Roman diet and trade: evidence from organic residues on pottery sherds recovered at the Roman town of Calleva Atrebatum (Silchester Hants.)

The analysis of organic residues from pottery sherds using Gas-Chromatography with mass-spectroscopy (GC-MS) has revealed information about the variety of foods eaten and domestic routine at Silchester between the second and fourth–sixth centuries A.D. Two results are discussed in detail: those of a second-century Gauloise-type amphora and a fourth-century SE Dorset black-burnished ware (BB1) cooking pot, which reveal the use of pine pitch on the inner surface of the amphora and the use of animal fats (ruminant adipose fats) and leafy vegetables in cooking at the Roman town of Silchester, Hants

Methodological problems of the etymology of Gaulish origin in French

It is a well-known fact that the etymology of the French lexicon is mostly Latin. But this apparently obvious consideration hides a signifi cant amount of unsure, if not biased, etymologies. This paper aims fi rst at criticizing the laxity of the etymological method : use of reconstructed vulgar Latin and old Frankish etymons upon unclear principles, huge distortions of meaning, phonetic irregularities, ignorance of the historical context, etc. In a second time, this paper aims at showing that the neglected Gaulish substratum can sometimes afford better explanations to some of these doubtful and impressionistic etymologies, and proposes new etymologies based upon attested Gaulish etymons.It is a well-known fact that the etymology of the French lexicon is mostly Latin. The morphological study of the item, replaced in its typo-chronolgical context of the 2nd c. AD, gives the opportunity to re-examine the dali life accessories using the two languages, with special focus on the occurrences of the Gaulish word "vimpi".Une fibule romaine en forme de semelle de chaussure, trouvée à laon (Aisne), porte une inscription associant latin et gaulois : ave vimpi. New evidence on the Urceus-type wine amphorae of Baetica

Neste trabalho apresentam-se novos dados sobre ânforas de fundo plano de produção bética, a que atribuímos o nome de tipo “urceus”. Trata-se de contentores, com origem no Guadalquivir, afins a produções gálicas, ainda que com cronologias mais precoces, com um auge de difusão no período augustano. A identificação deste tipo de ânforas no naufrágio bético de Sud-Perduto 2 (Cabo Bonifácio), permite uma melhor caracterização formal e reforçar a ideia de que não se destinavam a um comércio meramente regional mas antes a longa distância.In this article we present new data about flat based amphorae of Baetica production, which we called “urceus type”. They are containers from the Guadalquivir, similar to the ones produced in Gallia, even though they are from an early chronology and reached their diffusion height in the Augustan period. The identification of this type of amphorae in the Baetica shipwreck of the Sud-Perduto 2 (Cape Bonifacio) allows a better formal characterization and reinforces the idea that they were not only meant for a regional trade but for a long distance one

Comment enseigner les Gaulois en classe de CE2 de manière ludique, tout en abordant des thèmes riches et parfois difficiles à comprendre ? Nous tentons ici de répondre à cela, en expérimentant les bienfaits du jeu pour apprendre, pour rendre l'enseignement de l'histoire plus original et vivant. Et si le jeu permettait de mieux ancrer les apprentissages ? Ainsi par différentes configurations de groupes, nous tentons de voir quelles sont les organisations qui semblent les mieux adaptées à la collaboration, à la réussite d'une activité. Nous examinons la mixité et l'hétérogénéité pour voir leurs conséquences sur une classe. Version initiale de l'article publié sous le même titre dans Pallas, 76, 2008, p. 295-329.L'examen des données archéologiques et la relecture des sources littéraires antiques permettent de proposer un schéma d'évolution de l'organisation politique et territoriale des Tolosates aux IIe et Ier siècles av. J.-C. Jusqu'en 106, la capitale des Tectosages, située dans le quartier Saint-Roch au sud de Toulouse, est à la fois un centre politico-religieux, un port fluvial et une agglomération marchande. Vieille-Toulouse appartient alors à un réseau de bourgades dépendant de ce centre. La répression de la révolte de 108-106 entraîne le démantèlement de l'organisation fédérale des Tectosages et par conséquent le déclin du site de Saint-Roch, qui sera abandonné vers 70. Vieille-Toulouse prend alors la relève. La fidélité de Tolosa pendant la guerre des Gaules lui vaut l'octroi du droit latin, qui s'accompagne de profondes transformations de l'urbanisme de Vieille-Toulouse à partir du milieu du siècle
