Easy on that trigger dad: a study of long term family photo retrieval
We examine the effects of new technologies for digital photography on people's longer term storage and access to collections of personal photos. We report an empirical study of parents' ability to retrieve photos related to salient family events from more than a year ago. Performance was relatively poor with people failing to find almost 40% of pictures. We analyze participants' organizational and access strategies to identify reasons for this poor performance. Possible reasons for retrieval failure include: storing too many pictures, rudimentary organization, use of multiple storage systems, failure to maintain collections and participants' false beliefs about their ability to access photos. We conclude by exploring the technical and theoretical implications of these findings

Depth Fields: Extending Light Field Techniques to Time-of-Flight Imaging
A variety of techniques such as light field, structured illumination, and
time-of-flight (TOF) are commonly used for depth acquisition in consumer
imaging, robotics and many other applications. Unfortunately, each technique
suffers from its individual limitations preventing robust depth sensing. In
this paper, we explore the strengths and weaknesses of combining light field
and time-of-flight imaging, particularly the feasibility of an on-chip
implementation as a single hybrid depth sensor. We refer to this combination as
depth field imaging. Depth fields combine light field advantages such as
synthetic aperture refocusing with TOF imaging advantages such as high depth
resolution and coded signal processing to resolve multipath interference. We
show applications including synthesizing virtual apertures for TOF imaging,
improved depth mapping through partial and scattering occluders, and single
frequency TOF phase unwrapping. Utilizing space, angle, and temporal coding,
depth fields can improve depth sensing in the wild and generate new insights

Sharing, privacy and trust issues for photo collections
Digital libraries are quickly being adopted by the masses. Technological developments now allow community groups, clubs, and even ordinary individuals to create their own, publicly accessible collections. However, users may not be fully aware of the potential privacy implications of submitting their documents to a digital library, and may hold misconceptions of the technological support for preserving their privacy.
We present results from 18 autoethnographic investigations and 19 observations / interviews into privacy issues that arise when people make their personal photo collections available online. The Adams' privacy model is used to discuss the findings according to information receiver, information sensitivity, and information usage. Further issues of trust and ad hoc poorly supported protection strategies are presented. Ultimately while photographic data is potentially highly sensitive, the privacy risks are often hidden and the protection mechanisms are limited
Prime, Perform, Recover
This thesis examines the formal and conceptual framework of my artistic practice as it culminated in the installation of my thesis exhibition, Prime, Perform, Recover. My exhibition seeks to operate as an analysis and critique of the separation inherent in media presentation and rhetoric surrounding natural disasters.
I utilize the aesthetics and vocabulary of disaster capitalism and prepping culture in order to pose direct questions about ecological and social change. I examine the role of images within mass media image production as an all encompassing Now-Time. In this paper I describe frameworks that my practice proposes as potential solutions to these problems, and I position my research in the context of artists and artworks that have influenced me and operate within similar channels as my own
Keyframe detection in visual lifelogs
The SenseCam is a wearable camera that passively captures images. Therefore, it requires no conscious eļ¬ort by a user in taking a photo. A Visual Diary from such a source could prove to be a valuable tool in assisting the elderly, individuals with neurodegenerative diseases, or other traumas. One issue with Visual Lifelogs is the large volume of image data generated. In previous work we spit a day's worth of images into more manageable segments, i.e. into distinct events or activities. However, each event coud stil consist of 80-100 images. thus, in this paper we propose a novel approach to selecting the key images within an event using a combination of MPEG-7 and Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) features
