but also at large distances along a band of PA of 150 degrees, the interpretation in terms of x2 orbits elongated along the minor axis of the bar, which would be observed at an angle close to the inclination of the main disk, seems inadequate. Ad-hoc radial motions must be introduced to reproduce the pattern of the velocity field. Different families of orbits are indicated as we detect a signature in the kinematics at the transition between the two plateaus observed in the NIR light distribution. The H92 Alpha line also reveals the base of the outflow where the injection towards the halo on the Northern side occurs. The kinematical pattern suggests a connection between the gas flowing in the plane of M82 towards the center; this behavior most likely originates due to the presence of a bar and the outflow out of the plane.Comment: 45 pages, 11 figures and 6 tables.
