The Latin Music Database
In this paper we present the Latin Music Database, a novel database of Latin musical recordings which has been developed for automatic music genre classification, but can also be used in other music information retrieval tasks. The method for assigning genres to the musical recordings is based on human expert perception and therefore capture their tacit knowledge in the genre labeling process. We also present the ethnomusicology of the genres available in the database as it might provide important information for the analysis of the results of any experiment that employs the database
Affective Music Information Retrieval
Much of the appeal of music lies in its power to convey emotions/moods and to
evoke them in listeners. In consequence, the past decade witnessed a growing
interest in modeling emotions from musical signals in the music information
retrieval (MIR) community. In this article, we present a novel generative
approach to music emotion modeling, with a specific focus on the
valence-arousal (VA) dimension model of emotion. The presented generative
model, called \emph{acoustic emotion Gaussians} (AEG), better accounts for the
subjectivity of emotion perception by the use of probability distributions.
Specifically, it learns from the emotion annotations of multiple subjects a
Gaussian mixture model in the VA space with prior constraints on the
corresponding acoustic features of the training music pieces. Such a
computational framework is technically sound, capable of learning in an online
fashion, and thus applicable to a variety of applications, including
user-independent (general) and user-dependent (personalized) emotion
recognition and emotion-based music retrieval. We report evaluations of the
aforementioned applications of AEG on a larger-scale emotion-annotated corpora,
AMG1608, to demonstrate the effectiveness of AEG and to showcase how
evaluations are conducted for research on emotion-based MIR. Directions of

Neurophysiological Assessment of Affective Experience
In the field of Affective Computing the affective experience (AX) of the user during the interaction with computers is of great interest. The automatic recognition of the affective state, or emotion, of the user is one of the big challenges. In this proposal I focus on the affect recognition via physiological and neurophysiological signals. Longâstanding evidence from psychophysiological research and more recently from research in affective neuroscience suggests that both, body and brain physiology, are able to indicate the current affective state of a subject. However, regarding the classification of AX several questions are still unanswered. The principal possibility of AX classification was repeatedly shown, but its generalisation over different task contexts, elicitating stimuli modalities, subjects or time is seldom addressed. In this proposal I will discuss a possible agenda for the further exploration of physiological and neurophysiological correlates of AX over different elicitation modalities and task contexts
BigEAR: Inferring the Ambient and Emotional Correlates from Smartphone-based Acoustic Big Data
This paper presents a novel BigEAR big data framework that employs
psychological audio processing chain (PAPC) to process smartphone-based
acoustic big data collected when the user performs social conversations in
naturalistic scenarios. The overarching goal of BigEAR is to identify moods of
the wearer from various activities such as laughing, singing, crying, arguing,
and sighing. These annotations are based on ground truth relevant for
psychologists who intend to monitor/infer the social context of individuals
coping with breast cancer. We pursued a case study on couples coping with
breast cancer to know how the conversations affect emotional and social well
being. In the state-of-the-art methods, psychologists and their team have to
hear the audio recordings for making these inferences by subjective evaluations
that not only are time-consuming and costly, but also demand manual data coding
for thousands of audio files. The BigEAR framework automates the audio
analysis. We computed the accuracy of BigEAR with respect to the ground truth
obtained from a human rater. Our approach yielded overall average accuracy of

Learning to rank music tracks using triplet loss
Most music streaming services rely on automatic recommendation algorithms to
exploit their large music catalogs. These algorithms aim at retrieving a ranked
list of music tracks based on their similarity with a target music track. In
this work, we propose a method for direct recommendation based on the audio
content without explicitly tagging the music tracks. To that aim, we propose
several strategies to perform triplet mining from ranked lists. We train a
Convolutional Neural Network to learn the similarity via triplet loss. These
different strategies are compared and validated on a large-scale experiment
against an auto-tagging based approach. The results obtained highlight the
efficiency of our system, especially when associated with an Auto-pooling
layer
Deep Learning and Music Adversaries
OA Monitor ExerciseOA Monitor ExerciseAn {\em adversary} is essentially an algorithm intent on making a classification system perform in some particular way given an input, e.g., increase the probability of a false negative. Recent work builds adversaries for deep learning systems applied to image object recognition, which exploits the parameters of the system to find the minimal perturbation of the input image such that the network misclassifies it with high confidence. We adapt this approach to construct and deploy an adversary of deep learning systems applied to music content analysis. In our case, however, the input to the systems is magnitude spectral frames, which requires special care in order to produce valid input audio signals from network-derived perturbations. For two different train-test partitionings of two benchmark datasets, and two different deep architectures, we find that this adversary is very effective in defeating the resulting systems. We find the convolutional networks are more robust, however, compared with systems based on a majority vote over individually classified audio frames. Furthermore, we integrate the adversary into the training of new deep systems, but do not find that this improves their resilience against the same adversary
