    Intelligent Mobility in Smart Cities

    Smart Cities seek to optimize their systems by increasing integration through approaches such as increased interoperability, seamless system integration, and automation. Thus, they have the potential to deliver substantial efficiency gains and eliminate redundancy. To add to the complexity of the problem, the integration of systems for efficiency gains may compromise the resilience of an urban system. This all needs to be taken into consideration when thinking about Smart Cities. The transportation field must also apply the principles and concepts mentioned above. This cannot be understood without considering its links and effects on the other components of an urban system. New technologies allow for new means of travel to be built, and new business models allow for existing ones to be utilized. This Special Issue puts together papers with different focuses, but all of them tackle the topic of smart mobility

    This volume holds the papers from the 18th annual GIS Research UK (GISRUK). This year the conference, hosted at University College London (UCL), from Wednesday 14 to Friday 16 April 2010. The conference covered the areas of core geographic information science research as well as applications domains such as crime and health and technological developments in LBS and the geoweb. UCL’s research mission as a global university is based around a series of Grand Challenges that affect us all, and these were accommodated in GISRUK 2010. The overarching theme this year was “Global Challenges”, with specific focus on the following themes: * Crime and Place * Environmental Change * Intelligent Transport * Public Health and Epidemiology * Simulation and Modelling * London as a global city * The geoweb and neo-geography * Open GIS and Volunteered Geographic Information * Human-Computer Interaction and GIS Traditionally, GISRUK has provided a platform for early career researchers as well as those with a significant track record of achievement in the area. As such, the conference provides a welcome blend of innovative thinking and mature reflection. GISRUK is the premier academic GIS conference in the UK and we are keen to maintain its outstanding record of achievement in developing GIS in the UK and beyond

    Urban Form and Greenhouse Gas Emissions

    The research reported in this dissertation contains three complementary and overlapping parts: One, “findings”: It assesses the factors of urban morphology that contribute to increased rates of greenhouse gas emissions per capita, and the ways they interact. It finds a significant but underrepresented set of factors, distinct from but relating the factors at the individual building scale and the scale of regional transportation systems. Two, “strategies”: It assesses the methodologies by which such findings might be put to use in identifying and achieving reductions through changes in urban design, and proposes new strategies to do so using innovative forms of design decision support tools. Three, “design decision support tools”: It then proposes a specific new technology, namely a new class of open-source scenario-modelling tool, embodied in new prototype software. The tool utilizes a new kind of “federated” web-based wiki technology incorporating design pattern languages, which was developed in collaboration with the software engineer and wiki inventor Ward Cunningham. As part of this research, it has been necessary to examine fundamental methodological questions, and to account for limitations of current data as well as current significant gaps in research. In the process, this research has made a modest contribution to the state of knowledge about additional research needed. For me, this work has also highlighted the need for urgent and effective reforms to current “business as usual” practices. The need is all the more urgent given unprecedented rates of urbanisation – much of it sprawling and resource-inefficient – taking place in many parts of the world today

    An evolutionary AI-based decision support system for urban regeneration planning

    The renewal of derelict inner-city urban districts suffering from high levels of socio-economic deprivation and sustainability problems is one of the key research areas in urban planning and regeneration. Subject to a wide range of social, economical and environmental factors, decision support for an optimal allocation of residential and service lots within such districts is regarded as a complex task. Pre-assessment of various neighbourhood factors before the commencement of actual location allocation of various public services is considered paramount to the sutainable outcome of regeneration projects. Spatial assessment in such derelict built-up areas requires planning of lot assignment for residential buildings in a way to maximize accessibility to public services while minimizing the deprivation of built neighbourhood areas. However, the prediction of socio-economic deprivation impact on the regeneration districts in order to optimize the location-allocation of public service infrastructure is a complex task. This is generally due to the highly conflicting nature of various service structures with various socio-economic and environmental factors. In regards to the problem given above, this thesis presents the development of an evolutionary AI-based decision support systemto assist planners with the assessment and optimization of regeneration districts. The work develops an Adaptive Network Based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) based module to assess neighbourhood districts for various deprivation factors. Additionally an evolutionary genetic algorithms based solution is implemented to optimize various urban regeneration layouts based upon the prior deprivation assessment model. The two-tiered framework initially assesses socio-cultural deprivation levels of employment, health, crime and transport accessibility in neighbourhood areas and produces a deprivation impact matrix overthe regeneration layout lots based upon a trained, network-based fuzzy inference system. Based upon this impact matrix a genetic algorithm is developed to optimize the placement of various public services (shopping malls, primary schools, GPs and post offices) in a way that maximize the accessibility of all services to regenerated residential units as well as contribute to minimize the measure of deprivation of surrounding neighbourhood areas. The outcome of this research is evaluated over two real-world case studies presenting highly coherent results.
