    Optimizing MDS Codes for Caching at the Edge

    In this paper we investigate the problem of optimal MDS-encoded cache placement at the wireless edge to minimize the backhaul rate in heterogeneous networks. We derive the backhaul rate performance of any caching scheme based on file splitting and MDS encoding and we formulate the optimal caching scheme as a convex optimization problem. We then thoroughly investigate the performance of this optimal scheme for an important heterogeneous network scenario. We compare it to several other caching strategies and we analyze the influence of the system parameters, such as the popularity and size of the library files and the capabilities of the small-cell base stations, on the overall performance of our optimal caching strategy. Our results show that the careful placement of MDS-encoded content in caches at the wireless edge leads to a significant decrease of the load of the network backhaul and hence to a considerable performance enhancement of the network.Comment: to appear in Globecom 201

    Coding for Fast Content Download

    We study the fundamental trade-off between storage and content download time. We show that the download time can be significantly reduced by dividing the content into chunks, encoding it to add redundancy and then distributing it across multiple disks. We determine the download time for two content access models - the fountain and fork-join models that involve simultaneous content access, and individual access from enqueued user requests respectively. For the fountain model we explicitly characterize the download time, while in the fork-join model we derive the upper and lower bounds. Our results show that coding reduces download time, through the diversity of distributing the data across more disks, even for the total storage used.Comment: 8 pages, 6 figures, conferenc

    Transmission of Mobile Multimedia Services in DVB-SH Networks

    [ES] La presente Tesina estudia la transmisión de contenidos y servicios multimedia a través de redes de difusión basadas en el sistema DVB-SH (Digital Video Broadcasting ¿ Satellite Services to Handheld Devices), el cual permitirá conseguir una cobertura nacional en toda Europa de servicios de TV móvil y cuya puesta en funcionamiento está prevista para el 2008. DVB-SH es una evolución tecnológica del estándar europeo de TDT móvil DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handhelds). Sus principales características son una arquitectura híbrida terrestre-satelital y la transmisión en banda S en torno a los 2 GHz. la cual está disponible en Europa para este tipo de servicios. Además, debido a las peculiaridades de la recepción vía satélite, DVB-SH incorpora nuevos mecanismos de protección entre los que destacan un entrelazador de larga duración de nivel físico y un nuevo esquema de codificación de nivel de enlace. Debido a que en la actualidad el sistema DVB-SH todavía se encuentra en una fase muy temprana de validación, el trabajo realizado en esta tesina está encaminado a evaluar los nuevos mecanismos de nivel de enlace DVB-SH a partir de trazas de errores DVB-H. Se analizará la calidad de usuario para diferentes mecanismos de protección y finalmente se identificarán aquellos esquemas y configuraciones más adecuados para las situaciones de recepción más importantes[EN] This Master's thesis studies the transmission of multimedia digital contents in broadcasting networks based in the DVB-SH (Digital Video Broadcasting ¿ Satellite Services to Handheld Devices) standard. This standard will make possible a network capable of providing mobile TV services in all Europe, which is due at 2008. DVB-SH is the technological evolution of the European mobile DTT standard DVB-H (Digital Video Broadcasting - Handhelds). Its main characteristics are a hybrid terrestrial ¿ satellite architecture and the transmission at 2 GHz in the S-band, which is at disposal in Europe for this kind of services. Because of the peculiarities of satellite reception, DVB-SH incorporates new protection mechanisms. Among these mechanisms, a long duration interleaver and a new link layer codification scheme stand out. However, DVB-SH technology is still in an early phase of validation. Because of this, the work fulfilled in this Master's thesis is aimed at evaluating these codification schemes by means of DVB-H error traces.     COST EFFICIENT PROVISIONING OF MASS MOBILE MULTIMEDIA SERVICES IN HYBRID CELLULAR AND BROADCASTING SYSTEMS

    Uno de los retos a los que se enfrenta la industria de las comunicaciones móviles e inalámbricas es proporcionar servicios multimedia masivos a bajo coste, haciéndolos asequibles para los usuarios y rentables a los operadores. El servicio más representativo es el de TV móvil, el cual se espera que sea una aplicación clave en las futuras redes móviles. Actualmente las redes celulares no pueden soportar un consumo a gran escala de este tipo de servicios, y las nuevas redes de radiodifusión móvil son muy costosas de desplegar debido a la gran inversión en infraestructura de red necesaria para proporcionar niveles aceptables de cobertura. Esta tesis doctoral aborda el problema de la provisión eficiente de servicios multimedia masivos a dispositivos móviles y portables utilizando la infraestructura de radiodifusión y celular existente. La tesis contempla las tecnologías comerciales de última generación para la radiodifusión móvil (DVB-H) y para las redes celulares (redes 3G+ con HSDPA y MBMS), aunque se centra principalmente en DVB-H. El principal paradigma propuesto para proporcionar servicios multimedia masivos a bajo coste es evitar el despliegue de una red DVB-H con alta capacidad y cobertura desde el inicio. En su lugar se propone realizar un despliegue progresivo de la infraestructura DVB-H siguiendo la demanda de los usuarios. Bajo este contexto, la red celular es fundamental para evitar sobre-dimensionar la red DVB-H en capacidad y también en áreas con una baja densidad de usuarios hasta que el despliegue de un transmisor o un repetidor DVB-H sea necesario. Como principal solución tecnológica la tesis propone realizar una codificación multi-burst en DVB-H utilizando códigos Raptor. El objetivo es explotar la diversidad temporal del canal móvil para aumentar la robustez de la señal y, por tanto, el nivel de cobertura, a costa de incrementar la latencia de la red.Gómez Barquero, D.     Link-Layer Coding for GNSS Navigation Messages

    In this paper, we face the problem of ensuring reliability of Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSSs) in harsh channel conditions, where obstacles and scatter cause long outage events that cannot be counteracted with channel coding only. Our novel approach, stemming from information-theoretic considerations, is based on link-layer coding (LLC). LLC allows us to significantly improve the efficiency in terms of time-to-first-fix with respect to current operational GNSSs, which adopt carousel transmission. First, we investigate the maximum theoretical LLC gain under different Land Mobile Satellite channel conditions. Then, some practical LLC coding schemes, namely, fountain codes and a novel low-density parity-check plus low-rate repetition coding, are proposed and tested in realistic single-satellite and multi-satellite Land Mobile Satellite scenarios, considering the Galileo I/NAV message as study case. Simulation results show that our designed schemes largely improve on carousel transmission and achieve near-optimal performance with limited increase in complexity.     A Survey on Applications of Cache-Aided NOMA

    Contrary to orthogonal multiple-access (OMA), non-orthogonal multiple-access (NOMA) schemes can serve a pool of users without exploiting the scarce frequency or time domain resources. This is useful in meeting the future network requirements (5G and beyond systems), such as, low latency, massive connectivity, users' fairness, and high spectral efficiency. On the other hand, content caching restricts duplicate data transmission by storing popular contents in advance at the network edge which reduces data traffic. In this survey, we focus on cache-aided NOMA-based wireless networks which can reap the benefits of both cache and NOMA; switching to NOMA from OMA enables cache-aided networks to push additional files to content servers in parallel and improve the cache hit probability. Beginning with fundamentals of the cache-aided NOMA technology, we summarize the performance goals of cache-aided NOMA systems, present the associated design challenges, and categorize the recent related literature based on their application verticals. Concomitant standardization activities and open research challenges are highlighted as well

    Layer-Aware Forward Error Correction for Mobile Broadcast of Layered Media

    The bitstream structure of layered media formats such as scalable video coding (SVC) or multiview video coding (MVC) opens up new opportunities for their distribution in Mobile TV services. Features like graceful degradation or the support of the 3-D experience in a backwards-compatible way are enabled. The reason is that parts of the media stream are more important than others with each part itself providing a useful media representation. Typically, the decoding of some parts of the bitstream is only possible, if the corresponding more important parts are correctly received. Hence, unequal error protection (UEP) can be applied protecting important parts of the bitstream more strongly than others. Mobile broadcast systems typically apply forward error correction (FEC) on upper layers to cope with transmission errors, which the physical layer FEC cannot correct. Today's FEC solutions are optimized to transmit single layer video. The exploitation of the dependencies in layered media codecs for UEP using FEC is the subject of this paper. The presented scheme, which is called layer-aware FEC (LA-FEC), incorporates the dependencies of the layered video codec into the FEC code construction. A combinatorial analysis is derived to show the potential theoretical gain in terms of FEC decoding probability and video quality. Furthermore, the implementation of LA-FEC as an extension of the Raptor FEC and the related signaling are described.
