The Right (Angled) Perspective: Improving the Understanding of Road Scenes Using Boosted Inverse Perspective Mapping
Many tasks performed by autonomous vehicles such as road marking detection,
object tracking, and path planning are simpler in bird's-eye view. Hence,
Inverse Perspective Mapping (IPM) is often applied to remove the perspective
effect from a vehicle's front-facing camera and to remap its images into a 2D
domain, resulting in a top-down view. Unfortunately, however, this leads to
unnatural blurring and stretching of objects at further distance, due to the
resolution of the camera, limiting applicability. In this paper, we present an
adversarial learning approach for generating a significantly improved IPM from
a single camera image in real time. The generated bird's-eye-view images
contain sharper features (e.g. road markings) and a more homogeneous
illumination, while (dynamic) objects are automatically removed from the scene,
thus revealing the underlying road layout in an improved fashion. We
demonstrate our framework using real-world data from the Oxford RobotCar
Dataset and show that scene understanding tasks directly benefit from our

Unsupervised Domain Adaptation on Reading Comprehension
Reading comprehension (RC) has been studied in a variety of datasets with the
boosted performance brought by deep neural networks. However, the
generalization capability of these models across different domains remains
unclear. To alleviate this issue, we are going to investigate unsupervised
domain adaptation on RC, wherein a model is trained on labeled source domain
and to be applied to the target domain with only unlabeled samples. We first
show that even with the powerful BERT contextual representation, the
performance is still unsatisfactory when the model trained on one dataset is
directly applied to another target dataset. To solve this, we provide a novel
conditional adversarial self-training method (CASe). Specifically, our approach
leverages a BERT model fine-tuned on the source dataset along with the
confidence filtering to generate reliable pseudo-labeled samples in the target
domain for self-training. On the other hand, it further reduces domain
distribution discrepancy through conditional adversarial learning across
domains. Extensive experiments show our approach achieves comparable accuracy

CausaLM: Causal Model Explanation Through Counterfactual Language Models
Understanding predictions made by deep neural networks is notoriously
difficult, but also crucial to their dissemination. As all ML-based methods,
they are as good as their training data, and can also capture unwanted biases.
While there are tools that can help understand whether such biases exist, they
do not distinguish between correlation and causation, and might be ill-suited
for text-based models and for reasoning about high level language concepts. A
key problem of estimating the causal effect of a concept of interest on a given
model is that this estimation requires the generation of counterfactual
examples, which is challenging with existing generation technology. To bridge
that gap, we propose CausaLM, a framework for producing causal model
explanations using counterfactual language representation models. Our approach
is based on fine-tuning of deep contextualized embedding models with auxiliary
adversarial tasks derived from the causal graph of the problem. Concretely, we
show that by carefully choosing auxiliary adversarial pre-training tasks,
language representation models such as BERT can effectively learn a
counterfactual representation for a given concept of interest, and be used to
estimate its true causal effect on model performance. A byproduct of our method
is a language representation model that is unaffected by the tested concept,
which can be useful in mitigating unwanted bias ingrained in the data.Comment: Our code and data are available at:

SALSA-TEXT : self attentive latent space based adversarial text generation
Inspired by the success of self attention mechanism and Transformer
architecture in sequence transduction and image generation applications, we
propose novel self attention-based architectures to improve the performance of
adversarial latent code- based schemes in text generation. Adversarial latent
code-based text generation has recently gained a lot of attention due to their
promising results. In this paper, we take a step to fortify the architectures
used in these setups, specifically AAE and ARAE. We benchmark two latent
code-based methods (AAE and ARAE) designed based on adversarial setups. In our
experiments, the Google sentence compression dataset is utilized to compare our
method with these methods using various objective and subjective measures. The
experiments demonstrate the proposed (self) attention-based models outperform
