Artificial Immune Systems - Models, algorithms and applications
Copyright © 2010 Academic Research Publishing Agency. This article has been made available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fund.Artificial Immune Systems (AIS) are computational paradigms that belong to the computational intelligence family and are inspired by the biological immune system. During the past decade, they have attracted a lot of interest from researchers aiming to develop immune-based models and techniques to solve complex computational or engineering problems. This work presents a survey of existing AIS models and algorithms with a focus on the last five years. This article is available through the Brunel Open Access Publishing Fun
High-speed detection of emergent market clustering via an unsupervised parallel genetic algorithm
We implement a master-slave parallel genetic algorithm (PGA) with a bespoke
log-likelihood fitness function to identify emergent clusters within price
evolutions. We use graphics processing units (GPUs) to implement a PGA and
visualise the results using disjoint minimal spanning trees (MSTs). We
demonstrate that our GPU PGA, implemented on a commercially available general
purpose GPU, is able to recover stock clusters in sub-second speed, based on a
subset of stocks in the South African market. This represents a pragmatic
choice for low-cost, scalable parallel computing and is significantly faster
than a prototype serial implementation in an optimised C-based
fourth-generation programming language, although the results are not directly
comparable due to compiler differences. Combined with fast online intraday
correlation matrix estimation from high frequency data for cluster
identification, the proposed implementation offers cost-effective,
near-real-time risk assessment for financial practitioners.Comment: 10 pages, 5 figures, 4 tables, More thorough discussion of

RGFGA: An efficient representation and crossover for grouping genetic algorithms
There is substantial research into genetic algorithms that are used to group large numbers of
objects into mutually exclusive subsets based upon some fitness function. However, nearly all
methods involve degeneracy to some degree.
We introduce a new representation for grouping genetic algorithms, the restricted growth function
genetic algorithm, that effectively removes all degeneracy, resulting in a more efficient search. A new crossover operator is also described that exploits a measure of similarity between chromosomes in a population. Using several synthetic datasets, we compare the performance of our representation and crossover with another well known state-of-the-art GA method, a strawman
optimisation method and a well-established statistical clustering algorithm, with encouraging results
Multi-population methods with adaptive mutation for multi-modal optimization problems
open access journalThis paper presents an efficient scheme to locate multiple peaks on multi-modal optimization problems by using genetic algorithms (GAs). The premature convergence problem shows due to the loss of diversity, the multi-population technique can be applied to maintain the diversity in the population and the convergence capacity of GAs. The proposed scheme is the combination of multi-population with adaptive mutation operator, which determines two different mutation probabilities for different sites of the solutions. The probabilities are updated by the fitness and distribution of solutions in the search space during the evolution process. The experimental results demonstrate the performance of the proposed algorithm based on a set of benchmark problems in comparison with relevant algorithms
Adaptive multimodal continuous ant colony optimization
Seeking multiple optima simultaneously, which multimodal optimization aims at, has attracted increasing attention but remains challenging. Taking advantage of ant colony optimization algorithms in preserving high diversity, this paper intends to extend ant colony optimization algorithms to deal with multimodal optimization. First, combined with current niching methods, an adaptive multimodal continuous ant colony optimization algorithm is introduced. In this algorithm, an adaptive parameter adjustment is developed, which takes the difference among niches into consideration. Second, to accelerate convergence, a differential evolution mutation operator is alternatively utilized to build base vectors for ants to construct new solutions. Then, to enhance the exploitation, a local search scheme based on Gaussian distribution is self-adaptively performed around the seeds of niches. Together, the proposed algorithm affords a good balance between exploration and exploitation. Extensive experiments on 20 widely used benchmark multimodal functions are conducted to investigate the influence of each algorithmic component and results are compared with several state-of-the-art multimodal algorithms and winners of competitions on multimodal optimization. These comparisons demonstrate the competitive efficiency and effectiveness of the proposed algorithm, especially in dealing with complex problems with high numbers of local optima
Recombination and Self-Adaptation in Multi-objective Genetic Algorithms
This paper investigates the influence of recombination and self-adaptation in real-encoded Multi-Objective Genetic Algorithms (MOGAs). NSGA-II and SPEA2 are used as example to characterize the efficiency of MOGAs in relation to various recombination operators. The blend crossover, the simulated binary crossover and the breeder genetic crossover are compared for both MOGAs on multi-objective problems of the literature. Finally, a self-adaptive recombination scheme is proposed to improve the robustness of MOGAs
