The Holly Bough service is a unique pre-Christmas event, combining musical excellence and theological depth, crafted by the founding dean of Liverpool Cathedral in the early twentieth century for the Fourth Sunday of Advent. Located within the developing science of cathedral studies, this paper analyses the demographic profile, motivational intention (drawing on religious orientation theory) and perceived impact on spiritual wellbeing (drawing on Fisher’s four dimensional model) among 564 participants who completed a detailed survey at the service held in 2019. The data demonstrated a mix of ages, a sense of Anglican commitment to this form of event-belonging by those who return year-on-year and invite friends to join them, and a perceived beneficial impact on all four dimensions of spiritual wellbeing

Family (Feud) Faith: Raising Children in an Interfaith Marriage

For one year, when I was in fourth or fifth grade, I was attending a Jewish religious school during the school year and a Christian Sunday School during the summer. I don’t remember much about Sunday school, except for one unsettling lesson. The teacher told us, “You must spread the word of Jesus; because of him you aren’t going to hell.” Well, talk about confusing an elementary school kid! I had heard the word “Jesus” only when adults uttered a frustrated, “Oh Jesus!” Leah Katz is currently a freshman and took GWRIT 103 last semester. She writes, I am a music major with a concentration in instrumental music education (my main instrument is the viola). While music consumes most of my life, I do have other interests such as art history and religion. Writing “Family (Feud) Faith: Raising Children in an Interfaith Marriage” was an extremely opening experience for me. Through my professor’s genuine interest and encouragement, I analyzed my family situation and realize how my religious choice has been and will forever be a test of faith. This paper is dedicated to my parents and I hope that someday I can find the courage to let them read their daughter’s thoughts on interfaith marriage

Praying the Advent season: Putting the coming of Christ into Christmas life

It is now nearly a decade since a revision of the Roman Missal was predicted and now five and a half years since the Missal appeared in Latin. The process of translating the 1377 pages is an immense project. After all the turmoil within ICEL\u27s structures, the work is going ahead. With Advent, the focus of new translations is in expressing fully the biblical references to the future Messiah in the orations. In the Roman Missal3, a new policy is set making the tri-fold form of Solemn Blessing a unique fixture of Advent. As Pope Benedict is asking, the sense of mission and not just dismissal is a challenge to live the spirit of the Advent season. This article challenges readers to enter into the spirit of the shortest liturgical season at the time of the greatest commercial distractions of Christmas sales and to ensure that the prayers are articulated with the confidence of the season. The Sign of Jonah

We have available today the immediate revelation and leadership of the Holy Spirit. It is this leadership rather than conscience that we as Friends are obligated to follow. Conscience may be a poor standard as it operates in accord with our own subjective beliefs and may be wrong. Our problem is to try the spirits to be sure the spirit we are following is truly the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit is of God and cannot be wrong. The Bible is our ultimate test because the leadership of the Holy Spirit must be in accord with God\u27s Written Word. The Bible, as originally inspired and written, is absolute in its veracity and authority.https://digitalcommons.georgefox.edu/quakerbooks/1071/thumbnail.jp
