AUTOMATIC VOICE QUALITY ENHANCEMENT WHILE PEOPLE WEARING FACMASK DURING A CALL

    Get PDF
In the post pandemic when more and more people getting back to office, it would be still recommended to wear facemask when meet in person face to face or join a meeting together in an enclosed meeting room. When people wearing facemask to join a meeting, most of the case it would be difficult for remote participants to understand very well what people is talking if there is no special deal in the device used for the call, especially a conferencing device. The idea is to disclose a method to compensate voice quality automatically while wearing facemask by using Audio Weaver design tool

Role of the first coordination shell in determining the equilibrium structure and dynamics of simple liquids

    Get PDF
The traditional view that the physical properties of a simple liquid are determined primarily by its repulsive forces was recently challenged by Berthier and Tarjus, who showed that in some cases ignoring the attractions leads to large errors in the dynamics [L. Berthier and G. Tarjus, Phys. Rev. Lett. 103, 170601 (2009); J. Chem. Phys. 134, 214503 (2011)]. We present simulations of the standard Lennard-Jones liquid at several condensed-fluid state points, including a fairly low density state and a very high density state, as well as simulations of the Kob-Andersen binary Lennard-Jones mixture at several temperatures. By varying the range of the forces, results for the thermodynamics, dynamics, and structure show that the determining factor for getting the correct statics and dynamics is not whether or not the attractive forces {\it per se} are included in the simulations. What matters is whether or not interactions are included from all particles within the first coordination shell (FCS) - the attractive forces can thus be ignored, but only at extremely high densities. The recognition of the importance of a local shell in condensed fluids goes back to van der Waals; our results confirm this idea and thereby the basic picture of the old hole- and cell theories for simple condensed fluids

Letter Written by Katherine Trickey to Her Folks Dated October 8, 1945

[Transcription begins] Mon. 8 Oct 1945 Dear Folks, It is quiet in the office this morning partly due to the fact that there is plenty of help again. I have two new girls to break in – Ida Copley who has been with me about 2 weeks and – Lenhart who has been here about 2 days. It is confusing teaching them but we can get the work done now. – It is good to be up-to-date again. We are in the process of changes, bosses again, Capt Smith has transferred to the Officers Section and we will have a Major Huen as boss, I believe, when he arrives. So I’m not doing much in the way of getting ready to pack the stuff up for storage until I find out how he wants to do it – Every officer has such individual ideas always. Marjorie Crockett made Staff Sergeant Saturday which made me very happy – She has always been so conscious of the fact that she was lower rank than I. She has a new job which she likes and is very pleased to get the rating before she leaves the WAC. It makes her feel that her work was at last appreciated. She plans now to get out when I do and we’ll spend a few days perhaps in New York together on the way home. – We’d both like to see a little more of the country before going back to Maine!!! If only it were spring or summer, we’d try for a trip to California on furlough rates – but December doesn’t seem a very good time to make a long trip like that. I have seen two good pictures this week-end – Sat night – we went to see “The House on 92nd Street” - It is an FBI picture which is authentic and very worth seeing. It showed the file room at the FBI. – Sure hope I never have to work there!!! Last night we saw Pat O’Brien & Ellen Drew in “Man Alive” – which was a crazy comedy that the title gives no idea about. It was so crazy but very funny situations. Marj and I took blankets and went out in the woods and stayed all yesterday afternoon. The weather was perfect – the bugs have gone and it was really comfortable. My sunburn is all over thank goodness. It was pretty uncomfortable for about a week. Time for dinner Love Kay [Transcription ends

Otsus plus: the debate over enhanced special autonomy for Papua

    Get PDF
The report explores how a controversial proposal in Indonesia to amend a 2001 law on special autonomy, that until mid-November seemed to be getting nowhere, was suddenly transformed into a detailed, practical program for improving the lives of indigenous Papuans.A draft bill containing some of the most interesting policy prescriptions on Papua in years emerged from Manokwari, Papua Barat province last week. The idea of enhanced special autonomy (otonomi khusus plus or otsus plus) emerged from discussions between President Yudhoyono and newly elected Papuan governor Lukas Enembe in April 2013. The president wanted a positive legacy on Papua as he prepared to leave office; the governor wanted a milestone for his first 100 days in office. The result six months later was a draft produced for Enembe by a team in Jayapura that focused almost exclusively on increasing provincial revenue and the governor’s power.  Because any amendments to the 2001 law must cover both Papuan provinces, though, the Papua Barat governor wanted a chance to weigh in. The result, sent back to Enembe last week, is no longer just about more money. It is a plan for protecting and mapping indigenous land, providing incentives to get teachers to remote areas, improving maternal and child healthcare, controlling in-migration from other areas of Indonesia, establishing local political parties and protecting human rights. The problem is that very few people have seen the draft and there has been no public debate. Governor Enembe was hoping to get a draft to Jakarta this month so that the president could fast-track it in the Indonesian parliament before the end of the year. That seems impossible now, but even had it happened, it would have been without any input from civil society. Now there is time for broad consultation across both provinces on a consolidated draft

    Your Affectionate Son, Paul

Artist\u27s narrative: Letter 66 is a heartfelt reminder written by Dunbar to his Mother, Matilda, in order to ease her mind of anxieties about her son being gone to New York for readings. Dunbar explains to his mother that he is optimistic about his time in New York so far and believes that it is only going up from there. He elaborates that the people in the area seem to be very interested in him and his work. He is having great success so far and she should not fear for him. He claims he is doing so well that he may not even be able to tell her when he may show back up due to a lack of time in his busy schedule and the demand for his readings. He then goes to sign the letter with, “I am getting on well so don’t worry. Your affectionate son, Paul.” Implemented are the two ideas of worry and anxiety alongside this idea of prosperity present and they are compared to what they mean to the letter. The imagery represents two main ideas. The peony represents prosperity and the lilac represents worry and anxiety. With this idea in mind, I paid attention to how Dunbar closes the letter. He signs it as “Your affectionate son, Paul.” The word affectionate solidified the rest of this poster for me. It was what continued to influence the type palette, which consists of Abril Display designed by Jośe Scagilon and Veronika Buria, and Henderson Sans designed by Alejandro Paul, as well as the rest of the design choices. This poster was meant to bring the overall idea of affection, whether that be from mother to son or from son to mother.https://ecommons.udayton.edu/stu_vad_dunbarletters/1021/thumbnail.jp

Freaking Out, Fitting In, And Finding My Way: Looking Back on Four Months in China

    Get PDF
This thesis is a collection of essays in which I explore, discuss, and analyze selected aspects of the semester I spent in China through the CSB/SJU study abroad program. It consists of four essays: On the Value of Trains, Through the Layers: Getting Off the Bus and Making it Real, Little Carrot and the Dalai Lama, and From Minnesota to the Middle Kingdom and Back Again: Growing and Changing in China. The idea behind the entire collection is that there is more to China than most Americans get through the very limited media coverage of it. Each essay involves a different aspect of my experience that contributed to giving me a much fuller picture of China than I would have had had I not gone there, not made some of the choices that I did, and not undertaken this project. It is an analysis of some of the attitudes and behaviors I noticed in myself and other Western guests in China. And it is something of an account of my trying to walk the line between loving my experiences in China and abhorring certain policies and attitudes of the government and the people who give the government its authority

Cultured meat from muscle stem cells

Livestock is important for the growth of humans even a thousand years back. Nowadays, the population of people has increased over the years. This scenario may give problems to all people around the world such as the lack of raw material, land, water and also enhance the greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions which will jeopardize the Earth. The idea of cultured meat has been developed in certain countries such as Israel, Netherlands and Australia since 2015 in order to overcome the problems these days and for new generations. Cultured meat or in vitro meat comes with 3 steps: 1. Selection of starter cells 2. Treatment of growth medium and 3. Scaffolding that is well-explained in this report. Cultured meat is the production where we can generate the meat that is edible and full with nutrients as conventional meat has. Besides, the product also generates more benefits for the areas of cost, energy and time consumed, production, health, environment and animals. Aside from many benefits of cultured meat, there are few implications that can affect the environment, economical issues and society regarding the regulation approval of cultured meat. The comparison of nutritional value and protein content in cultured meat and conventional meat can be seen as the conventional meat being naturally beneficial in these areas, however further research could overcome this issue. Therefore, the chance of getting cultured meat into the market is quite risky yet very profitable
